    1. • WHAT is human trafficking? • WHO suffers? • WHO perpetrates? • HOW are individuals victimized? • WHAT are the recent statistics on the issue? • WHY does the problem exist and persist? • WHAT do Scripture and Catholic Teaching say? • WHAT values fuel illegal trafficking? • HOW can we help eliminate it? • WHAT progress has Canada made?

Human trafficking is defined as the recruitment, transport, harbouring or receipt of persons, by means of the threat or use of force or other forms of coercion, of abduction, of fraud, of deception, of the abuse of power or of a position of vulnerability, or the giving or receiving of payments or benefits to achieve the consent of a person having control over another person, for the purpose of exploitation.” - UNESCAP, 2009, pg. 1

Two Main Forms of Exploitation Resulting from Human Trafficking • Forced Labour or Sexual Exploitation • Services - Prostitution - Domestic servants - Unpaid or - Exotic Dancers underpaid work - Farm work - Escorts - Factory work - Bidding on - Street peddling Individuals as and begging - Child workers ‘Prizes’ - Adoption - Child Soldiers - Mail-order Brides

Refugees and Those living displaced persons in poverty due to war, natural disasters, etc. The Tourists socially excluded All persons, Runaways but most The prominently: uneducated and naive women and children Primary Vs. Secondary Primary: Individuals suffering through direct involvement. Secondary: Friends, families, schools, churches, communities.
