  • 1.                              New  elective  postgraduate  subject                           eHealth  &  Biomedical  Informatics  Systems  –  ISYS90069    Subject  overview:    This  subject  introduces  current  approaches  and  future  directions  in  eHealth  and  the  use  of  ICT  in  healthcare  generally  as  well  as  key  concepts  and  themes  from  the  underlying  discipline  of  Health  and  Biomedical  Informatics  (HBI).  Topics  covered  in  lectures  and  tutorials  include  electronic  health  records  (EHRs),  health  portals,  health  2.0,  medical  terminology  and  classification  systems,  hospital  and  clinical  decision  support  systems,  broadband  and  tele-­‐health,  informatics  in  translational  and  personalized  medicine,  consumer  and  population  health  informatics,  health  data  analysis,  privacy  and  security  standards,  eHealth  research  and  development.  Informatics  foundation  knowledge  in  biomedicine  and  in  computing  and  information  science  are  also  covered  through  self-­‐paced  instruction  that  is  tailored  to  individual  students’  prior  knowledge.    Subject  objectives:    Upon  completion  of  the  subject,  students  should  be  able  to:  *  Critically  reflect  and  report  on  contemporary  approaches  to  eHealth  in  Australia  &  internationally  *  Use  established  frameworks  to  evaluate  the  use  of  new/emerging  applications  of  information  technology  in  healthcare  &  biomedical  research  *  Synthesise  complex  scientific,  technical  &  social  factors  in  health  &  biomedical  informatics  projects  and  explain  challenges  to  a  variety  of  audiences  *  Apply  recognised  health  &  biomedical  informatics  competency  frameworks  to  assess  individual  and  organisational  development  needs    Subject  assessment:  Test  of  informatics  foundations  knowledge  (30%);  Critical  appraisal  of  assigned  reading  (2000  words)  and  15  minute  presentation  (30%);  Project  report  of  2000  words  and  15  minute  presentation  (40%)and  definitions.    Major  topics  covered:  Biomedicine,  computing  and  information  science  foundations  of  HBI  Particle  to  population  view  of  HBI  Patient  to  policy-­‐maker  view  of  HBI  Competencies  and  careers  view  of  HBI  Research  methods  in  HBI    Enrolment  and  further  information  Current  students  please  enrol  through  regular  enrolment  channels.  External  students  please  enrol  through  the  Community  Access  Program  http://www.unimelb.edu.au/community/access/application-­‐process.html    For  more  information  please  contact  the  subject  coordinator  Kathleen  Gray  kgray@unimelb.edu.au
