Not only is this work being done by a myriad of in-house labs and with outside service providers, but the services performed cross both preclinical and clinical development. There are very few types of operations or services that impact both the preclinical and clinical development activities for a compound as much as bioanalytical labs do. And the need for these services is growing. Not one of the services ISR tested in this research is expected to decline in activity over the next two years. Initially ISR hypothesized that, if we saw a growing market, it would be attributed to the growing number of large molecules in the development pipelines. However, these survey data show that growth is anticipated for both small molecule and large molecule tests. The market dynamics that surround bioanalytical lab services are not unlike those of the general clinical development market, albeit with a higher percentage of outsourcing than clinical development overall. What we find is that the majority of this activity is outsourced, but not to the extent of central lab activities, that sponsors do not have an overwhelming preference for large, multi-service CROs vs. niche providers, and that many of the outsourcing decisions are driven by preferred provider agreements. The purpose of this report is to give both sponsors and bioanalytical lab service providers a view into the current and future market landscape and provide an objective review of service provider performance. These data can be used to plan for future resource requirements, to develop outsourcing strategies, to inform tactical/ operational and strategic planning, to enhance service offerings, and for organizational benchmarking. This report includes topline data on 28 bioanalytical lab service providers, performance is highlighted for 17 providers based on the number of responses received for each, and eight (8) of the leading providers are profiled in a cross attribute manner. In total, this research captures 289 service encounters.
