TWO KEY MESSAGES Great opportunity for Irish companies to participate in H2020 20% of budget is targeted at SMEs More focus on innovation activities – closer to the marketplace Demonstration of impact is critical (consortiums need industrial partners!) New dedicated SME instrument Opportunities in all work programmes (ICT embedded in almost all work programmes / societal challenges) Benefits of participation include funded research, strategic partnerships and ‘intelligence’ TSSG can help Be part of a consortium (as covered by Kevin) New SME instrument
    • The SME instrument has been designed specifically for single or groups of highly innovative SMEs with international ambitions, determined to turn strong, innovative business ideas into winners on the market. The instrument provides full-cycle business innovation support from the stage of business idea conception and planning (phase I) over business plan execution and demonstration (phase II) to commercialisation (phase III). Participants will be able to call on business innovation coaching for the duration of their project { } May-­‐16-­‐14   3   DEDICATED SME INSTRUMENT

    • AND FINALLY CONSIDER H2020 BE REALISTIC! As part of your overall research funding strategy – medium term results – combine with shorter-term (EI-funded) projects – ideally linking / showing progression Success rates can be low (depending on call 1:20 – 1:4) PERSEVERANCE IS KEY Resubmit – ESR is very valuable – address the comments of the evaluators TAKE A LONG TERM VIEW 3-4 years – Become a partner – progress to a WPL – and then (maybe!) a coordinator role
