Vision <ul><li>Set up a youth network of twin-teams training and competing in Reverse inclusive Wheelchair Twin- basketball, </li></ul><ul><li>Outcomes expected to increase Social Inclusion of Persons with Disabilities and </li></ul><ul><li>Enhance a favorable attitude to overcome Borders and Political barriers </li></ul>

  5. 5. Socio-cultural Context The Peres Center for Peace has lunched several years ago a project of twin Palestinian – Israeli sport schools concentrated in soccer and other popular activities
  6. 6. 10 th of May <ul><li>First joint activity of twin-sport schools on Palestinian side of the project “ Twinned Peace Sport Schools ” </li></ul><ul><li>Crossing borders and barriers in Palestinian home court in Beit Jalla </li></ul>

Children with disability <ul><li>Are more likely to be socially isolated than able-bodied peers (ABP); </li></ul><ul><li>Spend more time under 1 X 1 treatment conditions rather than social play compared to ABP; </li></ul><ul><li>Exhibit reduced physical fitness than ABP </li></ul><ul><li>Underprivileged; underserved </li></ul>

Contributors <ul><li>Primary granting authorities are the Fund for Demonstration Projects @ Division for service development of the Israel National Insurance Institute enabling the Sal-Gal (Twin Basketball) operation within Israel </li></ul><ul><li>The Peres Center for Peace in the Middle East granting the twin sport school operation and the equipment (sport whhelchairs) of the Beit Jalla Team </li></ul><ul><li>Israel Sport Center for the Disabled </li></ul><ul><li>for setting up the teams, coach fee, Basketball wheelchairs for participants with and without disability are required </li></ul><ul><li>Lifegate, a Palestinian charity of Beit Jala </li></ul>

Recruitment <ul><li>On   1st   Feb 2010, about 25 children and adolescents aged 14 – 18 from Beit Jala, Palestine and   Rishon Lezion ,   Israel   met at the court of the Israeli team for a joint activity of twin wheelchair basketball </li></ul><ul><li>On May 10 th the first encounter hosted in Palestinian authority took place.   </li></ul>

Classification principle <ul><li>Players are classified into each of four performance categories based on both skill and function. </li></ul><ul><li>1-point : players who are not able to reach the regular junior height basket; </li></ul><ul><li>2 points : players who have limited function and skill; </li></ul><ul><li>3 points : for players who have good function but limited skill or limited function and good skill; </li></ul><ul><li>4 points : stand for players who have moderate to good skill and good function. </li></ul><ul><li>14 points are allowed on court during the game time . </li></ul>

Rule book <ul><li>Generally the rules of junior basketball apply with main basket height set at 2.55 meters. </li></ul><ul><li>Additional low baskets (1.20 meters height) are located at the center of the zone's base line. Shooting into the low baskets is only allowed to the 1-point players. </li></ul><ul><li>Screening 1-point players while shooting is only allowed to other 1-point players. Time limits in the zone do not apply to these players. Screening 1-point players by a higher category results in a 2-minute discharge penalty. </li></ul><ul><li>Offensive players are required to cross the midline within 24 seconds . </li></ul><ul><li>Only personal defense is permitted – from the midline. </li></ul>

Coach Education Topics of a 2-day seminar included: (a) how to match a wheelchair to a player, (b) athlete-wheelchair interface; (c) the classification system; (d) basic wheelchair skills e.g., maneuvering the wheelchair, dribbling, passing the ball, and shooting to the basket (e) game rules.

Peace Games <ul><li>Activities followed one after the other and included </li></ul><ul><li>Wheeling and stopping to handshake with a partner, </li></ul><ul><li>Passing in groups, </li></ul><ul><li>Passing and wheeling, </li></ul><ul><li>Shooting to baskets at different heights, </li></ul><ul><li>Touch-down games a lead-up activity toward wheelchair basketball. </li></ul>

Participants ’ Statements <ul><li>In Sports I am the best, my skills are always improving. </li></ul><ul><li>In the beginning of this program, I thought that the Jewish kids are going to hit us . </li></ul><ul><li>Now I know they are my brothers and sisters and we have normal relationship. </li></ul><ul><li>I have three Israeli friends, but I forgot to take there numbers... </li></ul><ul><li>I think that playing together is good, because we play as a team not as Arabs and Jews </li></ul>

And another one! <ul><li>I started playing with the program since the beginning. </li></ul><ul><li>I did not know anything about Israelis from before, but now I know that they love sports just like me. </li></ul><ul><li>I have an Israeli friend his name is Noam. I think it is good to have friends. </li></ul><ul><li>I want to talk to Noam but I donot have his number [yet]. </li></ul>
