Rationale • Swindon and the Swindon and Wiltshire LEP need to grow economically • The engine for that growth is in the SME community • Swindon – 80% of businesses are SMEs • Private sector driven economy • Sustaining the economic base strengthens the social fabric £1 spent locally derives 63p additional benefit
  • 3. Two Elements Local Procurement • Harmonise public sector procurement standards • Address the barriers to SMEs bidding for public sector contracts Supply Chain Management • Develop supply chain management processes for large scale capital projects in the area Develop a deeper understanding of the potential of local suppliers amongst local procurers £50k pilot

Progress to date • Business West working with SBC to co-ordinate the trial – started April 2014 • Involving procurement leads for GWH, SBC, Police, Fire and Rescue Service and Probation Service – all keen! • Areas of focus: – Sharing documentation, processes and contract timescales – Common PQQ? – Suggested trial areas; estates management and recruitment of temporary staff
  • 6. Next Steps • By June, scope the trial project and implement • Manage communication to update business community through Influence, FSB and Chamber • Work with SWLEP on potential roll out within the whole LEP area • Develop part 2 – managing the supply chain, linking to major construction projects such as Wichelstowe (and all housing developments), Lyneham, North Star, Museum and Art Gallery
