CS2.6 SCHOOL LIBRARIANSHIP IN BRAZIL: REALITY AND PERSPECTIVES: Presentation by the recipient of the Da Vinci Huis - IASL Fund - Brazil - Lilia Virginia Martins Santos, Brazil This session will present the reality of school libraries in Brazil. It will discuss some aspects of its educational system and the government goal to provide good quality public education for all Brazilian children and adolescents. It will show the perspectives brought about by a new Federal law recently approved requiring local governments to open and support libraries in every public school. The hope is for the recognition of the important role librarians play and to strengthen school librarianship in Brazil. It will also present the fourteen-year experience of positive results of the School Library Network of the Municipal Department of Education in the city of Belo Horizonte, that counts with 183 libraries attending more than 200.000 users.

Librarianship is a structured profession BUT We don’t have enough professionals in all libraries.

THE REGIONAL COUNCILS ON LIBRARIANSHIP inspect the libraries which there are no librarians working and demand that such professionals be hired. THE LIBRARIES in public schools have less professionals than the private ones.

THE GOVERNMENT is trying to improve libraries in public schools with some actions to increase the collections and put qualified professionals in them. PNBE - The National Program of School Librarianship: Collections for public school libraries

PNBE (Numbers) 10.607.700 books were distributed, 10.607. benefiting 24.723.458 students 24.723. from 4 to 11 years of age and adults receiving elementary education.

Unfortunately, these books are not helping to create structured libraries as the Naional Program intends

The best way to change and improve the Brazilian school libraries reality would be by making a substancial investment in their staff, with certified and qualified professionals.

The situation is about to change with a new Federal Law recently approved requiring local government and private education institutions to open and support libraries in every school and have librarians in them.
