  • Margaret Mills Senior Principal Database Administrator with Oracle Corporation EBS/Fusion Environment Operations division. Main workload includes installation, configuration, reviewing, debugging, performance analysis and assisting in operational issues related to internal EBS and Fusion development and testing environments. Work closely with Server Operations and Fusion/EBS Performance Specialist teams to identify and resolve outstanding issues. 13 years in the IT industry within support and/or consulting roles. 4 years at Oracle Corporation.
  • Colleague quoted to me the other day “Real DBA’s/Techies don’t need EM, we use real collection scripts and produce our own reports”. Response: 100% agree, but why not use EM to collect data from your “Mickey Mouse” scripts? Does management understand what you are trying to tell them when you send them SQL output to show blocking and waiting sessions? If you send them a nice graph that shows the blocking and waiting session counts over a period (day/week), they tend to read the reports and understand if there is or isn’t an issue. General acceptance levels for EM reporting: Manually run Custom Reports -> Select input System/Group (Most Operations Staff and DBA’s) Dashboards and drill down reports (All Operations Staff and some Managers) Email reports (Managers) Set UDM’s and EM reports up generically and use them across multiple Servers/Groups. No need for rewrites or manual intervention.
  • Demonstration data is for information and demonstration purposes only and has no reflection on real products currently released or to be released in the future. Information relating to internal tier structure and architecture, including Oracle products used in this presentation is purely to demonstrate examples of how Oracle Tools can be enhanced with minimal development. It does not reflect any current or future product or packaging information for real products currently released or to be released in the future .
  • Presentation will focus on demonstration of customizations within Oracle Enterprise Manager 10G. Will also show a quick look at Oracle Enterprise Manager 11G and REUI.
  • Goal of Phase 1 – Tools to utilize proactive monitoring and reporting. Focus on Servers and Databases. Goal of Phase 2 – Add additional monitoring and reporting for Mid Tiers and additional information on Real User experiences and responses.
  • Goal of Phase 1 – Tools to utilize proactive monitoring and reporting. Focus on Servers and Databases. Goal of Phase 2 – Add additional monitoring and reporting for Mid Tiers and additional information on Real User experiences and responses.
  • Oracle Corporation have many internal systems and environments to monitor. Focus was dedicated to Fusion System Test and Demo environments. Overall technical architecture internally is changing rapidly, is extremely dynamic and sparse. Indentified requirements internally for additional metric collections, lower level focus and drill downs relating to CPU/Memory, Connections and Session events.

  • 1. Extending Oracle monitoring tools to meet your business needs Margaret Mills Senior Principal Database Administrator Oracle Corporation (EBS/Fusion Environment Operations)
  • 2. Summary….
    • Oracle Corporation internally is like any other customer. We often have to support products and technologies before “real” packaged tools and plug-ins are available.
      • Enterprise Manager can help you to proactively monitor and report on these products and technologies with relatively minimal customization requirements.
      • Get the most out of your “Mickey Mouse” scripts. Turn them into impressive Enterprise Manager alerts and reports.
  • 3. Safe Harbor Statement The following is intended to outline our general product direction. It is intended for information purposes only, and may not be incorporated into any contract. It is not a commitment to deliver any material, code, or functionality, and should not be relied upon in making a purchasing decision. The development, release, and timing of any features or functionality described for Oracle’s products remains at the sole discretion of Oracle.

  • 9. Extensions to Oracle Enterprise Manager
    • Best Practices
      • Base Groups or Systems on like components (eg. Hosts)
      • Place custom scripts (UDM’s) in central location (eg. NFS mount)
      • Create a central user to own/run UDM’s (eg. NIS user/dbsnmp)
      • Set UDM Warning/Critical Thresholds if require alerts
      • Create generic reports using selectable Target
      • Use variable target values in reports (examples below)
        • ??EMIP_BIND_TARGET_GUID??
        • ??EMIP_BIND_TIMEZONE_REGION??
      • Base email reports on variable reports
        • Email reports require specified target
      • Base reports on required target ranges
        • Use rollup views CURRENT, DAILY, WEEKLY where possible
