  • Introduction of Pinnacle Education / InnnovatED as service provider.MM history & backgroundAZ charter schoolsMigration to online learningAZ Distance Ed designationCreation of InnovatED and Pinnacle International High SchoolFocus on Pinnacle / InnovatED experience with our own studentsDemographics of our sitesReading, credit and GPA levels of our studentsWe run schools every day, serving the populations of at-risk and credit recoveryAll practices and support methods are based on practical daily experience needed to support online learning
  • What are the current trends in Online Learning on the national level? How are online learners performing compared to their peers?
  • Review of national survey data.
  • Student performance rankings:1. Blended2. Fully online3. Face-to-faceNot a “knock” on teachers, but a statement that with better tools (technology) teachers get better results.Highlight Central AZ College experience…Former dropouts from the Casa Grande site, who were given academic scholarships to CAC, have higher retention rates and GPA’s than those from any other high school that CAC serves.Reason – Students say that working online taught them to be self-sufficient, responsible for their own pace and progress, and made them more independent.
  • Definition of “credit recovery”…
  • Emphasis on “credit recovery” is prominent in the SENIOR year due to graduation.Problems actually start in the FRESHMAN year.Failing 2 classes in the FRESHMAN year makes it almost impossible for students to graduate with the cohort group without credit recovery.Need is especially profound in small and rural schools with limited options:Patagonia AZ Example – 112 students in high school4 FTE teachers, 1 per subject areaFailing even 1 course puts a student “off cycle” for graduation, due to lack of make-up opportunities.
  • Data examples
  • More data trends…
  • Trends in Urban centers may be more pronounced than suburban and rural settings.General trends from national data say the following, per 1,000 students:30% fail one or more classes in a single year4% will receive homebound services6.5% will become pregnant per year10% will require other flexibility for special courses or scheduling conflictsAggregate need for at least 505 credit recovery classes per 1,000 students at a minimum.
  • Schools need to adapt their Support Models for online learning based on learner needs and local connectivity issues.Don’t confuse the delivery model with the support model. The lower the performance level of the learner, the more restrictive and supportive the environment needs to be.Course delivery optionsFull Course Completion – 1st time take of each courseDiagnostic / Prescriptive – for students who have taken the course previously and failed
  • Don’t confuse the delivery of content with supporting student needs.
