  • 2. Research Administration provides support for research by:
    • identifying sources of funding for research
    • disseminating funding information
    • advising on the costing and pricing of proposals
    • financial administration of existing research projects
    • putting in place the procedures for recruitment of staff on the project.
    • Managing internal communication as well as external communication
  • 3. EXPLORE FUNDING SOURCES
    • Explore non traditional funding sources - Foundations, Trusts
    • Tap opportunities in the Private sector
    • Target groups of donors rather than individual donors
    • Identify champions within donor agencies and ‘Think tanks’
    • Always maintain a healthy pipeline
  • 4. MANAGE EXISTING FUNDS OPTIMALLY
    • Savings on core grants can be redirected to basic research
    • Prepare Project proposals to include all staff costs where possible
    • Set up a corpus fund from Project funds
    • Closely monitor non-essential spending
    • Outsource to improve effectiveness and cut costs
  • 5. FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT
    • Ensure clear Guidelines on Costing and pricing of proposals
    • Regular monitoring – in-year and year end
    • Ensure Compliance with Donor requirements
    • Timely closeout of expired research projects.
  • 6. RECRUITMENT OF PROJECT STAFF
    • Look at innovative staffing structures for projects
    • Use secondments/ internship from Donors and Universities
    • Adopt shared job appointments
    • Recruit a diverse workforce: identify barriers, and actively encourage through Outreach programmes
  • 7. RETENTION
    • The first few months are crucial !
    • Effective induction – structured orientation, welcome notes, video
    • Set up a buddy system
    • Have an Ongoing Orientation Program
    • State clearly the quality of life expected… and deliver to the standard
  • 8. REWARD AND MOTIVATE STAFF
    • Pay :salary supplements, bonuses
    • provide high quality research infrastructure
    • State terms, conditions and expectations clearly
    • Provide Security of tenure e.g.. bridge funds
    • create opportunities for personal growth and advancement
  • 9. CHALLENGES- EXTERNAL
    • Limited core grant funding
    • More funding for applied Research than for Basic Research
    • Changing Donor priorities
    • Communication with policy makers, donors, partners and general public
  • 10. CHALLENGES- INTERNAL
    • Recruit and retain competent researchers
    • Leadership, management of staff (management skills for Scientists and P.I.s )
    • Communication for interdisciplinary research
    • Acquire Needed Research Space
    • Keep abreast of new technology and new Industry standards
