  • Strategy is a key element of Cisco’s success. The most fundamental way in which John Chambers views strategy is around the idea of change, and how change affects our customers; in essence, he believes that market transitions that most effect our customer define competitive opportunities for Cisco. Cisco prepares for market transitions by listening to customers and by taking risks, innovating and investing 3-5 years in advance of a major transition in order to capitalize on it before competitors when the transition is realized in the market. As John says, “by the time our competitors recognize the transition, it’s too late to catch up.” Our ability to anticipate and prepare for market transitions is the “DNA” or “plot” of Cisco’s success strategy for us, and our customers.
  • Why power of participation ? It’s really about what transformations we are seeing in our marketplace. Evolving internet from the 90’s which was all about ‘connection’ – business to business, business to consumer – and enabled the connections to partnerships that hitherto weren’t possible, and would previously have been done through M&A Then the last decade, as far as the internet is concerned, could be typified by Social media and closer interactions, which in turn have started to transform the interactions between people and businesses. Also, in the latter stages, a big trend towards the user populations using their consumer devices to access corporate IT resources as they demanded the superior user experience available at home as in the office – very hard to manage, with inherent connection and security concerns So looking beyond that, in the years ahead, we see a new era emerging one which Cisco entitles the ‘participation era’ – so what’s that ? Many more ‘immersive’ technologies – for example, Video in Cisco has become a business critical communication vehicle, and many of the companies we talk with are really seeing the value of video. But also Mobility – mobility of workforce, mobility of data, mobility of workloads in an already connected world. To react to these pressures, we see emerging IT service paradigms and service provision business models, so the increasing importance of Cloud and Virtualisation, which our customers tell us is a big driver for them to re-examine their networks. Of course a critical challenge in all this is how do you secure it – within your own walls and into the cloud, and across physical and virtual boundaries. So the ‘participation era’ describes the transformation to next generation organisations due to increased participation These market transitions are those that are now familiar to us and market transitions that the previous BN launch also addressed in March. Increase in mobile devices in the workplace – challenge that IT resources are static/declining = manageability & security challenge Blurring of borders - the challenge here is to provide access to applications and services across these boundaries, anywhere, anytime, any device, whilst maintain security and visibility. Finally, the projected increase in video traffic and the need to provide a high quality experience to an increasing number of endpoints, places significant demands on the performance of networks. One of the solution options to address the challenge of the increasing mobility of workforces is desktop virtualisation. According to Forrester, 56% of organizations want to virtualize their desktops to ease the management and control of remote access 66 million hosted virtual desktop (HVD) units connected by 2013 (Gartner, Emerging Technology Analysis: Hosted Virtual Desktops March 2009) Manageability, security and remote access are some of the key driving forces for client virtualisation. As the borders blur between our personal lives and the workplace and between the physical and virtual worlds, more and more applications and services are moving to the Cloud. Cloud infrastructure and services are expected to grow at an average of 25% per year over the next 5 years. This market shift also provides challenges of visibility and control of corporate applications. And finally the surge in video traffic will place double the demands on bandwidth resulting in performance challenges. IT visibility, control needed for video (IDC, Demonstrating the Value of a Foundation Network July 2009 ) 3D streams will require ~twice the bandwidth and performance (based stereoscopic video requirement to deliver 2 separate visual streams) What Cisco is demonstrating with this latest launch is how it can bring together functionality from two of its architectures to jointly address these business challenges.
  • So we talked before about market transitions, and of course you wouldn’t expect a Cisco presentation to not mention the network ! When we looked back in 1998 we saw an opportunity around servers – its cpu running at 350MHz, its I/O running at 2GBs and a standard connection typically at 100Mbs – so a big gap in the server’s ability to onload and offload information and the network’s ability to handle it Walk this forward 10 years and there’s a similar transition now – a CPU at say 3.2 GHz and the I/O at say 16Gbs and a 1Gb network interface – still a x10 performance gap. But now, we’re also considering server virtualisation, so we can start to really drive that bandwidth and also needing to solve problems like the sprawl of virtual machines – so clearly we need an architectural approach to help manage and capitalise on the transitions. So John talked a lot about market transitions and I talked a lot about architecture. I want to walk you through how this can be very meaningful to Cisco and to our investors. When we looked back in 1998, we saw a very similar opportunity, and this had to do with the technology that was in the servers. The CPU was running at about 350 MHz. The I/O -- this is the ability to get information on and off the CPU -- was at about 2Gbps. And the standard interface on the server ran about 100Mbps. So there was a huge performance gap -- 10X -- between the ability of the CPU to pump information in and out of the network and the network's ability to handle it. We play this forward 10 years. We see the same transition being able to play out. CPUs now, 3.2 GHz, I/O about 16Gbps -- a big delta between the performance of a 1Gbps interface and the capability of the I/O of the modern CPU -- 10X, same performance gap. But there's an additional market transition going on, this one for Virtualization of the server. So now, with many virtual machines, there's no question that you can drive that bandwidth. And there's also these questions of scaling the virtual machines, solving the problems with virtual machine sprawl. This lends itself to an architecture approach. If you take those two components in combination, that's really what's going to drive this market transition to Nexus and this architectural approach in the data Center.

  • Today literally the Data Centers are at the heart of business transformation. As businesses of varying sizes look to Data Center consolidation and Cloud-based services, they’re realizing that every dollar of investment there has a ripple effect in terms of productivity and efficiency across the rest of the organization. Our customers are voting with their dollars making it the biggest line item on their Enterprise budget. Cisco is also viewing this as a strategic spend area. Streamlining Data Center Agility and Efficiency helps transform Enterprise IT letting our customers and cloud based services, they’re realizing that every dollar of investment in the data center and cloud, is providing a ripple effect on the rest of the organization in terms of productivity and efficiency. The Data center is a key component of the overall IT strategy driving a significant portion of investments there. Many CIOs are being measured on the business impact they can create . This means being accountable for new service creation and revenue generation, driving profitability and productivity and being flexible enough to deliver new business models with need-based governance and risk mitigation Cisco is uniquely positioned to address these top CxO care abouts. Alongwith a rich partner ecosystem, Cisco can deliver solutions like Endpoint virtualization (VDI/VXI), Cloud Computing (Private/Public/Hybrid clouds), Workload consolidation and Business continuity to name a few. The solution differentiation is made possible due to the emphasis Cisco places on Systems engineering. Cisco’s Unified Fabric and Unified Compute System approaches embody the network and compute led thrusts in the Data center that provide the foundation to deliver on true architectural flexibility, investment protection and lower TCO. They offer an open, scalable, hi-performance foundation on which to offer key network, compute and application-level services whether it be network, compute or application services. These address the new challenges that are arising in Data centers and across the rest of the enterprise today. Virtualization happens to be a new trend as well as a catalyst for change. Application performance and fluency across the data center and into the enterprise is increasingly becoming important with applications becoming more pervasive and device agnostic. Security is top of mind and trust-based security is key especially as companies move into cloud based models, virtual services etc. Energy Efficiency and management is increasingly important and our customers appreciate the thought that Cisco brings into play on understanding that. In a bid to simplify operational complexity and reduce costs, many of our customers are increasingly placing emphasis on automation. Finally with virtualization taking root, and with server capacities and spending flat lining, the need to better optimize the resources, and move workloads seamlessly and transparently across the organization is becoming imperative. Cisco’s Unified Fabric and UCS pillars allows us to provide holistic solutions instead of silo’d answers. They go hand in hand with Cisco Life cycle services and our ability to provide management simplicity including through policy based managed. A lot of these capabilities are built on the innovation engine from Cisco across our product portfolios. Whether it be switching, storage, compute or application services, to name a few, these are truly the best in the industry. These are standards-based and also help accelerate the innovations for our customers to drive efficiency, agility and transformation across their organization. If you look at this, this is very similar to how we approach our customers with our borderless networks architecture. These are connected and linked to a common customer value proposition.

  • Cisco has long innovated in developing enterprise-class data center IP services. In FY08 and 09, Cisco delivered a range of new and expanded services for the data center. We brought branch server hosting ONTO THE NETWORK through Windows Server on WAAS, jointly launched and marketed with Microsoft. WAAS was also expanded to better accelerate cloud computing, and earlier this summer WAAS branch deployment s became “on-demand” and greatly simplified through a simple software download to the ISR G2. ACE was more tightly integrated with VMware’s vCenter management console for better virtual server enablement and integration – a simple “one-click” to begin provisioning a virtual instance of ACE. Cisco NAM monitoring and analysis was also virtualized and ported to the Nexus 1000 platform.

The SOLUTION DIFFERENTIATION is achieved not just by Cisco working alone, but many of our differentiated solutions are a result of our deep collaboration with a rich ecosystem of partners. These are aligned to the roadmap we shared as part of our DC 3.0 strategy of consolidation, virtualization, automation and cloud. Today many of these phases are blurred and rightfully so. Our customers are in different stages of IT maturity globally, and the architectural framework and our solution portfolio needs to have the flexibility to address these varying needs. We have multiple touchpoints and multiple routes to market. Many of these solutions are really built on the SYSTEMS EXCELLENCE that Cisco offers. This is a true competitive differentiation for Cisco. What do I mean by that? We’re not throwing some products and features at our customers and asking them to figure things out. Our innovations are Open and standards based. We bring system level tents like performance, energy efficiency, security, resilience and top care abouts like workload mobility into our offering. We test, validate and provide Cisco validated designs that are really blueprints for our customers providing a faster deployment model, and quicker time to market. Cisco’s Unified Fabric, Unified Computing and Unified Network Services are the foundational pillar for our Data Center Business advantage framework. Together, these help deliver architectural flexibility, investment protection and lower TCO. Unified Fabric and Unified Computing represent our network and compute-led building blocks, while Unified Network Services helps provide flexible L4-L7 services across dedicated or virtual service nodes, offering flexibility and choice, while maintaining simplicity of policy based provisioning, consistent management and providing workload flexibility. We’re bringing together the interworking of many of our innovations into these three pillars to help strengthen the Cisco value proposition against point-product competitors and highlight the systems excellence. We’re also bringing greater synergy between our Unified Fabric and Unified Computing portfolio, so irrespective of whether you lead with a network or compute-led thrusts, we’re able to showcase the Cisco differentiation and also bring in the concept of “service-readiness’” with Unified Network Services. Over time this greatly reduces the cost of ownership for our customers. Our competition is still figuring out how to make this work in a uni-dimensional manner. Cisco has a culture of INNOVATION and let’s be proud of it. We make a significant investment in innovation and driving a lot of our innovation into standards bodies and help accelerate the innovations for our customers to drive efficiency, agility and transformation across their organization. Whether it be switching, storage, compute , our OS or application networking components, we have leadership positions across the industry. Our ability to have POLICY based management and provisioning across the layers is another differentiator which solves a huge operational overhead for our customers. Let us not forget the CISCO LIFECYCLE SERVICES offerings which helps handhold and intersect our customers across their entire lifecycle, driving innovation and lowering their total cost of ownership. What you see in this slide is the power of Cisco. And why we believe that Cisco Data Center solutions can deliver a true Business Advantage to our customers, our channels and to our solution partners. So how can you leverage all of this? As we engage in product level conversations, this presents us with a significant opportunity to up-level the conversation and engage the business decision makers moving the conversation “up the stack”. These will let us maximize the opportunity, and together with our partners, our lifecycle services offering help us to provide a holistic architectural outlook, instead of going head-on against a point product player. Let’s leverage the strengths we have on the network to bring in the Unified Compute differentiation and vice-versa. Many times, our customers are silo’d as well. The server administrators don’t understand the implications on the network side, and vice versa. Our strategy of unification helps bring these silos and have more productive conversations that not just differentiate ourselves, but also let our customers maximize their investment dollars. We have probably got the industry’s best set of services as part of our Unified Network Services portfolio and this is a strategic differentiator for us that can change the conversation. The diversity of our solutions, the richness of our partner ecosystem – we have more in our portfolio of goodies, than what our customers realize at times.
