If you choose to use different client examples, please contact the reference owner to gain permission to use the references externally.] Hello. Thank you for attending. Over the next 30–40 minutes, I will be talking to you about: The opportunities and challenges on a smarter planet What that means for the systems you depend on to run your business And what IBM is doing to provide smarter systems that can enable you to balance the opportunities of a smarter planet with the resources you have available to achieve them.
  • Speaker note: Theme is activity generating data Instrumented, Interconnected, Intelligent devices are being sold by the billions (4 examples) … generating huge amounts of information to store and protect (3 examples) A F1000 Insurance industry client , whose case study produced the email data, coined the phrase “data rabbits” to describe how email multiplies in the systems after it’s created. = = = = Background 4 billion camera phones sold through 2009 2.5 billion RFID tags sold in 2009 55 billion text messages on New Years Eve Text messages generate 400TB of data per day in the US Source: International Telecommunication Union. = == = = The average email is forwarded, copied or stored by users over 10 times; and copied over 100 times in backup and archive systems Source: F1000 client case study
  • IBM has invested billions of dollars in storage technologies <click> On the left here we have IBM’s SAN Volume Controller, now with 7 years mature code. This gave us storage virtualization capabilities which could be applied to a heterogeneous environment, as well as thin provisioning and enterprise class data protection features such as Flashcopy and remote mirroring with Metro Mirror and Global Mirror. With SVC we have shown how can improve utilization of storage, improving the efficiency of the environment. <click> With XIV, we have shown the market just how easy storage can be to manage, with an incredibly easy to use GUI Interface, making tasks such as provisioning storage a low skill activity. <click> From our high end, mainframe class storage system, the DS8000, we introduced significant efficiency feature called Easy Tier, to provide automated storage tiering. This means you can fully optimise an investment in SSD’s, delivery up to 200% performance improvements with as little as 6% of capcity being based on SSD’s. Of course DS8000 is also based now on a very mature and highly efficient RAID code, developed and enhanced over many years, providing the highest performance levels and stability.
  • All these technologies, formally only found in Enterprise products, are brought together in the new Storwize V7000 offering.
  • Summarize key capabilities Reference the fact that large enterprises have had these capabilities Demonstrate how it is useful for midmarket also

    • 1. “ Modular Virtual Storage” Taming Data Growth, Changing Habits and removing the distinction between Enterprise and Midrange Barry Whyte – Master Inventor IBM Systems and Technology Group
    • 2. In 1999 10 Billion Paper bags used in US alone – that’s a lot of trees! “ As a result, they are everywhere. They sit balled up and stuffed into the one that hangs from the pantry door. They line bathroom trash bins. They carry clothes to the gym. They clutter landfills. They flap from trees. They float in the breeze. They clog roadside drains. They drift on the high seas. They fill sea turtle bellies.” National Geographic Online Between 500 BILLION and 1 TRILLION plastic bags are used worldwide every year 2.5 Million Tons of Supermarket plastic bags disposed in 2008 Solution : Stop using disposable bags, and “ change our habit” as Shoppers…
    • 3. The World is Becoming Smarter Every Day And Creating More Data Than Ever Before
      • 2.5 billion RFID tags sold in 2009
      • 4 billion camera phones sold through 2009
      • 900 million GPS devices sold annually by 2013
      • 76 million smart electric meters in 2009. 200M by 2014
      • 2 billion people will be on the Web by 2011
Data is changing the game Scale and complexity bring new challenge Smarter systems for a smarter planet We need to change our “Storage Habits”
    • 4. Do we want our datacenter like this?
      • How do we stop this?
      • We need the same kind of “habitual change”
      • We’ve all made the leap to “modular virtual servers”
      • Why not the same for our storage?
    • 5. Lets step back a second… What do we mean by Enterprise?
      • Enterprise has always been thought of as large companies
      • Spending tens or hundreds of million $ on IT infrastructure
      • These companies expect :
        • 24x7x365 availability (or the traditional 5x9’s at least!)
        • Expandability beyond initial purchases
        • Fault tolerance and the ability to recover from disaster
        • The leading edge technology for speeds and feeds
      • So a smaller customer
      • doesn’t need the same
      • from their IT systems?
      OF COURSE THEY DO !!!
      • In todays 24x7 culture
        • Even the smallest of businesses suffer from downtime of IT systems
        • They are likely to have a web presence
        • The impact of their systems failing could impact their very survival
    • 6. The problems with traditional Midrange Storage
      • So why have storage vendors been able
      • to “get away” with producing “midrange” boxes?
      • (IBM included)
      • Much less reliability
      • Less features and functions
        • usually at substantial additional cost
      • Average speeds and feeds
        • usually controller limited , not disk limited
Often they are even more complicated and therefore more costly to manage than Enterprise boxes
      • With the explosion of data throughout all businesses the issues are the same
        • How do we manage all this stuff?
        • How do we grow in line with our business growth?
        • How do we recover should it go wrong?
        • How do we meet our compliance requirements?
        • How do we make ourselves more efficient ?
        • How can we make better use of what we already have ?
    • 7. So what if there WAS a Storage System that Allow You to… !
      • Bring you Enterprise Class storage, at a midrange cost point ?
      • as well as …
      • Manage the information explosion without complexity
      • Improve productivity - by doing more with less
      • Increase storage utilization
      • Start small and grow by adding building block modules
      • Quickly integrate into your existing storage
      • Enhance storage efficiency with Advanced Storage Software
