  • 1. ONE OF THE MAJOR PROBLEMS FACED BY THE INDIAN URBAN CITIES IS THE PROBLEM OF TRAFFIC CONGESTION. A BIG CONCERN IS HOW TO SPEED UP THE TRAFFIC:PUTTING MORE BUSES ON THE ROAD WILL JAM THE ROADS EVEN WORSE AND DETERIORATE THE AIR:BUILDING MORE SUBWAY IS COSTLY AND TIME CONSUMING. SO THERE IS A NEED TO DEVICE A SYSTEM COMPATIBLE WITH EXISTING INFRASTRUCTRE TO REDUCE CONGESTION. WITH THE INCREASING POPULATION OF URBAN CITIES AND GROWING DEFICIT BETWEEN THE ROAD NETWORKS AND NUMBER OF VEHICLES THUS LEADING TO POLLUTION AND WASTE OF RESOURCES, THERE IS A DEMAND FOR EFFICIENT PUBLIC TRANSPORT SYSTEM URBAN POPULATION : 377 MILLION(2011 CENSUS) IN DELHI 13 PEOPLE DIE EVERY DAY ON ROAD IN BANGALORE THE AVERAGE TIME TAKEN BY AN IT PROFFESSIONAL TO REACH WORK IS 2.5 Hrs NUMBER OF VEHICLES ON MUMBAI ROADS MULTIPLIED 33 TIMES IN 50 YERARS WHILE THE ROAD NETWORK LENGTH ONLY DOUBLED
  • 2. PROPOSED SOLUTION THE PROPOSED SOLUTION TO THE PROBLEM OF TRAFFIC CONGESTION IS INSTALLNG THE STRADDLING BUSES ON ROADS. THE MODEL LOOKS LIKE A SUBWAY OR LIGHT-RAIL TRAIN BESTRIDING THE ROAD THE BUS CAN REDUCE THE TRAFFIC JAMS BY 20-30% 4-4.5M HIGH WITH TWO LEVELS: PASSENGER BOAT ON THE UPPER LEVEL AND 6 M IN WIDTH WHILE OTHER VEHICLES LOWER THAN 2M CAN GO POWERED BY ELECTRICITY AND SOLAR ENERGY. REDUCE THE TRAFFIC JAMS BY 20-30%. AVERAGE SPEED IS 40- 50Km/Hr CARRYING 1200- 1400 PASSENGERS AT A TIME WITHOUT BLOCKING OTHER VEHICLE’S WAY COST IS ABOUT 5.36BILLION RUPEES TO BUILD THE BUS AND A 40 KM LONG PATH FOR IT, APRROXIMATELY 7% OF METRO SYSTEM. LARGE WINDOWS ARE PROVIDED ON THE BOTH LOWER SIDES SO THAT THE ILLUSION OF CAR MOVING BACK, IS NOT CREATED
  • 3. MERITS OVER EXISTING PUBLIC TRANSPORT SYSTEMS THERE ARE 3 TYPES OF PUBLIC TRANSPORT SYSTEMS: METRO,BRTS AND NORMAL BUS. DISADVANTAGES OF PRESENT TRANSIT SYSTEMS METRO COSTS A LOT AND TAKES LONG TIME TO BUILD. BRTS TAKES UP ROAD SPACES AND PRODUCES NOISE AND POLLUTION.THUS PRODUCING MORE CONGESTION ON ROADS FOR OTHER VEHICLES. NORMAL BUS SYSTEM IS NOT SOPHISTICATED AND THE BUSES ARE CONGESTED AND A LOT OF TIME IS WASTED TRAVELLING WITH THESE BUSES. MERITS OF STRADDLING BUS SYSTEM IT IS CHEAPER AND CONSTRUCTION TAKES LESS TIME LARGE PARKING SPACES ARE REQUIRED LARGE PARKING SPACES ARE NO REQUIRED AND CAN BE PARKED ON ROADS WITHOUT AFFECTING THE PASSAGE OF CARS IT SAVES ROAD SPACES, EFFICIENT AND HIGH IN CAPACITY TRAVELLING WITH THESE BUSES WILL CONSUME LESS TIME AND HENCE IT IS MORE SOPHISTICATED

KEY STEPS INVOLVED IN IMPLEMENTING THE SOLUTION REMODELLING OF THE ROAD THERE ARE TWO WAYS OF REMODELLING THE ROADS: LAYING RAILS & PAINT WHITE LINES THE RAILS WILL BE LAID ON BOTH SIDES OF THE ROAD AND THE BUS CAN RUN ON THE RAILS AND SAVE 30% ENERGY. THE OTHER METHOD IS BY PAINTING WHITE LINES ON BOTH SIDES OF THE ROAD AND BUSES WILL HAVE AUTO PILOTS WHCH WILL FOLLOW THESE LINES AND RUN STABLE WHILE MOVING.

BUILDING STATIONS: THERE ARE TWO WAYS IN DEALING WITH STATION PLATFORMS: 1.LOAD/UNLOAD THROUGH THE SIDES 2.USING THE BUILT-IN-LADDER SO THAT PASSENGERS CAN GO UP AND OVER PASS THROUGH THE CEILING DOORS. 3.STATIONS CAN BE SET UP AT EVERY 2Km. POWER SUPPLY TO BUSES 1.BUSES WILL BE COMPLETELY POWERED BY MUNICIPAL ELECTRICITY AND SOLAR ENERGY SYSTEM. 2.THE SYSTEM IS RELAY DIRECT CURRENT ELECTRIFICATION. 3.TWO RAILS BUILT ON TOP TO ALLOW THE CHARGING POST TO RUN ALONG WITH THE BUS, THE NEXT CHARGING POST WILL BE ON THE RAILS BEFORE THE EARLIER ONE LEAVES.ELECTRICAL SET HERE IS SUPER CAPACITOR, WHICH CAN CHARGE, DISCHARGE AND STORE ELECTRICITY QUICKLY. 4.THE POWER IT STORES DURING THE STOP CAN SUPPORT THE BUS TILL THE NEXT STOP WHERE ANOTHER ROUND OF CHARGING TAKES PLACE, ACHIEVING ZERO TOXIC GAS

ENSURING SAFETY USING LASER RAY TO SCAN, CARS GET TOO CLOSE TO THE PASSAGE WILL ACTIVATE THE ALARM ON THE BUS AND INSIDE THE BUS THERE ARE TURNING LIGHTS THAT INDICATE THE BUS IS INTENDING TO MAKE A TURN TO WARN THE CARS INSIDE. RADAR SCANNING SYSTEM IS EMBEDED ON THE WALLS TO WARN CARS FROM GETTING TOO CLOSE TO THE BUS WHEELS. ULTRASONIC WAVES WILL BE PUT FORTH FROM THE END OF BUS THAT IS TO KEEP THOSE HIGH CARS OR TRUCKS AWAY FROM ENTERING THE TUNNEL. • WHEN A BUS REACHES A CROSSING RED LIGHT ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE FORK WILL TURN ON AUTOMATICALLLY TO GIVE BUSES THE RIGHT OF THE WAY. • THE CAR CAN MAKE THE TURN WITH THE BUS IF THAT IS THE DIRECTION IT WANTS TO GO TOO;IF NOT • THE RED LIGHT WILL BE ON TO STOP THE CAR BENEATH WHILE THE BUS TAKES THE TURN. IN CASE OF AN ACCIDENT , FIRE OR OTHER EMERGENCIES THE ESCAPING DOORS WILL OPEN AUTOMATICALLY LIKE THE PLANES ARE EQUIPPED WITH INFLATED LADDER SO PEOPLE CAN SLIDE DOWN. EMERGENCY BRAKES ARE PROVIDED IN CAS OF URGENT STOPPAGE.
  • 7. SOURCE OF FUNDING THE ESTIMATED COST IS ABOUT 5.36BILLION RUPEES TO BUILD THE STRADDLING BUS AND A 40 KM LONG PATH FOR IT, WHICH IS APRROXIMATELY 7% OF METRO SYSTEM.. INITIAL COST OF A PHASE CAN BE CALCULATED. THE TOTAL EXPENDITURE FOR THAT PHASE CAN BE DIVIDED AMONG CENTRAL GOVERNMENT, STATE GOVERNMENT,SOFT LOAN AND PRIVATE PUBLIC PARTNERSHIP. A JOINT VENTURE CAN BE SET UP BY THE STATE GOVERNMENT AND CENTRAL GOVERNMENT. SOME PART OF INVESTMENT FOR Ex. 30% CAN BE PROVIDED BY CENTRAL GOVERNMENT, 30% BY STATE GOVERNMENT AND REST CAN BE RAISED BY PUBLIC PRIVATE PARTNERSHIP OR SOFT LOANS. THE REVENUE EARNED WILL BE USED FIRSTLY FOR MAINTENANCE SO THAT THE PROJECT CAN RUN SUCCESSFULLY AND THE MONEY LEFT AFTER THIS CAN BE USED TO PAY THE DEBT.

IMPACT OF THE SOLUTION -MEASURING THE CONGESTION ON THE ROADS COVERED. -MEASUREMENT OF TRAVEL TIME BETWEEN TWO POINTS. -ANALYSING PEOPLES RESPONSE TO THE SYSTEM -ESTIMATING THE COST OF TRAVEL -MEASURING THE REDUCTION IN CARBON EMISSIONS OF THE CITY -BUSES CAN CARRY 1200-1400 PASSENGERS AT A TIME. -ECOFRIENDLY TRANSIT SYSTEM AND SAVES 860TON OF FUEL EVERY YEAR REDUCES 2640TON CARBON EMISSION. -IT CAN PRODUCE MORE OUTPUT FROM THE GIVEN RESOURCES -IT DOSEN’T REQUIRE EXTRA SPACE FOR ITS DEVELOPMENT AND RUNNING,LIKE OTHER PUBLIC TRANSPORT SYSYTEM THIS PROJECT IS SUSTAINABLE BECAUSE IT IS COMPATIBLE WITH THE DECLINING RESOURCES BY DERIVING ITS ENERGY FROM RENEWABLE SOURCES OF ENERGY, THUS IT CAN ACT AS A GOOD TRANSPORT SYSTEM IN A WORLD WHICH IS SUFFERING FROM ENERGY CRISIS. ALSO IT PROVIDES A LOW COST SOPHISTICATED AND COMFORTABLE TRAVEL. IN INDIA,MANY URBAN CITIES ARE BEING PLANNED WITH METRO’S ANND BULLET TRAINS WHICH COSTS A LOT.
