Cancer By The Numbers•  Cancer is the second leading cause of death in the US,exceeded only by heart disease, accounting for 1 of every 4deaths.•  About 77% of all cancers are diagnosed in persons 55 years ofage or older.•  About 5% of all cancers are strongly hereditary.•  Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related deaths inboth men and women.   3. 3. 2013 New CasesThere will be an estimated 1,660,290 new cancer cases in America in 2013*.There will be anestimated 66,090 newcancer cases in Illinoisin 2013.*Excluding basal celland squamous cellskin cancers and insitu carcinomasexcept urinarybladder. Stateestimates areoffered as roughguide and may notadd to US total dueto rounding.
  4. 4. 2013 Estimates•  28% of new cancer cases in male patients will be Prostate Cancer.•  29% of new cancer cases in female patients will be Breast Cancer.•  Lung Cancer will be the leading cause of cancer-related deaths.*Excludes basal and squamous cell skin cancers and in situ carcinoma except urinary bladder.
