  • 3. HorizonWatching CommunityVirtualization – Trend OverviewVirtualization is one of the best ways to get more business value from an IT infrastructure. By decouplinglogical resources from physical assets, virtualization can empower an exceptionally swift response tochanging business conditions or changing business strategies.Over the last 3-4 years we’ve seen server virtualization really take off as a trend and now it is almoststandard technology in the data center. While security concerns remain a hurdle to deployment, we’llcontinue to see a focus on virtualization across the entire infrastructure in 2012.Drivers Virtualization Benefits• Desire to reduce IT operational / energy costs• Infrastructure complexity Improve service levels.• Networks and servers are better equipped to handle this technology• Desire to move towards cloud model Keep costs low. Enhance flexibility.Inhibitors/Challenges• New roles and responsibilities Simplify management.• Security of virtualized environment• Virtualization Management / UtilizationImplications of the Trend• IT Departments must understand their environment completely• Requires good communications between IT and Business Leaders• Security becomes more complex in a virtualized environment• Enterprises should thoroughly evaluate how business processes, administrative rights, capacity planning, performance monitoring tools, software asset management and security strategies will need to change3 January 17, 2012 Virtualization: A HorizonWatching Trend Report © 2012 HorizonWatching Creative Commons Attribution License

HorizonWatching CommunityVirtualization continues to be an important emerging disruptive trendand is an important requirement for cloud computingWhat is Virtualization? “Virtualization enhances flexibility and agility by detaching workloads and data from the functional side of physical infrastructure. Possibilities abound for networks, storage, servers and desktops, but virtualization also involves substantial upfront investment.” – Gartner (link) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IJM4GIfemT8A Foundation For Cloud Computing “It (virtualization) has driven transformation into every aspect of the datacenter, such as storage, networking, and management. The virtualization of all aspects of the datacenter, not just compute, will create the foundation for the cloud model of computing.” – IDC (link) “Through 2015, virtualization for large enterprises will be about serving as the basis for private cloud computing.” – Gartner (link) 4 January 17, 2012 Virtualization: A HorizonWatching Trend Report © 2012 HorizonWatching Creative Commons Attribution License

Adoption Levels Improve service levels. “Virtualization as an IT initiative is still in its adolescence, and is disruptive to IT users Keep costs low. and providers.” – Gartner (link) Enhance flexibility. “Data center virtualization had the highest Simplify management. penetration rate (52% of respondents) among the different types of green IT. Within the next couple of years this is projected to jump to 65% of organizations.” – Ovum (link) Source: IBM (link) “The use of virtualization has matured from simple partitioning and encapsulation to leveraging the mobility of virtual machines to improve management and operations of IT environments” – IDC (link) “Gartner says 40% of servers overall have been virtualized, but that the penetration will grow to 75% in 2015 and its for more than just costs; virtualization is a strategic asset that can improve business efficiency.” – NetworkWorld (link) 5 January 17, 2012 Virtualization: A HorizonWatching Trend Report © 2012 HorizonWatching Creative Commons Attribution License
  • 6. HorizonWatching CommunityIn 2012, there will be increased focus on desktop virtualization Desktop Virtualization Growth Webinar on Desktop Virtualization “Gartner expects growth in virtualization to continue and, for example, expects x86 server virtualization to double from 40% (in 2011) to 80% (by 2016).” – Gartner (link) “More than half of the organisations surveyed have client virtualisation as a critical or high priority over the next 12 to 18 months.” – Forrester (link) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7hplM6rQ9aU Desktop Virtualization Benefits “A recent CIO survey Ovum conducted found that simplifying the management of desktops to reduce costs and increasing business agility were the top two reasons for implementing desktop virtualization, so awareness of the potential benefits is high. – Ovum (link) 6 January 17, 2012 Virtualization: A HorizonWatching Trend Report © 2012 HorizonWatching Creative Commons Attribution License
