  6. 6. How to use social media to find a job Anna F Söderström www.liu.se/iktstudion 20% Unofficial ways 80%Monday, February 20, 2012Why is it important to know more about the web as a professional tool?Job ads don´t always get posted through the official channels. Only 20% of all job ads where published through paper ads, online ads, at the established forums online.80% of all jobs where posted through informal networks both online and offline, and sometimes in a combination of both. A lot of the recruitment was made through pro-active work, a person showing interest before the company even have posted any ads at all. These numbers are from the Swedish job market 2011.The web as a tool for looking up companies, finding jobs ”hidden” in your social network is getting more and more important.

I am online, I use the social networks, but how can I use it to find a job?Start by analyzing and look at your own digital footprint. Are you easy to find, is the information available correct, how can you change/improve it?Social media is an important part of this.
  8. 8. How to use social media to find a job Anna F Söderström www.liu.se/iktstudionMonday, February 20, 2012My personal digital footprints - a short reflection on what you can find googling my name and what I think about it.- The social media I am using are always ranked higher then for instance my very much static webpage from 1999. The blog, Linkedin-page and other social media tools areoften updated. Dynamic - good!- The page were information about me is published affects how Google rates the information. Information in for instance www.liu.se is ranked high since it´s a well-visitedwebpage with a lot of links/trackbacks, traffic, it´s often up-dated etc.- Media such as pictures and video are also ranked rather high. You can always delete pages, but it might not be totally gone since somewhere there might be a cache copy of the page. Annoying, but it´s part of the web.

  17. 17. How to use social media to find a job Anna F Söderström www.liu.se/iktstudion Use social media to find your professional networkMonday, February 20, 2012Where do you find your professionel network? Where are the people interested in the same things you are?Use the web to look up the networks where you want to belong. Try to find interesting blogs, groups, and also use the web to look up informationabout specific companies you would like to work at. Be pro-active and curious, but be true. A faked interest in something is often rather...easy tosee through by the people online. The Alec Brownstein-example: Alec Brownstein wanted to work at a advertising agency in New York. He bought Google Ad Words with the namesof the people in charge of some of the agencies he wanted to work at. And he got a job! Ian Reichental was one (of many) who googled himself andfound an interesting ad. Some people might get a bit paranoid, Ian found the initative rather creative and hired Alec.
