What is Infant Massage?
Infant Massage is a traditional ‘art’, facilitated by a Certified Infant Massage Instructor (CIMI) incorporating positive nurturing touch provided by the parent or close caregiver together with their baby, encompassing massage strokes and techniques. (N. Garmson)
Infant Massage is about ...
• Using the correct pressure, rate, rhythm and stroke technique, facilitated by a certified Infant Massage Instructor (CIMI)
• Learning to understand your baby’s verbal and non-verbal cue’s -
What are verbal cues? What tone of voice does your baby use? Are they ‘squealing’ in delight or ‘whining’ because they are tired (examples only).
What are non-verbal cues? Pay attention to your baby’s body language, is it positive or negative? Look for openess and willingness to receive massage. ‘No’ body language – eg look at face eg grimacing, yawning; arms eg jerky movements
• Respectingyour baby’s communication
• Teaches your child what is ‘appropriate positive touch’ and that it is okay to say ‘no’ to massage
