    Notes on slide 1

We lead the market in almost all of our high value solution areas. The results you see here are full year 2007 results and we expect them to stay essentially the same for full year 2008. According to IDC, for 2007, IBM was #1 in the server market with 31.9% share and was 3.6 pts ahead of #2 HP. We continued to lead in the high end (+$250K) server space ahead of #2 HP. In the UNIX market, IBM also held the leadership position for full year 2007 with 8% revenue growth and finished 3.1 pts ahead of #2 Sun. IBM remained #2 in Blades revenue behind HP. But importantly, our blade share is twice what our share is in the other servers and as the industry move continues from racks to blades, we are going to end with a higher share position. IBM is #1 in overall storage and for 16 consecutive quarters, IBM tape has been ranked #1 in the marketplace by IDC.  In the November 2007 Top500 ranking of supercomputers, IBM outranked its competitors at all performance levels, with a solid lead in the total number of systems – 232 (46 percent) well above HP (with 166 systems); the No. 1 system – Blue Gene/L; and in the most systems in the Top10 (4 top 10 systems) among any vendor. In addition, the group that publishes the Top500 supercomputer list published for the first time the Top500 Green supercomputer list, which is a ranking of supercomputer energy usages. And the top 25 on the list were all IBM systems.

As Every human being, company, organization, city, nation, natural system, and man-made system is becoming interconnected, instrumented, and literally made more intelligent. In this new world, we believe there are 4 questions to be considered: How can we take advantage of the wealth of information available from our new smarter things to make more intelligent choices? – New Intelligence How can we empower people with smart processes and systems so that they can realize their full potential -- Smart Work How should business, government and other institutions adapt to the expectations of its new clients and the ever faster pace of change that it brings? - Dynamic Enterprise How do we align our goals and behaviors with our new responsibilities, so that caring for our planet and its people is no longer perceived as generosity or sacrifice? - Green & Beyond We hope we inspired you. We hope that you will share IBM’s vision of a smart planet and become intrigued by how we are making clients think about how the world works. We hope that forward-thinkers will engage with us about the issues that matter most to them. And that’s the entire point…. starting a conversation to build a smarter planet.

This approach to a dynamic infrastructure addresses today’s challenges and tomorrow’ opportunities. It allows for improved service - Not just high availability and quality of existing services, but also meeting customer expectations for real-time, dynamic access to innovative new services. And reducing cost- Not just containing it, but achieving breakthrough productivity gains through virtualization, optimization, energy stewardship, and flexible sourcing. And finally, not just managing the risk requirements that we are facing today, with security, resiliency and compliance challenges, but getting in front of new risks that may come with a more connected and collaborative world. Transition Line: We are working with many clients today who are making paradigm shifts in how they are addressing these areas.

System x IBM System x is a portfolio of robust servers built on IBM X-Architecture® – our blueprint for bringing innovation to x86 systems. Our System x servers scale up from uni-socket servers and out to the massive scale-out processing power of our iDataPlex. Some server vendors view uni- and two-socket servers as commodities, using off-the-shelf components to produce cookie-cutter servers with no added value. Instead, IBM X-Architecture system design begins with standard parts and adds innovation to create something more practical: outstanding dual- and quad-core performance, high availability, scalability, power efficiency and proactive manageability. Our four- through 16-way System x enterprise servers are the ideal platform for today’s business-critical applications — like database processing, customer relationship management and enterprise resource planning — and highly consolidated, virtual server environments. With multiple workloads running on the same server, performance remains important but reliability and availability become more critical than ever. IBM System x enterprise servers are built with eX4 technology, which include a unique chipset and other advanced capabilities that give you higher throughput, exceptional reliability and the ideal platform for virtualization. By integrating servers, storage and networking, IBM BladeCenter is helping companies in every industry sweep complexity aside. The blades contain all the necessities to run an application — processors, memory, I/O and storage. The chassis contains shared redundant power, shared hot-swap cooling, DVD, integrated Ethernet, storage, switching and consolidated powerful management. Its innovative, open design offers a true alternative to today’s sprawling racks and overheated server rooms. And our iDataPlex introduces a new category for Internet-style computing and is designed to help your business: Use less space by doubling the number of servers you can run in a single rack. Use less power AND gain computing density. iDataPlex uses up to 40% less energy while increasing data center computing power five times. Use less air conditioning. Reduce your energy costs with an optional liquid-cooled IBM Rear Door Heat eXchanger for iDataPlex, which allows the solution to run at “room temperature.” With a just a few adjustments, the liquid cooling feature can actually cool the ambient air. Power Power Systems is the number #1 platform in the industry for running UNIX, Linux or i applications. In only 6 years - from 2002 to today - we have grown our worldwide UNIX revenue share a remarkable 15 points, to over 37% by the end of 2008, according to IDC. We did this by providing leadership performance and scalability along with a technology roadmap to future generations. This ability to count on Power innovation, not only in the POWER processor, but in what we call the 'plus' - our Power Systems Software -- has fueled the steady upgrade of technology by long-time clients and the growing numbers of new clients migrating to Power from competitive platforms in order to improve service, reduce cost and manage risk. High Performing/Scalable/Modular: With the ability to handle over 6 million transactions per minute on a single system, Power delivers the highest performing processors and system scalability today. And, our popular modular flexibility and Capacity on Demand features allow clients to seamlessly grow their workloads without disruption. Virtualization: IBM's unique 40-year history in virtualization comes to our clients through PowerVM technologies that, along with our system performance, enable clients to dramatically reduce associated systems administration costs when consolidating 15, 20 or even 60 competitive UNIX servers onto a one or two Power servers -- with many getting 60-80% utilization. Today 65% of Power systems with the POWER6 processor ship with PowerVM – a three times greater percentage than with the previous POWER5 generation. Energy Efficiency: Today Power clients can realize significant reductions in energy costs not only though the consolidation and virtualization of many single application servers onto a few Power systems, but by the fact that we deliver more performance per watt than competitive platforms. These key features enable clients to migrate from competitive systems and reduce energy costs from 70 to 90%. And, Active Energy Manager in IBM Systems Director provides unique abilities to manage energy costs to new levels of granularity. Business Resiliency: Power hardware and systems software offer a roadmap to continuous availability. In addition to PowerHA offerings for high availability in the event of unplanned downtime, Power systems are supported by capabilities like concurrent maintenance and PowerVM Live Partition Mobility which reducing the need for planned downtime. Capacity Upgrade on Demand enables clients to scale quickly and without disruption. Management: New management capabilities for Power systems keep pace with virtualized environments. IBM Systems Director supports the faster deployment of new services and enables users to rapidly adjust to unexpected peaks in user demand, as well as shift workloads to more efficiently leverage IT resources. With AIX Enterprise Edition – a offering partnership with IBM Tivoli Software – clients can more effectively tie systems management with business service and application management. Since 2006, 1576 accounts have migrated to Power, as of 1Q 2009 1640 Of the 1576 accounts, 89% or 1396 (729 Sun + 667 HP) have migrated from Sun and HP System z Last year we introduced our next generation mainframe, the System z10 . The new z10 represents decades of IBM innovation and collaboration with our most advanced clients. It is our most powerful System z yet, fast, secure and green. It is now the most powerful tool available to our clients to help reduce cost and complexity in their data centers. The z10 delivers up to 100 percent more performance, up to 100 percent utilization, and potential cost savings of 80 percent or more versus competitive IT environments. We calculate that a fully loaded z10 has the equivalent capacity of nearly 1,500 x86 cores – each one requiring: its own software license; its own power; cabling over ten miles long; and administrative support. The mainframe’s unique virtualization environment with dynamic policy-based management and “Just-in-Time” capacity continues to set the standard for the industry. We believe t he resurgence of our System z mainframes is a response to these trends we’re seeing in the IT market… Our clients are seeing the benefits of the mainframe, particularly in the area of virtualization and server consolidation. And that fact that there are far fewer network switches and routers needed for a System z is a big selling point these days too. In 2007, the mainframe install base inventory was close to 12 million MIPS . In fact, there’s close to three times as much mainframe capacity in use in our clients’ environments today than there was in 2000. And a recent study we conducted with the help of McKinsey showed that 85% of mainframe clients are growing their workloads. Opening the mainframe was a fundamental shift, now some 60% of our mainframe revenue is driven by new open workloads . Today’s enterprise class mainframe, the z10, has 238% more total capacity than our older generation mainframe, the z990; the z10 cores deliver up to 104% more performance than z990 cores; the z10 delivers 85% more Capacity per Kilowatt than a z990; and the z10 is 85% more energy efficient than a z990.

System Storage IBM brings together a breadth of Information Infrastructure capability to address our client’s information management needs, providing a foundation for firms of any size to efficiently and effectively manage information so they can unlock its business value, create new insights and confidently take action. Our leadership disk and tape offerings allow businesses to efficiently store, archive and protect information, make information accessible and available to the business where and when its needed while supporting business compliance, energy policies and audit requirements. Retail store solutions In a smarter world retailers need to be inter-connected so they can be fed by customer insight at every point in the process. They need to be instrumented, so every item of inventory can be tracked and accounted for; to be intelligent, so vast amounts of customer data can be analyzed and turned into real value in real time. IBM provides retail store solutions – including point-of-sale (IBM SurePOS family) and self service solutions (AnyPlace Kiosk family and IBM Self Checkout), POS software, retail systems management, and retail service and support from IBM and the world’s largest retail business partner organization -- that can help retailers meet higher service expectations, rising cost pressures, and new risks and threats. For example: IBM SurePOS 300, a point-of-sale (POS) solution designed for retail environments where budgets and counter space are limited, delivers industry-leading “green” technology--including deep sleep and IBM Remote Management Agent -- that provides exceptional energy and cost savings while improving business and IT operational efficiency. Deep sleep, introduced with the launch of the IBM SurePOS 300 is a low-power mode for a point-of-sale system that conserves almost as much energy when a POS is idle as the off state. The IBM SurePOS 300 with deep sleep gives retailers an energy-saving alternative to shutting down POS systems which reduces costs, improves service and manages risks . IBM 4690 is one of the premier retail point-of-sale (POS) platforms in the retail industry, approaching one million installations worldwide. The rock solid platform enables unique systems management to optimize store IT assets and drive lower costs. IBM Remote Management Agent enables retail clients to lower total cost of ownership by improving the efficiency of systems, support, and application deployment in their stores. IBM is a league of its own when it comes to innovating across the spectrum. It is this technology innovation and expertise, throughout the ‘stack’ – from material sciences, packaging, processors, servers, storage, operating systems, applications, and the entire infrastructure – that provides your IT staff with a rich, flexible array of leading-edge capabilities that can be used to enable business functions that would not be possible otherwise. These technology advancements help you enable “innovation that matters” in your business. By this we mean, not just innovation for innovation’s sake, but the achievement of incremental, and sometimes breakthrough, business advantage enabled by your strategic use of IT as a competitive differentiator. At the R&D layer : For the last four decades, IBM has been one of the world’s leading “chip foundries” with an unrivaled investment in R&D. As an example, back in 1999, we started the Cell project with Sony and Toshiba. Sony had a set of requirements for their PlayStation3 to do "something that has never been done before”. Together, we did that. Cell is 40 times faster than the chip that runs the PlayStation 2. Toshiba is working on a Cell TV that allows viewers to change channels with hand gestures or voice commands. Today we are seeing the Cell technology morph into specialty engines in our System z and BladeCenter. At the systems layer : These technologies are the basis for our product families. Systems innovation – technology – will always be the cornerstone of IBM’s strategy. The mainframe exemplifies this innovation. We continue to innovate the mainframe and drive new workloads to the mainframe that matter to our clients. We’re taking these concepts to our other systems platforms, incorporating mainframe-inspired technologies even in our uni processor servers. Also, we are sharing technology in ways that benefit you, across all of our systems so we can continue to offer the broadest range of servers and storage solutions in the industry- with the best performance, scalability, security and reliability. For example, you may or may not know is that “all Intel servers are not equal”. IBM has cascaded mainframe-inspired technology into the X-Architecture used in our System x servers. This technology adds additional systems mgmt, availability, security and other capabilities on top of the base function delivered by the chips themselves. At the infrastructure and management layer: Solutions across the infrastructure are the result of these continued advancements. These technologies you see here enable you to build an infrastructure that delivers the ability to innovate. They help provide the efficiency needed to be more productive, and the privacy and security required to stay up and running 24x7. They enable the innovations that matter to our clients, SOA, ILM and energy efficiency for example, and ultimately the business breakthroughs that a true commitment to innovation can help bring about. As I mentioned, earlier this year we introduced our next generation mainframe, the System z10 – our first new mainframe since 2005. I know that the majority of the mainframes you have in your data centers are an older generation – the z990. Today’s enterprise class mainframe, the z10, has 238% more total capacity than a z990; the z10 cores deliver up to 104% more performance than z990 cores; the z10 delivers 85% more Capacity per Kilowatt than a z990; and the z10 is 85% more energy efficient than a z990.

In 2008 after 1.5 B$ of investment over 5 years we launched the System z10 in to the market place. 2+ years after announcing its predecessor the z9. System z has a long but predictable product cycle. Their introduction are anticipated and well received with the a large portion of initial sales coming from the introduction of new technologies and further cost saving Following this technology refresh of up to 6 months, sales become driven by organic growth and deployments of new workload which last for roughly another 18-24 mos until the new cycle begins. During the 2+ yr cycle we typically offer new capabilities or performance improvements to keep the drumbeat rolling and to demonstrate this is a platform we are continuing to invest in. 2Q 2009 represents the transition in the cycle from new technology adoption to growth and new workload deployments. So again it is imperative to demonstrate our relevance by: 1.) introducing new solutions 2.) introducing new capabilities in our HW and SW 3.) But also by paving the way for our future generations With this cycle however things are different. As System z begins to pave the way for our next generation Server we are preparing for a Game Changer, It is a new hybrid computing model that will connect the best STG server technologies together, under the centralized, robust management of System z. Not only will there be the ability to manage end to end applications across connected heterogeneous environments but do so with the traditional Mainframe qualities of service being extended out across the hybrid environment. Abilities fully aligned with and central to the Dynamic infrastructure So it is important as we go into this transition and April launch that we not only talk about what new now for z but pave the way for what is coming down that path, and not let this powerful vision for the future get lost, but built on. As part of April’s launch we not only need to communicate new solutions, features and function, that we will talk about on the next slide, but we also need use this as the perfect opportunity to build momentum for System z and its cornerstone role in the DI. We need position ourselves in the market with technology roadmaps and client facing collateral to build a vision. So later in 4Q2009 when we introduce Network Attached workload accelerators for BI or DWAs. They will see this clearly as the first steps. So we don’t want to stumble in the 4Q but assure the market is ready for Systems z’s role in DI. This April Launch becomes pivotal to keep the vision building.

Information Infrastructure is the Foundation of a Dynamic Infrastructure . Today, information has become the lifeline for business sustainability and competitive advantage. Firms of all size are searching for practical ways to create business value – to get their arms around information, correlate insights and to confidently predict outcomes and take action. For CIOs, the information era poses unique challenges: how to cost-effectively store, archive and retrieve a virtual explosion of new information, how to protect and secure that information, meet compliance requirements and make it accessible for business insight, where and when its needed. Without a dynamic information infrastructure, organizations will find themselves facing higher operational costs and greater exposure to business risks. To help our clients, IBM is addressing these challenges with Information Infrastructure solutions for efficiently managing information growth, supporting compliance, reducing storage and archiving costs and enabling continuous access to information in support business requirements. 4 Key Areas of Concern for Companies - and IBM's Response In response to these problems, we're outlining three critical elements for the new information infrastructure that focus on the management, consolidation and security pain-points for clients in four areas: Compliance, Availability, Retention and Security Compliance The compliance burden will only continue to grow as you provide more Web-based services to a diverse set of users, including employees, customers and business partners. The reputational damage that comes with the forced publicity of non-compliance has created the most powerful incentives for stronger information security and compliance. “Stay off the front page of the newspaper” is a common mantra for IT Of course, when security processes, auditing and reporting are improved in an organization, those improvements can be mapped to many different regulations . The one area that we are finding with Compliance, is that not only are the fines, punitive damages, sanctions etc a problem, but large companies are now expressing a pain around the ridiculously high cost of compliance. They know they have to deal with eDiscovery and are dealing with it, but per Gartner most Fortune 1000 companies have 86 cases at any one time and are spending on avg 1.5M$ per case, and they are spending that over and over again for each case. Availability Today's infrastructure is not designed to efficiently manage the estimated two BILLION people who will be on the Web by 2011 – especially considering that users today are already uploading more than 10 hours of video to YouTube every minute. Cost effective, scale up technologies are needed to enable Internet scale and speed for the management of vast amounts of online information – coupled with continuous access. Businesses must be prepared for this new phase of “cloud computing,” giving consumers access to data and systems remotely, from any device, anywhere. Retention -- Today's information infrastructure suffers from massive inefficiency in both duplicate sources of the same information and excessive energy costs. Analysts have stated that 50 percent of data centers will run out of power or space for their data centers sometime THIS YEAR. So you would need retention systems that would eliminate duplicate data, coupled with green, cost-efficient archival solutions for long-term retention. On ave, companies need to keep content for 7 years, and more for some industries. In healthcare, this is 50+ years and the content is increasing exponentially in HCLS. Clients also want to keep and preserve certain information for cultural heritage reasons. How do you accomplish this with product in every 3-5 years. How do you future proof your information? How do you optimize your infrastructure for retention? Security - Ensuring that the information in a data center is secure and being accessed by those authorized has become a top concern for all data centers – large and small. A recent data center hack cost one company more than $60 million dollars in damages through stealing of data and unauthorized use of credit card information of consumers.

We have industry-leading storage solutions from tape through enterprise disk. There are currently close to 10,000 IBM storage virtualization engines running in 3,300 of our clients’ systems around the world. These virtualization offerings are a great example of how we help clients simplify their infrastructure. Storage complexity is a staggering issue – 80% of the storage costs are now management, with just 20% hardware acquisition. A major portion of that is driven by the need to better secure and protect business information … which is now even more critical than before … to stay competitive and to respond quickly to changes in the marketplace. Our storage virtualization offerings increase availability, performance and security. And they can manage competitive systems from EMC, Hitachi, HP and the like, so we can de-couple the hold our competitors have on their clients. An important recent addition to our storage portfolio is XIV . We announced this acquisition in January. The IBM XIV® Storage System is a next-generation high-end open disk storage system. Part of IBM’s broad spectrum of system storage and SAN offerings, the XIV Storage System is an innovative, enterprise disk system based on a grid of standard, off-the-shelf hardware components.

For two decades, systems innovation was driven by Moore’s law. Pretty much a single focus on processor performance delivered by frequency improvements. However, IT Datacenters continued to face fundamental challenges driven by the increased cost due to complexity and energy consumption. This continued to drive the need for new levels of simplification and management. Recognizing this inflection point in 2000, IBM changed the game because we had a vision of balanced systems performance and the innovations were much more about systems capabilities being integrated on the chip. This was the dawn of multi-core processors, and with virtualization technologies, allows simplification and a better cost savings model by consolidating many smaller systems onto larger systems. The physical consolidation and optimization of servers, storage and networks using virtualization capabilities is beginning to deliver new economics. We are now faced with yet another inflection point and IBM will lead the movement to hybrid systems that are “fit for purpose.” A new class of requirements are driving us to design systems differently. We will enable this new computing model with advanced virtualization and policy-based management. This new level of efficiency will enable emerging workloads to be consolidated with traditional workloads on the same systems. Our Fit for Purpose hybrid systems can be characterized as a dynamic infrastructure that is a highly virtualized IT environment and the system is tuned for the application workload.

A smarter planet will generate vast amounts of data that will be disseminated at networking speeds. These emerging class of applications will require real-time data analysis with improved performance, scaling and efficiency. They will drive new technologies into the underlying infrastructure. In the area of Performance Accelerators: We will extend the use of accelerators across our systems. Multi-thread chips: We will enable concurrent processing of high volumes of concurrent work streams such as processing information from many simultaneous internet users, or from sensor-based inputs, including video and audio inputs. In the area of Scaling Modularity: We will provide scalable systems able to dynamically scale real time with sustained performance to handle changing load requirements. Scale-out storage: We will provide petabyte levels of storage scaling for massive amounts of both structured and unstructured data associated with smarter planet workloads. This data is often unstructured – it includes things like e-mail, video streams, medical images – versus the traditional forms of structured data associated with business databases. In the area of Efficiency : Energy Management: We will extend the Active Energy Management component of IBM Systems Director, to dynamically move workloads to optimize energy utilization – for example, moving work to cooler parts of the system to reduce cooling requirements. Advanced Virtualization: We will provide unified platform management that spans heterogeneous system environments and enable comprehensive sharing and dynamic placement of resources. Ensemble Manager: IBM’s Ensemble Manager for Cloud Computing will enable entire pools of resources to be managed as though they were a single system. Ensemble Manger will enable improved levels of asset utilization, allowing server, storage, and network resources to be more freely shared across systems. Ensemble Manager will also reduce operational cost, as the level of management complexity is reduced.

We will continue to invest at all levels of the system stack for margin expansion that supports our long-term PTI model – from process technology and packaging, chip design and hardware development, to system software and solutions integration. There are some trends on which we expect to focus our technology innovations for continued systems leadership. Clouds will help improve Datacenter efficiency. This will reduce the complexity by integrating scalable pools of resources to be managed as a single system with advanced virtualization and management. System Management will allow better asset utilization. Systems Management will allow better asset utilization through advanced virtualization and will allow simplification through unified management of systems, storage and networking. Hybrid Systems will enhance emerging workload consolidation. These workload balanced systems will enable consolidation for both traditional and emerging application workloads. Flash will increase system performance and efficiency. This may be one of the most significant advances for computers in the last decade. It will enable new ways to store and retrieve data more intelligently, enabling new levels of performance and energy efficiency. 10G Ethernet will enable network fabric convergence. The use of separate networking, LAN for servers and SAN for storage, will come together onto the same network, enabling significant cost advantages. Multi-core Processors will change hardware system design. This will allow more and different types of system level integration. 3D Integration will revolutionize chip packaging. This enables stacking of semiconductor devices, allowing more chip level integration. Computational Lithography will extend CMOS density scaling. Computational techniques will be used over today’s optical lithography allowing the printing of smaller circuits.

IBM is the leader in middleware and each of our software business units rank first or second in terms of market share in their markets driven by our investment in key high growth product segments.

IBM Lotus Notes and Domino are the quality standard for email, calendaring and collaborative applications. With over 125 million licenses sold, Notes is a leading global IT platform. It serves as the integrated messaging and calendar application for tens of thousands of customers, but deliver far “more than mail” capabilities for many customers, including advanced team collaboration and activities management, and a large library of collaborative applications. With almost two decades in market, Domino and Notes have proven their strengths in enterprise scaling and security. At the same time, Domino has embraced and integrated all of the major programming methods and standards that have been introduced. With rich support for Java, .net, Web services and other Internet technologies, Domino is a first-class participant in the IBM middleware family. Next up: improvements to the Notes client that introduce matched capabilities at the desktop. Lotus and IBM desktop products are being updated to exploit the latest user experience technology. Major products such as Notes 8 and Sametime are built atop the Eclipse rich client platform (RCP) – or specifically the version of Eclipse RCP that IBM has extended with enterprise-grade management, security and programmability features and markets as IBM Lotus Expeditor. The next-generation common platform is a server managed client with integrated real-time communications.

The IBM Lotus Editors are a set of full-function word processor, presentation manager, and spreadsheet editor capabilities. They are included at no charge with Notes 8. You can open attachments in context within the “Hannover” client. Supports Microsoft Office and open-standard ODF file formats from OpenOffice.org, Google etc. plus SmartSuite (read-only). Exports content directly to Adobe Acrobat. Like other client platform offerings, Lotus editors are designed to be centrally provisioned, managed and updated.

IBM Lotus® Sametime® 7.5, IBM's award-winning and market-leading platform for real-time collaboration, offers integrated instant messaging and Web conferencing capabilities with the security features required for business use. Lotus Sametime 7.5 includes over 150 new features, including rich text, chat histories, integrated voice over IP (VoIP), managed interoperability with public IM networks, and new options for telephony and video integration. Lotus Sametime 7.5: Provides you with easy-to-use, intuitive technology that gives you a rapid way to resolve problems and settle questions through clear, high quality communications. Allows you to access global teams dynamically. Provides a cost-effective, consistent approach to real-time collaboration within an encrypted, authenticated, managed environment. Offers integration with Microsoft® Office and Outlook applications. Includes a mobile client that can be deployed on multiple mobile platforms and devices. Respond immediately - React faster - Reduce expenses Helps improve productivity by virtually bringing together geographically dispersed individuals and teams Can extend security-rich, real-time collaboration to your extended value chain Helps enable faster, more informed decision-making by bringing experts together – spontaneously or in a structured fashion Can reduce total cost of ownership (TCO) by providing a set of real-time capabilities in a single product offering – and by providing flexible integration with existing infrastructures and Web applications Provides the ability to inject presence awareness and instant messaging into other applications, including Web pages and Microsoft Windows applications Can reduce need for travel to business meetings, helping deliver a fast measurable return on investment (ROI) Real-Time Platform Sametime uses the same technologies in use across the IBM product portfolio, and that support all major standards for security, interoperability, and programmability. This creates very high extensibility as a platform for real-time (synchronous) collaboration and applications. Notes 8 and Lotus Expeditor are great examples of applications built to take advantage of the Sametime platform; business partners and ISVs are able to apply this functionality against any application construct.

Additional information and background: Portal Application Templates. Allows business analysts to assemble and update composite applications to meet the needs of diverse users. Can be used to modify components of an application, set access rights based on users’ roles and manage workflow processes. WebSphere Portlet Factory enables authorized "power users" to quickly modify portlets without involving IT staff. You can use WebSphere Portlet Factory to create powerful composite applications which can be rolled out as templates, enabling "power users" who have direct knowledge of changing business requirements to update the applications directly and as needed. The new workflow builder is designed to help keep workflow tasks from getting lost in crowded in-boxes. The workflow builder allows business process owners to create and modify departmental workflows while drawing information from across the organization as part of self-service applications. Once a task is complete, the subsequent task is delivered to the appropriate person in the workflow. WebSphere Portal’s integration with Workplace Forms enables users to view, fill in, sign, submit and route forms electronically. This tracks accountability, accelerates transactions and minimizes errors. Improvements in the content authoring provided IBM Workplace Web Content Management in WebSphere Portal lowers the cost/resources needed to deploy and maintain portal sites. New features help improve the effectiveness of IT managers and their staff., enabling them to be more responsive and deliver powerful capabilities described above with fewer resources. Improvements such as policy-based administration, flexible configuration, and industry leading performance help IT managers deliver a reliable portal experience that has been proven by some of the top global corporations. And just of Portlet Factory: With Version 6, IBM has expanded IBM WebSphere Portlet Factory with additional automated portlet development capabilities to further help customers achieve even faster time-to-value, more efficiently, for their WebSphere Portal applications - including the delivery of reusable business services for SOA-based portlets and applications. SOA Automation: New Data Services builders provide an entry point to SOA for organizations not yet embracing SOA, or to help further it in those organizations that are on an SOA path, by automating the creation, consumption and deployment of reusable back-end application services from existing applications and data. AJAX Support: New AJAX builders allow the portal developer to enhance the user experience by increasing portlet interactivity, speed, and richness. Portlets can execute independently of other portlets, thereby eliminating entire portal interface refreshes, and deliver rich client-like features like type-ahead capability to deliver a more sophisticated user experience in WebSphere Portal. Expanded Automated Portlet Development Features: In addition to the new automated SOA and AJAX capabilities, and joining WebSphere Portlet Factory's palette of over 170 builders for automated portlet development, Version 6 of WebSphere Portlet Factory has been expanded with additional automated portlet development functions. New builders for Page Tabs creation, Breadcrumb navigation, Column Layout, Cooperative Portlet and Edit Defaults builders automate these desirable and frequently requested portlet features for portlet developers - helping ensure developers can deliver all these, plus other, portlet requirements to meet the exacting and changing needs of the enterprise. Developer Success Enhancements: Focused on improved developer proficiency and productivity, WebSphere Portlet Factory Version 6.0 features new "getting started" enhancements, including new wizards, tutorial and examples to help developers realize success with WebSphere Portlet Factory faster - which further helps accelerate WebSphere Portal deployments.

There’s also a strong server-side integration story, as Lotus Connections components play well in Web portals (as well as other Web applications). In many applications, IBM clients can actually take the portal offline, using the same portlets and code as the central Portal deployment. There’s really nowhere in the SOA stack where Lotus Connections cannot play well or integrate easily.

Chart 9 shows a chart which many of you have probably seen before. It’s kind of the connectivity spaghetti chart which shows all kinds of applications connected together. And this is really a chart which resonates well with a lot of customers because everybody seems to relate to the problem. The issue is that people have a lot of IT that has become very complex. It’s grown overtime, things have layered one thing over another and they have all kinds of applications that connect in and is very inflexible. And this inflexibility hurts them. It prevents them from rolling out new projects. It means that there is a high cost of application maintenance whenever they want to make any kind of changes. So this is really at the core of the problem that we want to try to solve with the connectivity offerings.

So, let's look at chart 13. You'd see that the applications server is a foundation for WebSphere or internet applications, and it's called WebSphere applications server. We have, in the blue circle, the IBM-provided code, where we charge per licenses. So, they have a one-time charge entitlement to the WebSphere applications server. And then, we have this new applications server that is a different set of code. It's built on the Apache Geronimo open-source project and that's called WAS community edition. And, the reason that's white and the other ones are blue is because it is a different sets of source codes. Now, in the community edition, you have the source codes. You can have the source codes. You can change it all you want, you know. It is open-source. Now what if you wrote and tested on community edition and you wanted to migrate to the other products? Well, IBM is the only vendor on the planet earth, again, that is embracing open-source alternative for our customers. The right fit applications server -- open-source makes sense here -- and then deployment to production quality. It is service-hardened. Since 1998, it's been out there. Has tons of quality of the services. We can solve network deployment. Eighty-eight percent of the revenue comes from our network deployment configuration. That's a failover scalability, reliability -- all the ((inaudible)). So, how can you migrate them? IBM is embracing with tools and migration aids to allow our customers to migrate, when it makes sense, into the IBM runtime called WebSphere applications server. So, there is not another competitor -- not Sun, not Oracle, not BEA -- that is embracing open-source and vendor-provided high quality of the services infrastructure solutions from a single vendor. And so, you -- another reason why your solution is so powerful.

Chart number 17, or chart number 16 I should say, shows you the value. The value here is that the ESB decouples connectivity logic from application to process logic so you have an uncluttered environment. And it means that you can reuse these things both in business processes and applications. And as a result you can be much more effective in your role of IT.

And on slide seven what we have learned is that SOA is evolving into what we’re terming smart SOA. And the key point here is SOA is not a specific architecture, it’s not a specific technical environment, rather SOA is an approach. And what we have learned most importantly from our customers is that SOA needs to evolve. The way in which you start SOA today needs to evolve with your business as your business evolves. And a well architected, well reasoned SOA approach can absolutely accommodate that. It will allow you to start simply, to learn, to prove the investment to pick those early wins. But it also helps you to support the business as the applications, as your needs become far more complex. If we look practically at how to sell this to customers, one of the most important pieces in here is to contain the risk and investment. And that’s where smart SOA really shines. Because it allows our customers to start very simply, as simple as they need to start, yet they will be able to leverage that entire early investment as they take on ever more complex systems and applications. That’s how we sell this to customers. Don’t scare the customer. They need to understand that they can start very simply and grow as complex as they need to.

In order to stay in that leadership position, within IBM we are also making build vs. buy decisions. Developing technologies within each brand and supplementing that development with acquisitions. This allows us to fill gaps in our existing technology, round out key aspects of our portfolio and quickly move into new markets to further differentiate ourselves from the competition. They all fit within our infrastructure strategy. We buy companies not only for the revenue they deliver; but to drive their value and intellectual capital across IBM and integrate their capabilities into our go-to-market strategy. In addition to focusing on high-value business, IBM makes a concerted effort to acquire companies with whom we have a strong history or partnership, to ensure a faster, successful integration.   The industry has seen many failed attempts to bring two companies together. One reason we're successful is because we find companies with whom we already have existing marketing, sales and development agreements, similar cultures and joint customers.

M/A Design Group (M/A Design) specializes in interior design for skyscrapers, servicing a customer base of large corporations. The company relies heavily on technology to create and deliver its interior designs and to complete its projects. With its staff focused squarely on design and delivery, M/A Design has neither the time nor the desire to manage a complex IT infrastructure. As M/A Design grew past the capabilities of its Microsoft® Windows® Server 2003 platform, it began to experience system lag, unreliable file management and inconsistent (or nonexistent) e-mail delivery that hurt the firm’s productivity and frustrated its customers. In the system’s worst moment, a total crash took 20 hours to restore, costing the firm US$150,000 in lost AutoCAD files. The company wanted an automated solution that would secure and back up its business-critical information, make it easier to share files via FTP or e-mail, and integrate easily with limited IT management requirements. M/A Design chose the IBM Lotus® Foundations Start (formerly Nitix Blue) software appliance. Running on the open-source Linux® operating system, the software appliance integrates with the company’s existing IT investments to achieve automated, hourly backup, fast system recovery and highly available operations. Designers can open AutoCAD files within 5 to 7 seconds, much faster than their previous wait time of 15 to 20 seconds. With the built-in IBM Lotus Notes® and Lotus Domino® platform, the new solution enables M/A Design to e-mail large files to clients with ease and on time. With the solution from IBM, M/A Design can now automate system backups and restore files with little or no IT support. The solution has helped the company increase system availability and designer productivity, and the company saves money by leveraging its existing IT investments. Finally, M/A Design has improved customer satisfaction levels with reliable file delivery.

IBM Tivoli Foundations Application Manager (SPEAKER NOTES) Tivoli Foundations Application Manager is best thought of as "Application Management" in a box. It is an all-in-one turn-key package with key functionality a mid-market customer needs to implement application management in their environment including IT asset discovery, network monitoring, server monitoring, and monitoring for key IT elements such as databases, mail servers, and virtual servers. Reducing time spent in problem determination, decreases the costs associated with your IT infrastructure and allows you to spend more time focusing on your business and less on the IT that is supporting it. The visibility, control, and automation possible with the Tivoli Foundations Application Manager is perfect for small and mid sized clients looking to reduce costs, manage risks, and improve their service quality.

Poor visibility of IT environment. Monitoring the performance and utilization of systems and servers is usually done by checking machine by machine which is time consuming and costly Over-utilization can be an issue because availability and performance are not tracked effectively thus affecting service quality A combination of open source and in-house code are often used to monitor systems performance. Configuration and integration often takes more time when new machines are introduced and/or replaced.

Eweek, MSPs - It’s all about the Business Model, 24 sept. 08
» Source : IPED, “Sell-to” Managed Services Project , octobre 2007

        • Inset is a small, venture-backed start up with only 16 employees Only 5 people are based in the same office in NJ, our field staff and investigators are spread across the US and our manufacturing is done outside Boston. With the bulk of people working in the field around the US, they needed an easy, web-based way to share information and collaborate on a whole host of office documents.
        • Needed centralized, web-based productivity tools
        • Clinical field staff were struggling to access the internal shared drive via VPN – in fact, most days they were unable to access it.
Building our infrastructure in the cloud made complete sense. LotusLive had the answers they needed – easy online meetings, simple document upload and collaboration as well as sharing contacts
      • LotusLive gave us….
      • … robust web meetings, contact sharing, file collaboration and chat configuration and deployment challenges.
        • … .an easy intuitive web 2.0 interface that was simple enough for field folks with limited computer training to adopt and the multiple training modules help them to answer their own questions
        • … ..the ability to share contacts and notes about contacts as they are so spread without any extraneous elements or extensive out and often speak with the same people.
Maureen Shaffer Vice President of Marketing
      • They had a very virtual group – of about 250 people worldwide and we needed:
        • A way to facilitate, be efficient and on time with decision making
        • A way to keep everyone in the loop
        • Know who is working on which projects
        • An application that would allow us to centralize all material
        • We expected we would need to build a custom solution – we didn’t think something existed that would house all the apps we needed
LotusLive allowed them to… ….focus on entrepreneurship, innovation, breaking the mold – cutting edge – excellence … .give their virtual group an identity – it’s where where they go to work every day. LotusLive is convenient – and easy to use. … to have a single place to got to and didn’t need to cobble solutions together – pulling from various sites – to get the tools they needed. Darian Hendricks President & Executive Director What you’ve done with LotusLive is exactly in the same mindset of what are trying to do with RRTN. It’s an innovative platform – and as an early adopter – we were able to demonstrate our innovativeness as well. We have big plans for our use with LotusLive:
