  • Introduction IT is undergoing a transformation. The current ‘accidental architecture’ of IT today increases procurement, management costs, and complexity while making it difficult to meet customer service level agreements.  This makes IT less responsive to the business and creates the perception of IT being a cost center.   IT is now moving towards a ‘private cloud’ model, which is a new model for delivering IT as a service, whether that service is provided internally (IT today), externally (service provider), or in combination. This new model requires a new way of thinking about both the underlying technology and the way IT is delivered for customer success. While the need for a new IT model has never been more clear, navigating the path to that model has never been more complicated. The benefits of private clouds are capturing the collective imagination of IT architects and IT consumers in organizations of all sizes around the world. The realities of outdated technologies, rampant incremental approaches, and the absence of a compelling end-state architecture are impeding adoption by customers. By harnessing the power of virtualization, private clouds place considerable business benefits within reach. These include: Business enablement: increased business agility and responsiveness to changing priorities; speed of deployment and the ability to address the scale of global operations with business innovation Service-based business models: ability to operate IT as a service Facilities optimization: lower energy usage; better (less) use of datacenter real estate IT budget savings: efficient use of resources through consolidation and simplification Reduction in complexity: moving away from fragmented, ‘accidental architectures’ to integrated, optimized technology that lowers risk, increases speed and produces predictable outcomes Flexibility: ability of IT to gain responsiveness and scalability through federation to cloud service providers while maintaining enterprise-required policy and control The need for a new IT model has never been more clear, but navigating the path to that model has never been more complicated The realities of outdated technologies, rampant incremental approaches, and the absence of a compelling end-state architecture are impeding adoption by customer.
  • Slide 13 – The Journey to the Private Cloud We’ve defined Three Phases of the journey These phases are defined by the percentage of virtualized infrastructure The 1 st phase is “IT Production” which ranges from 0 to 30% virtualized The 2 nd phase is “Business Production’ which ranges from 30 to 80% virtualized And the 3 rd phase which is 80% virtualized moving to 100%
  • Slide 15 – The Journey to the Private Cloud Let’s look at the next phase of the Journey – Business Production. This is where most IT departments get stuck because it deals with the most mission critical applications Like ERP, e-mail, CRM, decision support and business analytics. You’ll need The very best quality of service The highest levels of availability The highest levels of protection, compliance &amp; security And the ability to scale on demand without disruption This is by far one of the most difficult phases in the journey, but it is where EMC can help you out the most as we have a complete set of infrastructure products and services and we have deployed the most mission critical systems for many decades.

  • Obviously, to support pervasive virtualization a broad range of operating and applications need to be supported without making changes to the operating system and applications that are to be hosted. Vblocks provides the broadest support for both operating systems and applications within the industry. Firstly, Vblocks supports a broad range of Linux and Windows operating systems that means many existing servers can simply be virtualized using physical-to-virtual migration techniques. Secondly, Vblocks also supports over 300 applications that have been certified and validated by the ISV as being supported on Vblocks: http://www.vmware.com/solutions/partners/alliances/vmware-isv-partners.html . Lastly, Vblock Solutions Engineering are validating a number of applications to provide prescriptive guidance as to how best operationalize these applications on Vblocks. This includes VM profiles, data store guidance, performance tuning, as well as sizing data to help accelerate optimize the application deployment, as well as better operationalize the application environment.

  • Vblocks provide predictable SLAs to the business, but also predictable levels of power and cooling, capacity, scalability, etc.
  • Technology Innovations - Vblock Infrastructure Packages (VIPs) Vblock Infrastructure Packages are integrated IT offerings from the VCE coalition, combining best-of-breed networking, compute, storage, security, and management technologies with end-to-end vendor accountability – integrated into a whole new way of delivering IT to business and validated to enable the creation of customized solution packages by the channel, partners, and ISVs. Rather than customers buying and assembling individual components, Vblock Infrastructure Packages are validated, secure, de-risked and warranted. The Vblock Infrastructure Packages roadmap includes a preconfigured infrastructure, which puts the benefits of private clouds within reach of small to medium-sized businesses. Vblock Infrastructure Packages have been designed and built for a broad range of specific customer implementations. Currently, there are three Vblock Infrastructure Packages available. Vblock 0: 300 – 800 VMs Vblock 1: 800 - 3000 Vblock 2: 3000 - 6000
  • First and foremost, it should be stated that Vblocks are built for pervasive – 100% - IT virtualization and the platform is designed to be not just virtualized, but also virtualization aware and virtualization optimized. This is the fundamental building block upon which private clouds will be constructed. To support this, the VCE coalition has integrated best-of-breed products from Cisco, EMC ad VMware and designed Vblocks to deliver IT infrastructure that delivers the broadest set of virtualization capabilities in the industry. As organizations evolve their IT to virtualized infrastructure, they do not want to compromise: in fact they want better something that offers “better than physical” Vblocks provides “better than physical” capabilities in a number of areas: Security: Vblock security capabilities extend from securing the Vblock infrastructure at physical, virtualization and application layers. Additionally, Vblock security framework can be extended using Vblock solutions such as RSA that enhance the security of Vblocks to include two-factor auth’n and Auth’z with audit trails and incident reporting Multi-tenancy is closely related to security using additional features to provide segmentation of resources to ensure application, line of business or organizational separation to meet compliance (PCI, HIPPA, SarBox) or service isolation (service provider IaaS hosting) requirements. Vblocks offers extremely rich MT that enables physical and logical isolation of resources on a common platform. High-availability: Vblocks offers rich HA functionality that enables integration of existing HA functionality for investment protection and operational needs, as well as new capabilities that enable tiered HA to meet the availability needs of mission critical as well as non-business impacting applications. Service tiering: As we move to SLA driven IT, the ability to define different service tiers and actively promote applications to higher tiers, or demote to lower tiers without disruption is critical. Vblocks enables service tiering, including multitenant environments, enables resources to be allocated according to business/user priority and provides the foundation for chargeback models based upon the cost of resources consumed. Performance: A key design consideration was to provide a platform that can support a wide range of applications with a rich set of features enabled within the Vblock without impacting performance and efficiency. These considerations also looked at performance of storage and disk sub-systems within the Vblock that helped to VCE to select platforms and components that have been balanced to meet real-world deployment needs. It should be noted that Vblocks are not designed to support one application, but rather support a range of applications that would be seen in private cloud environments. Management &amp;Orchestration: To operationalize Virtualized IT, Vblocks offers a management framework that enables integration with existing ESM tools and monitoring systems, while simplifying the allocation of resources to meet SLA objectives by offering provisioning, configuration and compliance management across all components – Compute, Storage, Hypervisor and Network - within a Vblock.
  • Vblock management offers a broad range of APIs that can integrate an multiple levels into existing management stacks. This is ideal for enterprise monitoring systems as they receive performance and fault information directly from the source without passing through intermediate layers that may or may not be available. This also provides investment protection for existing platforms, processes and does not require retraining - a critical consideration as Vblocks is intended to reduce operational impacts: instead of introducing more platforms, the VCE coalition want to simplify the environment! This open framework enables organizations to select the tools and processes that best fit their need s. However, one area where the VCE coalition felt we can add value with Vblock is orchestration of resource allocation in a repeatable, reproducible and auditable fashion using design patterns or catalogs that provides the foundational IT automation layer upon which private clouds are enabled, and is where the development of Ionix UIM had it’s genesis. UIM offers a wealth of capabilities that enable it to allocate resources within a Vblock to meet service requirements and SLAs. UIM is the first collaborative effort within the VCE coalition that unifies orchestration across all components within the Vblock. As an example, if a new hypervisor needs to be deployed, an admin may select a compute node with the right characteristics – CPU, RAM, etc – and assign that to a particular ESX cluster. A predefined template will then be applied to the compute node that identifies it’s BIOS setting, VLANs, network interfaces, WWN, Boot LUN, image, and LUNs, etc that it needs to join that cluster. All the admin needs to understand is that if cluster “Gold” needs expanding, apply the “Gold” service-profile to that compute node. UIM supports Configuration : UIM provides configuration templates that can be combined into service profiles (see later slides) to meet service profile needs. This ensures accuracy, consistency and compliance Provisioning : UIM supports self-service IT catalogs as well as scheduled provisioning of nodes to meet service needs Compliance : if an admin changes a configuration from say UCS Manager, UIM can detect this, raise and alert and log the username or source IP address, timestamp and configuration and either remediate immediately, or raise an alert. Transactional integrity : if one operation fails, UIM can roll back to a known good configuration and raise and alert.
  • Title Month Year Templates can be used to take IT requirements for an application and quickly translate them to a set of resources on Vblock. This reduces configuration errors and speed time to implementation.
  • Title Month Year The next step is to enable the Private Cloud by being able to define business requirements which can then be translated through IT needs which are then mapped using templates to Vblock resources.
  • We believe that we can do this in evolutionary manner: we can take people from where they are today, in a series of steps to where they really want to be. In fact virtualization is the only way to get there without doing a wholesale rip and replace, and re-writing of applications (which by the way no enterprise can do). We can lay out a roadmap where every step of the way delivers value in of itself while at the same time taking companies where they need to go strategically. Once you have started virtualizing and aggregating everything into a single pool, we will have the opportunity to show people that they can not only operate more efficiently but also operate more flexibly and more reliably. They can start using this shared infrastructure for doing test and dev, for doing better disaster recovery – two datacenters that act as failover for one another, etc. We are going to expand our value proposition from being just a CapEx value prop to being also an OpEx value prop – leading to a better IT and a better way of running applications. As a second step we want to up-level management – get people away from managing underlying infrastructure to managing service levels based on what makes sense for their internal customers – the user of applications. For example, I want to manage factors such as how many seconds page refresh latency am I willing to tolerate, what availability do I need from this application, instead of having to reach somewhere deep down and turn a myriad of arcane knobs. We can also automate a lot of the rote management tasks, extricate IT from the business of repetitive management procedures, and at the same time enable end users to get what they need very quickly. The second step is about implementing automation for central IT and self-service for end-users. And finally, once we have cleaned up the infrastructure, we open up the opportunity to federate with external infrastructures provided by third party providers, blending the two into a single collection of resources that you can use We are building the Private Cloud which allows you to spend most of your time focusing on deploying applications and much less time on dealing with and managing plumbing. Each step on the way can justify itself – that way we can tell customers: you do not need to make some big bet that may or may not pay out eventually. You can get to the future state of the Private Cloud in a series of incremental steps, and each step pays for itself.
