  • So, ALL of you here today will be aware of the headlines covering ‘Energy Efficiency’ issues ….. Power and HVAC …. These are the big two for the DC BUT, I would like to try and summarise some other DRIVERS and influences …… under the waterline ……. Many of us in the DC Supply Chain are on the periphery … we cannot offer large, one-hit savings on the electricity bill with a new AC perfector … In some ways I am grateful for this …. as some of the technology and ideas, which are marketed so slickly, seem to be …………….. TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE …… So let’s make a quick review of what lies beneath the waterline …… The whole ENERGY EFFICIENCY iceberg …..
  • SO, this is my MINDMAP …….. of Energy Efficiency ….. 2010 ….. Over the next few minutes, I plan to try and highlight some of the key areas …. A few weeks ago I spent a few days listening to the pros and cons of PUE …… and GPUE which is a commercial spin ….. an interesting way of making PUE just that little bit more relevant to the ‘Green’ issue. It introduces a weighting system using the 2008 Sovacool Study as a base, to see if Data Centres are as GREEN as they claim …… For example and I quote ….. An interesting example is Microsoft’s massive “green” data centre in Chicago that they say has a PUE of 1.22, sounds great? But on closer examination … you find their power comes from? 72.8% coal, 22.3% nuclear, 3.8% mixed, 1.1% renewable…still sounds green to you? Me neither. PUE rightfully does not change with the amount of renewable used. It simply isn’t a metric about  true greenness  but how well you manage your power and therefore should not be used for green marketing. The first area I would like to focus on is the CRC Efficiency scheme ……………….
  • What is the Carbon Reduction Commitment Energy Efficiency Scheme? Well ….. It’s a UK “Cap & Trade” scheme to reduce energy use year by year. Designed to create a shift in awareness, behaviour and infrastructure In April 2011 allowances must be purchased for every tonne of CO2 emitted, initially at a fixed price of £12 / tonne CO2 From 2013 allowances will be capped by 5% per year and publicly auctioned,…….. The price is expected to rise! Government will publish an annual league table showing the comparative performance of the 5000 participating organisations If you get an opportunity you should visit the Carbon Trusts website ……………….
  • UK Commitment is a legally binding target 80% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 34% reduction in CO2 by 2020 Who qualifies in the UK? Mandatory reporting for all 175,000 half hourly meter owners (that’s approx 20,000 organisations) Any organization spending more than £500,000 on electricity in 2008 must join the allowance trading scheme ….. Top 5000 organisations must join the emission trading scheme as full participants All state-funded schools & universities ……… All central government departments regardless of size Who is going to get fined £50K and face two years imprisonment? Well any CEO / CFO who does not comply … A league table will rank the 5000 organization against three metrics Absolute Metric : % reduction compared with previous year Growth Metric : percentage reduction per unit of turnover Early Action Metric : Actions taken before April 2011 The league table will be publicly available There is a Potential to make a profit by being at the top of the league table Each year 20% of organizations will be audited
  • NOW ……. Let’s take a closer look at …… HOW CRC … E .. E ..S may effect the DC BUSINESS over the next few years ……. UK’s knowledge economy employs 41% of population ……. And …………. Accounts for 50% of GDP today so a major part of the UK economy .. Digital Europe (formally EICTA) has already committed to reducing its carbon by 20% by 2020 The UK has taken a leadership role on DC efficiency British Computer society and the Carbon Trust have been key players in the development of the EU Code of Conduct for Data Centres HOWEVER a number of industry experts believe that the CRC Efficiency Scheme will critically hurt UK DC Business …….. Collocation will be considered more viable outside of the UK because of the traditionally higher energy costs in the UK and the added burden of CRC EES …… To quote a few DC leaders …….. Kate Craig-Wood of …. Memset: 'The EES creates the incentive to launder, rather than reduce, carbon emissions; [it] rewards organizations good at playing the 'carbon game', not those who are most energy-efficient.' ……… Brian Murray, principal consultant at international IT services company Morse has commented and I fully support this view …. It all comes down to whether enterprises decide that EES is an onerous piece of legislation introducing additional tax and should be avoided, or that they want to make it part of their existing carbon-control programme -………………. This is the 'first cut' of EES ….. it is likely to change and be revised with time, and those companies who have registered for it are best placed to influence its future direction.   • So NEXT ON THE MIND MAP is the EU Code of Conduct …… BREEAM ….. LEED and ENERGY STAR ….. What are these schemes? How do they benefit / effect my DC?
  • We have a number of schemes which set standards for building sustainability ‘Green Building’ and more recently ……………… Green DCs Bree … am The first green building rating method to emerge in 1990 is benchmarked against UK building regulations. LEED Stemming from a BREEAM framework ….. Was established by United States Green Building Council ….. ‘Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design’ which has become an international hit …….. Its flexibility allows application to all building types ….. HOWEVER, they have dragged their feet in their consideration of the fact that data centres are worthy of a different standard for this coveted LEED certification. Only recently has a committee been formed to consider this market …. The LEED rating system was designed for commercial office buildings, not data centres. In fact, it is nearly impossible for a data centre to qualify as a LEED facility unless it is included in a mixed-use construction project. Green Star, not to be confused with Energy Star, is a method developed in Australia by the Green Building Council in 2003 ….. It is based on 9 categories …similar to LEED …. But, due to the diverse environments across Australia the final score is weighted against environmental factors Energy Star scheme is run by the EPA ……… The US Environmental Protection Agency and is based on reducing energy consumption …. Which should be the major determinate of GREEN for data centres … ONLY sites that achieve more than 75% on the EPA benchmark scale will qualify ……. It will definitely be meaningful and should encourage more management interest in energy conservation …. One interesting fact is that the Energy Star ratings are based on 120 DCs that volunteered actual data and they base the measurements on energy kilowatt hours NOT kilowatts off the UPS …. The measurements are then converted to SOURCE ENERGY which compensates for different fuel types …. Remember Microsoft !!!! BUT there is no climate correction factor !!! The EU Code of Conduct for Data Centres is a flexible mechanism to initiate and develop policy to improve energy efficiency; it creates a forum for industry and experts to have continuous dialogue on market, product  and system performance. Through the Code ambitious voluntary standards and commitments are set. Perhaps a question that you should consider on the way home is ……. What are the Environmental whole life costs of your Data Centre and which schemes will best help your company achieve ….. ‘shareholder value’ ? If we look at the EU Code of Conduct take up …….
  • We can see that it looks as if the UK is starting to take ‘sustainability’ seriously …. This is a list of EU Code of Conduct Participants …………….It is taken from the EU website on 23rd September 2010 ….. Launched on the 20th November 2008 …. Nearly 2 years ago ….. The UK is obviously pushing forwards but you don’t have to look far to know that there is still a long way to go!! As a point of reference a Google search for DC’s in the UK will throw up 60 / 70 colo ‘s …… alone …

The Council provides a platform for companies to explore sustainable development, share knowledge, experiences and best practices …………… Electronic Industry Citizenship Coalition is a group of companies working to improve conditions for workers, for the environment …… for communities and reduced risk to the supply chain …. in electronics industry …… The Green Data Center Alliance was created as a neutral foundation to find, review, implement, and track Green initiatives inside the data centre envelope. Again I would encourage you to have a look ….
  • Next on my MAP I would like to mention briefly the hundreds of innovations being made available and it is important that the industry accesses and implements these products …….., for example the…. Researchers at the Institute of Optics …… University of Rochester …. have tested a strategy for moving water and coolants on silicon chips. Using a short- pulse , high-intensity laser, they have created tiny grooves in silicon … 100 microns apart ……these exhibit strong capillary action — they quickly wick water along, even against gravity…….. The grooves are not smooth: by carefully controlling the laser, the researchers were able to create nanoscale cavities and protrusions. These improve the wetting properties of the material and raise the possibility of moving lots of water or other coolant along them. “ an extremely efficient way of taking all the heat away.” In the Hard drive business, Galleon Corporation have developed a coating for the moving parts of the HDD assembly and on test found a reduced power consumption of over 50%. In so doing all the oil is removed and replaced with Nitrogen, so the resultant drive is green as you get. In the world of BMS there is a High Definition temperature measurement ….. using a single optical fibre cable, you can monitor and record thousands of points continuously along its length. BUT beware of the MARKETING HYPE ……. Savings in ‘Operating Carbon’ do not always justify replacement, for example, …… for a laptop the operating carbon is about 25% of the embedded carbon …. In other words, buying a slightly more efficient laptop - solely because it may be Greener - may not be doing your company or the world any favours ……. You need to do some sums and ask your suppliers some difficult questions ….. NEXT I WANT TO HIGHLIGHT ……. share PRICE …. If we can Create value for the shareholder most Financial Directors will find the CAPITAL EXPENDITURE ….. … For your Energy Efficiency Business Plan
