For me the fish who jumps out of the fish glass is a symbol of entrepreneurship
Why is that so?
He changes how things are done among fishes in this glass
He takes great personal risks and demonstrates 100% passion and persistance
But what must it be like for the fish?
Before jumping:
The fish would be electrified by the opportunity he sees as the only one but at the same time the fish should be afraid and a little insecure
Most other fish would say he is crazy
During the jump:
Cold and uncomfortable, little to no air to breathe
A mix of feelings: yes I am doing it! I am great! And oh no, I am not sure if I will make it!
After the jump:
Great, I did it! Look at me you narrow minded fish!
Oh, it‘s different here from what I though. A little bit lonely though.
After a little while:
Oh, now another one comes here, and another one, and another one
They say it is not so difficult, everybody can do it. But it was really difficult for me!
But I know, I was the first and nobody else did it before me! And if it were not for me most likely everybody would still be in the left glass.
Have you taken any big jumps yet in your life? Are you up to taking one?
To speak in the language of the fish my mission today is
to push you a bit to take big jumps and to give you some tools to prepare for big jumps
To do this I want to introduce you to one basic assumption we share at egopreneurship
What you need to be a successful entrepreneur is a lot of persistence! But how can you develop persistence?
One way to become more persistent is to follow your true passion. But how can you find out what really is your burning desire you will give your ultimate best to achieve?
A true passion is different for each person. So we have to look at your personality. Your passion is already imprinted in what you are and what you have experienced. The difficult thing is to become crystal clear about this passion.
But if you do it helps you to increase your performance and persistence at a factor of about 10x
We will start with two tools to get an idea of your personal life situation.
The first tool to dig into your personality is to look at the different roles you have in life, because working and setting up a business is only one facet of your life.
It might be the one taking most of the space and energy for some time. But it needs to be well integrated with the other facets. The overall composition creates the beauty, not the single most beautiful part.
Only from integrating the different roles in your life with each other, you will have the energy necessary to become a great entrepreneur.
1.So please take an empty sheet of paper and a pen
2. Turn the paper to landscape format
3. Draw a 5 cm oval in the middle
4. Make a mind map with the most important roles and tasks in your life
5. Write ‚Me as an entrepreneur‘ in the middle – How does that feel like? Does it feel right?
6. What role in your life support you being an entrepreneur the most? Where is the greatest conflict? If you have a big conflict do not postpone dealing with that.
The next takes a fresh look at your path of personal development.
The river is a symbol for your life‘s development and it is a tool to change your perspective a little.
First, think about your earliest memories and stories you have been told about your early years. What was it like?
Now draw the source of the river and how it initially develops. What does it look like, what is its environment? What does it feel like?
Now, think about going to pre school and school. Maybe you moved to a new place? New friends, new tasks. What was it like?
With these thoughts in mind draw the first part of the river. What are its turns? Does it grow fast? Is it playful or straight?
Than, think about graduating from school, possibly taking the entrance exam, maybe going to university, maybe other education or work, again new people and also the discovery of new interests.
Continue to draw the river symbolizing this stage of your life. Continue up to the point where you are sitting here in this room at this very conference.
Take a look now at the overall picture. What does it look like? How do you feel looking at the river and its development?
Where could the river go next? Any ideas?
I invite you to use the next exercise to make your ideas become more clear. Before I can start the exercise though, I need to introduce a key concept to you.
What do you see?
Anybody who does not see the cube?
So we could discuss now whether there actually is a cube or not. Later maybe. But what is important here, that the cube connects the forms in a meaningful way. With the cube we can remember the picture and we could draw something similar.
The cube exemplifies one of the most basic characteristics of the human mind: we construct meaning. And our mind needs meaning to work efficiently.
So if you want your mind to support you in the process of becoming an entrepreneur, better feed it with an appropriate meaning. Doing that will uncover the true power of your mind and help you to become ultimately successful.
So what can you to sharpen the definition of the meaning of your life?
I have brought a question with me. It is only one questions, but it has helped and many others to approach the search for meaning more systematically.
But truly answering that question requires changing the perspective a little. This is why I would like to ask you: please close your eyes!
I
Imagine you are old. You have lived a rich and fulfilling life. Now you have fatal illness.
You know that your time will come soon. But you have no fear. Because you are happy with the life you have lived.
This knowledge makes you calm. Not everything happened the way you wanted.
But you do not need to regret, because you always knew what you wanted to do.
While you are following your thoughts your favorite grandchild comes in. He or she sits quietly and waits for your attention to turn.
You look at him or her and say: What is it my dear? Whats’ on your heart?
The child says grandpa or uncle, you know you need to die soon. Why are you not sad?
You say, because my dear, I have lived my life to the fullest. I have found and fulfilled my purpose. How could I be unhappy than? This is all a man can wish for.
The child pauses. After a while he or she asks. So, grandpa / uncle looking back: What was the purpose of your life?
Please take a last sheet of paper and sketch down some first ideas how you would like to answer this question. (5 mins)
Would anybody like to share some first ideas? What do you imagine to tell about your entrepreneurial career?
