  5. 5. ¿Cómo se prepara para el viaje?• As a group we will get familiar with Ecuador and the places we’ll visit: • Classroom discussions • Learn about culture, customs, traditions with assistance from ISE Beyond the Classroom Wiki • Internet research for trip• Seek out additional opportunities to practice Spanish
  6. 6. ¿Qué vamos a hacer en Ecuador?• Visit Otavalo, the largest handicraft market in South America• Visit Mitad del Mundo and put one foot in each hemisphere!• Go ziplining in the nearby Mindo rainforest

Hechos interesantes sobre las familias ecuatorianas• Family stays occur in Quito• Families live within walking distance of the Academia Guayasamin school, where students will take Spanish classes• Most families live in the La Floresta neighborhood• Most Ecuadorian host families do not have teenage students in the home – they have small children or are retired couples

  10. 10. ¿Cómo se seleccionan las familias?• ISE works with Academia Guayasamin (a top- notch, family-run, Spanish school in Quito), and the director of the school recruits all families• Host families must complete an application and have a home visit conducted before being accepted
  11. 11. Más información sobre las familias• Spanish host families are selected by ISE in- country family stay coordinators• Most families are known personally by the coordinator• Host families are expected to provide room, board and a genuine family experience for visiting ISE students
