  • What is a Next Generation Network? According to the ITU the definition of an NGN is: A Next Generation Network (NGN) is a packet based network able to provide services making use of multiple broadband, QoS-enabled transport technologies

  • NGNs in the UK - History
    • 1999 Thus launch NGN with 190 POPs and 10,000km of fibre.
    • 2005 Opal / Carphone Warehouse launch NGN
    • 2005 NTL launches a 266-node NGN network with 30 core nodes around the U.K.
    • 2006 C&W launch their NGN in London.
    • 2006 BT switch on their NGN (21CN) in Wales.
    • 2008 Colt deploy their NGN in London, Paris and Frankfurt.
    To date, it’s all been about Network Cost Savings
  • NGNs in the UK
    • Many Network Providers are investing in NGNs.
    • So why choose to go with BT’s 21CN?
    • Scale :
    • BT is investing £10bn in 21CN whilst the others are investing £0.1bn – £0.4bn each on focussed roll-outs.
    • Coverage in 2009 and 2010 :
    • Whilst some others can achieve 60 – 75%, the BT solution achieves 97% of businesses by 2010.
