So who is Riverbed? We may not be a household brand name, but we are not a startup company. Riverbed is the IT infrastructure performance company… for networks, applications and storage. We are a profitable, stable public technology company. We have a very strong balance sheet – lots of cash and no debt. Our products are already relied upon by 54% of the Forbes global 100 – they are in use at over 6,000 enterprises around the world of all sizes, from the largest enterprises to small regional business and non-profits. They are used in virtually every country and in every vertical market. They are deployed in branch offices, data centers, and laptops; they are deployed on ships, oil rigs and even in war zones.
Riverbed’s products work equally well (and have been accepted) across all industries. Some of the largest companies in the world, some of the best known brands, depend on Riverbed to optimize their application performance across the WAN.
We have partnered with many of the vendors customers rely on. These companies, some far bigger than Riverbed, have chosen to work with us because of how much better we can make their technology perform across enterprise WANs. Some of the most interesting: are the leading storage vendors, including EMC, which optimize data protection, backup, and replication, VMware who we OEM in delivering our RSP Microsoft who we work with in the POLP (Protocol Optimization Licensing Program), WHQL test, and we OEM Windows Server Core for the RSP. HP Procurve chose Riverbed to build up its competitive advantage in the router market Checkpoint to deliver security in branches on the RSP Autodesk for AutoCAD and Revit applications in the architecture, construction, and design industries
Increase worker productivity - boost top line revenue and business achievements: Focus on the ROI and NPV Speed up applications Enable collaboration Let your IT staff be strategic
In this section we’ll examine how some of our customers have maximized their IT infrastructure performance with Riverbed.
Now we’ll look at the products themselves and how they will work in your environment.
Riverbed has the most comprehensive WAN optimization solution available. Our technology allows us to leverage the same code base (RiOS) between the data centers, branch offices, and mobile workers. The main product lines are Steelhead appliance and Steelhead Mobile software.
It’s important to note that Steelhead Mobile, unlike other mobile products, was created by using the same code that runs the Steelhead appliance. So while Steelhead Mobile is a 1.0 product, it is based on 6 th generation code. Steelhead mobile contains many of the same features as the Steelhead appliance, including the features that give us greater speed than the competition as well as ease of use features. With our auto-discovery functionality, we can help ensure that Mobile clients can easily connect to the data center steelhead appliance with no changes to applications or clients. It contains the same application-independent foundation to support data reduction and TCP streamlining, as well as application streamlining modules to dramatically increase the performance of certain application protocols such as CIFS for file sharing and windows-based applications, MAPI for exchange, and HTTP for web applications. Version 1.0 of the software does not contain SSL optimization, so HTTPS is currently passed through.
Data Streamlining uses a proprietary algorithm to break up the data into small referenceable data chunks and store them in the central steelhead. The first time a file is sent through the network, all the data and reference links to the data are sent to the remote steelhead. (A “cold send”) The cold send is still optimized with the TCP and application optimizations discussed on the next slide. Next time data is requested the central steelhead needs to simply send references to data on the remote steelhead. If parts of the data has changed, the steelhead simply sends the chunks of data that have changed, with new references. The file is then reconstructed using a combination of the changed and unchanged data.
A basic challenge with TCP is that it can only send a small amount of information at a time. Transport Streamlining allows Riverbed Steelhead appliances to communicate over the WAN with optimal TCP settings, facilitating more efficient communications. In addition, Steelhead appliances repack each packet with references instead of raw data. That means each packet could carry virtual megabytes of data instead of the typical 16, 64, or 100 K of data.
Application Streamlining enables the central steelhead to act as a client and request data from the application server. This eliminates typical back-and-forth over the WAN and contains it to the LAN, where transactions are always very fast.
Riverbed has the greatest number of Application-specific optimizations of any vendor. By doing so, we provide the best possible performance across the applications that enterprises care about the most. We also support security features for many of these applications -- like SSL, encryption, and SMB signing. Compare to Cisco with only CIFS (file cache), MAPI (unencrypted only), NFS, and CIFS Print. Or Blue Coat with only Caches for CIFS, MAPI, HTTP, or SSL.
We’ve focused particularly on Data Protection use cases, as by their very nature they require moving a lot of data long distances over the WAN. Many specific features are included to optimize DR traffic with it’s heavy demands. These include the ability to do data reduction in memory, which is faster than on disk, or even adaptively depending on the load. We offer Quality of Service, so you can decide if you want to prioritize DR activities above or below other business use of the WAN. High Speed or Maximum Speed TCP allow you to get the absolute most from your available network capacity. CPU offload features use multiple cores and also let you find the right balance between more compression or faster throughout, depending on the data going across.
Security is an important concern, and Riverbed has a thought this through carefully with a range of security features at every point, including encryption of data on the network and on disk, and role based administration. This can help for customers worried about audits for government or industry regulations or standards such as HIPAA or the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS).
Here we will discuss features and products that extend beyond the Steelhead appliance itself for a more complete solution.
Deployment of Steelhead mobile is a snap. Deploy the Steelhead mobile controller in the Data center. This can be deployed anywhere that the CMC would be deployed – essentially anywhere that would be accessible to end user machines. Using MSI packages, you can push Steelhead Mobile software out to clients. MSI packages ease the install process. In machines without admin privileges they temporarily elevate privs. to do the install. MSI packages also enable easy rollback or upgrade, ensuring that lifetime maintenance of the software is easy. Steelhead mobile clients first get a policy and license from the Steelhead mobile controller. The policy includes an optimization policy. Licensing is concurrent licensing, meaning that the Steelhead Mobile controller manages a ‘pool’ of licenses and any client can receive a license if one is available. Finally, the Steelhead Mobile client connects directly with a steelhead appliance to perform optimization. Note that while the client has no bandwidth or TCP limitations the Steelhead appliance does. The end result is that mobile users now get the same LAN-like experience that Steelhead appliances have been able to deliver in branch offices.
Helping our customers do more with less extends outside the main datacenter to branch offices, home offices, or wherever workers roam. The RSP enables customers to simplify their operations in branch offices by running “local” applications like DNS/DHCP, Print, and security directly on the Steelhead appliance. Our partner, VMware helps us deliver this virtualization, reducing costs and complexity in the branches. Steelhead mobile boosts performance significantly for remote workers, letting them be productive with performance so good it’s like they’re still on the LAN. It even adapts dynamically for the type of internet connection they have, from DSL/cable, to WiFi, to 3G.
Our Riverbed Services Platform (RSP) allows organizations to move extend their virtualization and consolidation efforts from the data center to the branch. Local applications can also be virtualized and run on the Steelhead appliance, giving organizations the ability to further reduce their infrastructure sprawl without impacting the end user experience. To achieve this Riverbed has essentially embedded virtualization within our appliance. That means that customers cannot only accelerate applications to the edge, but they can RUN applications at the edge without additional hardware. Moreover, because of our implementation, customers can run one of our partners’ applications or they can run their OWN applications – essentially anything they want. And they can do this without a forklift upgrade to the hardware – just use their exisiting Riverbed hardware in most cases.
Key message: it’s not just virtualization, but an innovative approach that allows other packages to leverage the RiOS acceleration pathway along with the functionality of additional packages. Since we’ve incorporated VMware, the feature set gets much broader and the architecture provides a lot more flexibility. Instead of one partner package, customers will be able to run up to 5 packages inside of multiple RSP instances. There will be Taps provided at all stages of the optimization process, and it will be possible to define rules that indicate what the transactions between each stage of optimization and each of the RSP packages should look like. Steelhead is in a unique position in the network; as a result, it sees all the data that flows in and out of the branch, providing it with a strong advantage in access and visibility. The RSP functionality we’re looking at here means we will leverage that position to not only enhance the functionality available on the Steelhead and consolidate servers more effectively, but also to provide access to data that applications can’t get otherwise. For example, a security application might need access to data in the clear to be able to scan for malicious code, which can be done in this model because the Steelhead can decrypt the traffic and pass it to that RSP module before running it through the optimization policy.
Emphasize there is a model family for any size location and that they have performance specifications that can be cost effectively upgraded within a model family as WAN demand grows. Often this is enabled by just a software license key, although some do require hardware upgrade, but this can be easily added onsite. Interceptor lets customers cluster multiple Steelhead appliances for even greater scale and high availability in data centers.
Close the presentation with a recap of many of the key attributes of the technology.
We’re not just about great products, we have a range of services to deliver a complete solution from architectural design, to deployment and tuning, to support around the world.
