  2. 2. ITCamp 2012 sponsors Private & Public Cloud@ itcampro # itcamp12 Premium conference on Microsoft technologies
  3. 3. Objectives• This session covers migration from System Center Configuration Manager 2007 to Configuration Manager 2012• We will discuss any topic related to migration• Please bring your own questions and scenarios@ itcampro # itcamp12 Premium conference on Microsoft technologies
  4. 4. Agenda Private & Public Cloud• Discuss topics related to migration, including: – Prerequisites for migration to Configuration Manager 2012 – Planning for migration and coexistence – Configuring the source hierarchies – Creating migration jobs – Configuring distribution point sharing – Planning and performing client migration – Upgrading the distribution points – Converting secondary sites to distribution points – Monitoring and reporting for the migration process – Decommissioning the source hierarchy@ itcampro # itcamp12 Premium conference on Microsoft technologies
  5. 5. Your proposed topics• Your questions@ itcampro # itcamp12 Premium conference on Microsoft technologies
  6. 6. Migration Overview Private & Public Cloud Source hierarchy: New hierarchy: Configuration Manager 2007 Configuration Manager 2012 Configure source Central Site hierarchy Central (Primary) Administration Site Configure additional source sites Migrate collections and objects Primary Sites Migrate clients Primary Sites Convert to Secondary Site Secondary Site distribution point Migration is performed side-by-side@ itcampro # itcamp12 Premium conference on Microsoft technologies
  7. 7. Objects that can be migrated • Collections • Operating System • Advertisements Deployment: • Boundaries – Boot images – Driver packages • Software distribution packages – Drivers – Images • Virtual application packages – Packages – Task sequences • Asset Intelligence customizations • Software Updates: • Software metering rules – Deployments – Deployment packages • Desired Configuration – Templates Management: – Software update lists – Configuration baselines – Configuration items@ itcampro # itcamp12 Premium conference on Microsoft technologies
  8. 8. Collection restrictions• Sub-collections are migrated to individual collections that contain inclusion rules• Mixed collections cannot be migrated and must be recreated New Device Collections York node Servers Desktops New York Servers Desktops Configuration Manager Configuration Manager 2007 2012@ itcampro # itcamp12 Premium conference on Microsoft technologies
  9. 9. Consolidating sites• In Configuration Manager 2012, a primary site cannot be a child of another primary site• Plan for consolidating primary sites during migration CEN CAS Migrate clients NYC LON USA EUR Migrate clients CHI PAR Install DP secondary CHS Uninstall LYO Convert to DEN secondary Distribution point@ itcampro # itcamp12 Premium conference on Microsoft technologies
  10. 10. Preparing for Migration• Install Configuration Manager 2007 Service Pack 2• Plan for Windows Server 2008, SQL Server 2008, and 64-bit• Consider implementing BranchCache with Configuration Manager 2007 SP2 as an alternative to distribution points• Consider virtualizing your Configuration Manager deployment• Avoid mixed collections and sub-collections• Use UNC path (servermyappmyapp.msi) in package source• Ensure that site codes between Configuration Manager 2012 and Configuration Manager 2007 are unique@ itcampro # itcamp12 Premium conference on Microsoft technologies
  11. 11. ConfigMgr 2007 Prerequisites • Only Configuration Manager 2007 sites with Service Pack 2 are supported for migration • To gather data, you must configure the following two accounts with permissions for each source site: – Source Site SMS Provider Account, which requires Read permission to all source site objects. Assign Site Delete permissions on the source site to automatically remove the distribution points – Source Site SQL Server Account, which requires Read and Execute permissions to the source site database • Ensure you have network connectivity for NetBIOS, RPC and SQL (1433)@ itcampro # itcamp12 Premium conference on Microsoft technologies
  12. 12. ConfigMgr 2012 Prerequisites • Use an account that has the Full Administrator security role in Configuration Manager 2012 hierarchy • Configure a software update point in your System Center 2012 Configuration Manager hierarchy that uses the same synchronization source as the software update point in your System Center Configuration Manager 2007 hierarchy • Configure at least one Configuration Manager 2012 primary site or the central administration site to use the same port numbers as existing 2007 site for client requests, which enables the use of shared distribution points from a Configuration Manager 2007 site@ itcampro # itcamp12 Premium conference on Microsoft technologies
  13. 13. Distribution Point Sharing• Configuration Manager 2007 distribution points can be shared with the new Configuration Manager 2012 hierarchy• Content already present on the distribution point is made available to Configuration Manager 2012 clients• Shared distribution points can be upgraded in-place to Configuration Manager 2012 distribution points Configuration 1. Migrate Configuration Manager clients Manager 2007 Primary 2012 Primary Site Site Distribution point sharing makes the content immediately available to 2. Access content migrated clients Shared Distribution Point@ itcampro # itcamp12 Premium conference on Microsoft technologies
  14. 14. Converting Secondary Sites toDistribution Points • When upgrading a distribution point that is co-located on a Configuration Manager 2007 secondary site, the upgrade process will first uninstall the secondary site • The process waits until next data gathering cycle, before upgrading the distribution point • Content present on the distribution point will be converted to the Configuration Manager 2012 single instance store Configuration Configuration Migrate Manager Manager clients 2007 Primary 2012 Primary Site Site Configuration Distributio Manager n Point 2007 Convert to Secondary distribution point Site@ itcampro # itcamp12 Premium conference on Microsoft technologies
  15. 15.
