  • One of our most dedicated developers – Tom Robertshaw of Meanbee in the U.K. has taken it upon himself to do some exhaustive research on the eCommerce platform landscape. He looked at the home page of the top 1 million Alexa sites and analyzed them for identifying features, covering 32 different eCommerce packages. This analysis shows more stores using Magento than any other platform. We feel that this is attributed to the perfect balance of having an open-source platform with features that rival high-end, proprietary platforms.
  • Here’s a quote from Forrester: “ The Magento system integrator ecosystem is significant, with estimated collective revenues approaching $1 billion annually.” And that’s just system integrator revenues. When you factor in all the other players genererting revenue across our ecosystem – 3 rd party developers, designers, technology partners – the total revenue number soars past the billion dollar mark.
  • Magento Enterprise was born in 2009 in order to serve the growing demand for a Magento product that meets the flexibility and performance demands of merchants, fully utilizes our engineering expertise and our experience with the Magento community and which is fully supported and warranted by Magento. Started as an open source community project, the Magento architecture is available as open source code as a free download and is intended to promote shared innovation from the entire Magento development community. An extremely supportive and active community of eCommerce experts and enthusiasts is always using and experimenting with the source code providing excellent feedback for advancements that we then consider for our warranted and supported products – Magento Enterprise and Magento Mobile. W e do minimal testing on the community project and do not provide documentation for it. As our commercial product, we invest considerably in Magento Enterprise R&D, testing and quality assurance. We release features with Enterprise to support our customers and what they need to create effective online stores. Magento Enterprise (and Mobile) are available on a subscription basis, which means that as long as you are a Magento Enterprise customer you will get the benefit of the latest technology, new and improved features, plus all bug fixes, at no additional cost. We provide several maintenance and several major releases each year – all of which go through comprehensive testing.   • Our architecture enables customization WHILE maintaining upgradeability to future versions The event driven architecture make it easy to enhance applications – in whole or part. The Zend framework provides a stable, Object Oriented Programming basis for Magento. Our MVC Architecture provides full, 100% flexibility for frontend site design through separation of the presentation layer from the business logic layer. Our layout xml files allow you to shuffle frontend blocks (together with their functionality) and arrange them in the way you want. Magento's rendering system is also very flexible and provides a unique and powerful way of doing customizations. The API opens the catalog, customer and order modules for real-time integration via web services. Magento has been utilized for integration to SAP, MS Dynamics GP and NAV, legacy as/400 systems, Mail Order Manager, CRM systems and more.
  • In developing Magento we leverage our thorough understanding of how an eCommerce business works. We understand all of this because Magento (originally Varien) was an eCommerce consulting and website design firm. We created sites for companies. Magento is a flexible and customizable with rich capabilities to market, merchandize, sell and manage a successful on-line commerce presence. It is designed so that companies can have complete integration with their business processes - from product development or purchasing to sales and marketing, back-end integration with operations, even reporting and analytics. The focus of my time with you today is to talk about what we do with and for developers. But for those of you who are new to Magento we’ll take a few minutes to review our products. Magento Enterprise takes everything from the open-source core and adds special features for a truly robust product. These Enterprise only features include things like customer targeted and rule-based promotions, integrated email marketing, performance enhancements like full-page caching and Solr Search and sales boosters like persistent shopping, automated emails to reduce cart abandonment, gift options and a number of desirable admin controls. We provide an easy-to-use content management system that enables the creation of custom Landing Pages, personalized content based on user profiles and content staging capabilities that requires no IT involvement or development knowledge.
  • Now we’re going to take a quick look at some of the important functionality that comes with Magento Enterprise out-of-the-box. We could literally spend hours going through all of the features so I’m just going to focus on a few here today.
  • To begin with it’s important to note that Enterprise is extremely flexible and completely customizable. Here are a few examples of what some have done to uniquely brand their store.
  • This general area called Marketing Tools actually encompasses a large number of features including the ability to integrate Search Engine Optimization and Search Engine Marketing capabilities (getting customers to you) plus Marketing tools that help turn browsers to buyers such as: Promotions Product suggestions Consumer generated product reviews and ratings Upsell and cross-sell tools And so much more! This screen capture is from Custo Barcelona, a worldwide retailer of trend-setting fashion. This site ( implemented by partner Gorilla) was built to broaden the brand’s appeal internationally and create a fashion-focused shopping experience that takes full advantage of cross-selling. A “complete the look” feature offers recommendations for complimentary products that follow selections from the product page to the checkout counter, driving average order totals.
  • Here ’s a great example of how Toms shoes uses upsell and cross sell techniques throughout the shopping experience to increase conversion rates and revenue. Toms doesn’t just show the customer what they came to find – they present the customer with an added selection of products based on the consumers behavior and shopping patterns. Upsell and cross-sell tools such as these not only help increase the size of the order but they also increase brand loyalty and these features are available with Magento out-of-the-box.
  • You want your store and your products to stand out and Magento allows you to customize the look and feel of your store to match your brand. We provide an easy-to-use content management system that enables the creation of custom Landing Pages, personalized content based on user profiles and content staging capabilities that requires no IT involvement or development knowledge. Magento Enterprise supports Solr search capability and layered navigation so that customers can easily find the products they are searching for. At the heart of your business are your products. Magento makes it easy to present a customized product catalog.
  • Furniture retailer BluDot has used Magento Enterprise to create their highly customized furniture ordering system. Magento solution partner (Lyons Consulting Group) completely integrated the Blu Dot product catalog with the Magento platform and their back-end ERP system to handle all site updates and orders in real-time. This was a distinctly complex endeavor because each component of Blu Dot’s modular furniture is treated as a separate item. For example, each door color for a cabinet has to be treated individually. Each cabinet is a composite of unique items. This “composite product” functionality is another out-of-the-box feature of Magento Enterprise.
  • Once you begin building your online clientele you want to make sure to turn them in to loyal, repeat customers. Magento Enterprise helps you do this with the ability to customize campaigns for target customer segments; employ loyalty and rewards points programs and encourage friends and families to shop with wish lists and gift registries.
  • When Fun4Kids was upgraded to Enterprise (by partner The Pixel) they implemented a reward point system, letting customers obtain points to generate discounts on further purchases – helping to increase repeat business. Magento Enterprise also enabled Fun4Kids to enhance their up-sell and cross-sell capabilities so they always present consumers with additional options and choices. They also provide the ability for consumers to submit product reviews, which helps increase customer engagement and utilizes the best sales tool – word-of-mouth recommendations. As an added benefit Magento supports the ability to convert loyalty points at different rates for different customer groups. So for example…VIPs can convert points at a faster rate than other customers. Or perhaps you want wholesalers to convert in a different manner than consumers. We support options that fit your business and your customers.
  • Infrastructure While many of the Magento Enterprise capabilities are important elements in sales and customer satisfaction, it is equally important that your back-office operations are well integrated with your sales operations. There are a number of admin capabilities that will enhance your ability to create and manage sites such as being able to create multiple sites from one Enterprise instance. You are able to track and review administrator actions and restrict access roles to specific stores. And of significant importance to many of our customers is the ability to easily integrate Magento Enterprise with third party ERP and CRM systems. We often hear that one of the main reasons customers and partners choose Magento is the flexibility and ease with which the Magento installation can be integrated with backoffice applications. This customer Xtreme Geek and sister company Scientifics Online are two independent sites created on one Enterprise instance. They use a number of third party software apps for the front end and backend and have integration with an AS400 for ERP.
  • Private sales site, Exclusively.In, manages a complex multi-vendor environment with Magento’s built-in levels of administrative control and strong backend integration. It’s important to note that Magento has features specifically designed for private sales sites. As a private sales site Exclusively.In is constantly adding new vendors and products; sometimes up to dozens each day and they have a wide breadth of products – clothing, jewelry, travel, home décor and more. Their heavily customized Magento Enterprise site (built by One Pica) allows administrators to add vendors and their products on a constant basis. They are able to manage all backend processing including reporting, payments, returns and real-time inventory management within Magento. The system relies on a barcode application that uses product photos to ensure the correct items are picked for orders, and it integrates seamlessly with a unique ERP system. This is a complicated environment that Magento made possible.
  • Performance: Enterprise SEO integration capabilities can help you get people to your store and then highly tuned page performance will help ensure their experience is satisfying. Enterprise supports full page caching for all users, which means once a customer visits your site Enterprise can cache the contents of an entire page. For example: the homepage is typically accessed most frequently and full-page caching allows the web server to significantly increase the performance for this page. Bandwidth is therefore not effected by frequent visitors and thus maximum performance is maintainted for customers. The Enterprise architecture is designed to support thousands - tens of thousands - of transactions per hour. Order archiving Lighten the load on the database by archiving order history after a certain period of time. Security/Compliance When it comes to transferring customer data – especially payment data – strong security is a must – for your business and for your customers ’ peace of mind. Magento Enterprise is PA-DSS compliant platform and supports strong data encryption. To be addressed on an as needed basis: {PHP Accelerator PHP is an interpreted scripting language. The process of running a PHP scripts includes a few steps – reading a script file from hard drive, parsing and compiling bytecode and finally running the bytecode. PHP accelerators essentially cache compiled byte code eliminating the process of reading and compiling. This results in less file and system I/O. Well known PHP accelerators eAcceleartor and APC are tested and fully compatible with Magento Enterprise. Additional configuration of other elements include providing real path cache configuration for size and time to live (ttl) as well as enabling php.ini }
  • Zenni is an online optical retailer with personalized product selection tools. Their original site was built on an old version of X-Cart. Their Magento partner (One Pica) rebuilt the site from scratch on Magento Enterprise. Zenni is currently using 4 servers   -          2 web servers –2 Magento instances -          1 Python/Image Rendering Server for the Frame Fit [pupil-detection] system -          1 Database machine Major Results: Performance – the Magento install easily manages the huge increase in daily site visitors with great performance: • On peak days Zenni experiences up to 80,000 unique visitors / day On average they experience 40,000 unique visitors/ day Bringing more people to the site had the desired result of increasing orders: • Orders increased by 30% 4,000 to 5,000 orders/day Of those who used the “try on” capability 14% made a purchase Additional benefits: After deploying Magento Enterprise Zenni realized many functional and performance benefits. Here ’s a partial list: • Full page caching • Database caching • CDN using “original pull” mode • Xcache and Memcache • Fine tune the apache and MySQL configs considerably based on the memory of each machine, CPU cores, etc. • Use of AJAX as much as possible to help keep bandwidth to a minimum and response as quick as possible. • Modification to some of the checkout/cart code to speed up the checkout process – usually the slowest part of the system. • Utilization of several scripts that run hourly/daily help to remove unused assets.
  • Magento Enterprise is a scalable platform. As you grow you can scale your Enterprise implementation to accommodate an ever increasing number of visitors and buyers. This example shows that you can easily support a growing number of transactions (linearly) with great performance by adding another web server. We’ve reviewed some of the capabilities of Enterprise and although there’s a lot more to cover I will close this section of the presentation by reiterating that Magento Enterprise is a robust, flexible, architecture designed to adapt to your business requirements.
  • Administrator is able to create shipping labels and print them for: UPS USPS FedEx DHL Labels can be created, view and printed for: New shipment Existing shipment (including where shipping label exists) Multiple labels for selected shipment (Mass action) Multiple labels for selected orders Store view scope
  • RMA, it is the ability to return or exchange products on-line. Most etailers today need to support the ability to return or exchange products.   We spoke to many merchants, partners and users and evaluated different methods of implementing an RMA process.   We took great care to ensure that the feature is not limiting to merchants, provides structure when they need it and flexibility when they want it. Customer and administrators can manage returns of existing orders Support for all product types Support for partial returns and partial authorization Allows individual items to be returned Configured for the merchant’s needs including: Return management flow Specifying products allowed to return Shipping methods Customer RMA capabilities Customer notifications
  •   Today, online users use different browsers and devices to interact with online stores.
  • To help provide a seamless browsing / shopping experience from device to device and browser to browser we developed “Persistent Shopping.” In general, the feature preserves information about customers using a long-term cookie. Once a customer logs in to the site a long-term cookie is established for that browser/device combination. The customer is now able to view the contents of their shopping cart in subsequent sessions without logging in again. With persistent shopping cart, a customer can add a product to their shopping cart from one browser session at work, review his shopping cart and change the product configuration from his mobile device and then complete the transaction at home with another computer (session login required initially per browser/device combination to establish the long-term cookie). The persistent behavior feature reduces consumer frustration when they try to access their shopping cart from multiple browser sessions. This feature also enables merchants to provide promotion, according to pre-defined segmentation rules, encouraging consumers to add items to the shopping cart and complete their purchase. Magento Enterprise 1.11, persistent shopping capabilities are extended beyond the shopping cart to other features including wish lists, recently ordered items, view and comparison and customer group membership  
  • This is a packaged offering built around Magento Enterprise. Today, Magento Connect is the world’s largest eCommerce application marketplace. … with more than 5000 extensions are available These extensions have been downloaded more than 4 million times, putting over $100 million in the pockets of our developers annually.   • With this change, we’re also introducing “Trusted Extensions,” which represent the gold standard for extension reliability, stability and support. The Trusted Extension designation brings a new level of confidence and trust to the world of Magento extensions. All extensions for Magento Go are reviewed by Magento to earn “Trusted Extension” status. In the coming months, we’ll be working with developers to bring “Trusted Extensions” for our other solutions as well.
  • Magento has created a full set of training classes for those responsible for implementing, deploying and managing an e-commerce business. The courses will provide both merchants and our partners with the key skills and knowledge necessary to build powerful and effective e-commerce solutions. Courses are delivered with a balanced mix of lecture and lab to enhance retention and practical applicability. Instructors are all selected for their expertise with the Magento platform as well as their experience in the e-commerce marketplace. You can check our website for a full schedule of classes. Down the road we also plan to add a Magento certification program.
  • Also with the goal of ensuring your success we have a group of experts in Magento that provide consulting services. These folks put Magento proven methodologies, techniques and best-practices to work for you. Because their mission is to work with the technical staff implementing a site or to aid in the diagnosis and resolution of a problem they primarily work in conjunction with a Solution Partner but they will work with an end user who has in-house technical expertise.
  • I’ll touch briefly on a few other key groups that serve our customers, starting with our support team. One of the our greatest achievements of the past 12 months has been the transformation of our support effort. Thanks to new leadership, staffing growth and the implementation of best practices, we’ve dramatically improved performance on every important metric. Our Customer Success Group was formed earlier this year, specifically to ensure that Magento Enterprise customers are have the best possible experience with our product. Thanks to their efforts, are renew rates for Enterprise continue to increase. And finally, the folks who make it happen everyday in field, our sales and channel teams. The great news is that we can’t hire people fast enough to meet the demand for merchants and partners who want to be part of the Magento ecosystem – it’s a great problem to have.
