  • Good morning to all and thank you for attending this final stakeholders meeting.
    I would like to renew our gratitude to Dr. Mahdi El Kaisey and the Ministry of Agriculture for its continuous support throughout the implementation of the project.
    A note of thanks goes to Mrs. Sarah Ann Lynch and USAID that made this project possible with their funds. We are grateful to the USAID team here in Iraq (Jeff Levine, Eric Milstrey, William Sedlak, Mohammad Elwadie, Iman Shayeb and recently also Rebecca Jones) who gave us their technical support during these 20 months of project implementation
  • What were the main objectives of the HSAD project?

  • Her are listed the activities carried out by the project in the main Iraqi regions;

  • COMING TO THE SPECIFIC ACTIVTIES:

    CONCERNING THE IMPROVED WHEAT SEEDS,

    VARIETY EVALUATION TRIALS WERE CARRIED OUT IN ERBIL AND SULEYMANIYEH BOTH ON DURUM AND BREAD WHEAT (THE GENOTYPES WERE PROVIDED BY ICARDA)

    IN ADDITION 40 METRIC TONS OF CERTIFIED SEEDS (ADANA 99) WERE PURCHASED AND SOWN WITH THE OBJECTIVE OF PRODUCING CERTIFIED SEEDS FOR THE NEXT SEASON

    3147 METRIC TONS OF WHEAT SEEDS HAVE BEEN CLEANED AND UPGRADED USING MOBILE SEED CLEANERS THAT WHERE MADE OPERATIONAL BY HSAD.
    THIS ACTIVITY INVOLVED 315 FARMERS OF THE IKR

  • 97 STAFF OF THE MINISTRIES AND 315 FARMERS WERE TRAINED ON THE MANAGEMENT OF MOBILE SEED PROCESSING UNITS

    316 MoA AND MoAWR STAFF WERE TRAINED ON SEED PRODUCTION, CERTIFICATION AND PROCESSING WITH THE TECHNICAL SUPPORT OF HSAD INTERNATIONAL SEED EXPERT (DR. SUSHIL PANDEY)

  • HSAD Water Harvesting

    1. 1. Harmonized Support for Agricultural Development in Iraq (HSAD) Water harvesting, achievements and the way forward in IKR
    2. 2. 2  The rainfall dependent cereal production systems in IKR are strongly affected by total volume and timing of rainfall during winter growing season.  The lack of rainfall at the crucial timing (flowering and grain-fill period) results in low yield.  HSAD’s original target was to apply improved practices of water harvesting and supplemental irrigation. Introduction
    3. 3. 3 Complete studies were carried out for the establishment of two small reservoirs on seasonal streams in relevant areas serving communities that are growing field crops with supplemental irrigation Activities After the cut in May 2013 HSAD’s activities in this sector were re-dimensioned.
    4. 4. 4 • Mountain Range Zorga Zeaw - Erbil Area - 600 m peak - 250-350 mm annual rainfall • Mountain Range Damer Dagh - close to Erbil - 600 m peak - 3000-400 mm annual rainfall Site Selection
    5. 5. 5 • Survey • Feasibility study and design • Geological survey • Particular specifications • Hill lakes and structure drawings • Bill of Quantitities - BOQ Studies conducted
    6. 6. 6 • Tendering process • Construction of the two reservoirs • Irrigation system to community • Using the two sites as pilot models for other areas The way forward
