FROM OUR CHAPTER DIRECTORS:
WELL, WE ARE IN FULL SWING AND I SURE HOPE EVERYONE IS OUT
HAVING A GREAT TIME ON THOSE BIKES.
I WOULD LIKE TO TAKE A MINUTE TO THANK MY ASSITANT DIRECTOR,
MEL LUFSEY, FOR TAKING OVER THE GATHERING IN JUNE, AS LOIS AND
I WERE BUSY WITH OUR DAUGHTER’S WEDDING. I HAVE SAID IT
BEFORE, BUT IT IS WORTH REPEATING, IT IS VERY EASY TO LEAD A
GROUP SUCH AS OURS WHEN YOU HAVE STAFF MEMBERS THAT ARE
WILLING TO STEP FORWARD WHEN NEEDED. SO, AGAIN THANK YOU
MEL FOR YOUR HELP WHILE WE WERE GONE.
SPEAKING OF MY DAUGHTER’S WEDDING, I WILL TELL YOU IT WENT
QUITE WELL, ALL THINGS CONSIDERED. MY DAUGHTER WAS AS
BEAUTIFUL, IF NOT MORE, THAN I ALWAYS INVISIONED HER TO BE ON
THAT SPECIAL DAY. PICTURES (BUNCHES) CAN BE FOUND BY GOING TO
FACEBOOK AND SEARCHING FOR "ASHLEY CLOUSER". YEAH, OK, I AM A
UNFORTUNATELY FOR US, I HEAR WE MISSED A GREAT OUTING AT
CHATAQUA LAKE ON SUNDAY. I HAVE HEARD FROM SEVERAL THAT
THOUGHT IT WAS A GREAT TIME AND HOPEFULLY OTHERS WILL ADD
THEIR THOUGHTS FROM THAT DAY. I THANK HARI AND DAVE FOR
TAKING CARE OF THINGS.
KEEP AN EYE ON YOUR SCHEDULE AND FURTHER IN THIS ARTICLE
FOR THINGS TO COME IN JULY. I WILL SAY THAT THE PICNIC RIDE TO
THE PENINSULA IS A GOOD WEATHER RIDE ONLY. MORE DETAILS TO
OUR BIG TRIP IS COMING UP THE LAST 2 WEEKS OF JULY AND THE
WESTWARD HO'S ARE BEGINNING TO PACK AND MAKE FINAL
ARRANGEMENTS, AS WE ARE DOWN TO THE LAST FEW WEEKS. NINE
COUPLES ARE READY AND WAITING. THAT DOES NOT MEAN THERE IS
NOTHING GOING ON FOR THOSE NOT ATTENDING. BILL CRITES IS
HEADING UP A TRIP TO OHIO. MORE DETAILS OF THIS TRIP AT THE JULY
THE PRACTICE IS UNDER WAY AT THE SIMCOX PARTY BARN FOR
THE TALENT SHOW AT THE DISTRICT RALLY. WE WERE JOINED AT OUR
LAST PRACTICE BY SOME GW FRIENDS FROM OKLOHOMA AND CANADA.
(YES, THAT’S RIGHT.) TO ME, THIS WAS A VERY SPECIAL DAY FOR
CHAPTER PA-I AND GWRRA. WE WERE ABLE TO WELCOME SOME
PEOPLE WE DIDN'T EVEN KNOW AND MAKE THEM FEEL AT HOME. THERE
IS NO WAY WE WOULD HAVE MET THESE FOLKS WITHOUT GWRRA.
AGAIN, THE QUESTION COMES UP, WHAT DO YOU GET FOR YOUR $55 A
YEAR? WE HAVE SAID IT BEFORE; WE MEET FRIENDS FROM ACROSS
THE STATE AND ACROSS THE COUNTRY; AND NOW ACROSS OTHER
COUNTRIES. THINK ABOUT IT, IS THAT AWESOME OR WHAT? THESE
FOLKS GOT TO ENJOY THE LADIES PRACTICE ON THE BIKES,
(COMPARING THEM TO THE PURPLE PEDDLER'S EVEN) AND ALSO,
SOME BELL RINGING. I THINK WE LEFT OUR NORMAL, USUAL
IMPRESSION ON THEM AND THEY WERE ABLE TO LEAVE WITH FULL
BELLIES AND A SMILE ON THEIR FACES, AND THEY CERTAINLY LEFT US
WITH A GREAT FEELING IN OUR HEARTS AND A NEW FOUND
FRIENDSHIP THAT HOPEFULLY WE CAN REKINDLE ONE DAY DOWN THE
LASTLY, JUST A QUICK NOTE ON AN UPCOMING RIDE IN LATE
SEPTEMBER. THE CONNERS ARE LEADING A RIDE TO ONE OF LOIS'S
MOST FAVORITE PLACE'S, SKYLINE DRIVE. RIGHT NOW, WE ARE UP TO
POSSIBLY TEN BIKES, BUT THERE IS STILL ROOM. IMPORTANT THING, IF
YOU ARE CONSIDERING THIS TRIP, PLEASE MAKE RESERVATIONS, AS
THIS IS PRIME FALL RIDING IN THAT AREA AND I AM SURE THE HOTEL
WILL BE FILLING UP SOON. IF YOU DON'T HAVE THE INFO, PLEASE
CONTACT ME AND I WILL GET IT TO YOU. I PROMISE A VERY FUN
COUPLE DAYS WITH NOTHING BUT RIDING.
WE LOVE YA ALL,
RIDE SAFE.......TOM & LOIS
FROM OUR ACD’S--------
If you have participated in all the weekend rides that were scheduled in June, as I
have, then you have been very busy. Between trucking all week and riding the
goldwing on the weekends, I haven't been home much and the "TO DO" list is
getting longer. So, if you don't come to the July 10th gathering and you’re not going
on the Big Trip, you may not see me in July.
I do want to thank Gary who lead the ride to Reading, I enjoyed the day spent with
everyone. Jodi and I want to thank everyone who helped with the MS-150
weekend. Special thanks to the Gardners and Reams for taking charge of the
Father's Day ride. Jodi and I also enjoyed our day with everyone who participated
in the Daniel E. Stitt IV Memorial Ride. Chapter I was well represented and hats off
to Dan and Holly and their team of helpers for a fun day. I do want to say the
Chapter I table had a lot of winners of door prizes and the Chinese Auction. We
heard a lot of grumbling in the room, I think they thought we were cheating. We all
knew what was going on; we had MJ at our table!
Finally, Jodi and I enjoyed leading the June gathering in the absence of Tom and
Lois. Our ride for kids raffle brought in $105.00, bringing our new total to $1642.00.
We will be ending this drive at the July gathering. Holly Stitt will be donating two
Coconut Cream Pies and Jodi will be donating two Apple Pies. We will be doing this
as a Silent Auction and I will explain the rules at the beginning of the gathering. I
have already had some interesting questions on the types of bids that will be
accepted, so come early if you want to participate so you have a fair chance to bid.
I was asked at the beginning, what was my goal for this drive and I think I should
tell you. I replied $1000.00 but I would really like to see $1500.00 and you have
already exceeded that. I have some figures from last years drive from other
chapters and organizations that I will pass on to you at the gathering. Please know
how special it will be to me and all those who ride with me on August 8th when we
deliver your gift to the Kids and the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation.
Take Care ALL
Mel & Jodi
PLEASE DON'T FORGET THE GATHERING IN JULY HAS BEEN MOVED UP
A WEEK TO JULY 10TH. SAME PLACE, SAMETIME...
Hi all, from your Ride coordinators…………
Whew, is anybody having fun with their Wings so far? We certainly are. We are
having a great time riding and participating with all of our friends in Chapter I.
Let’s see now, there were the ice cream rides to Leeper and St Mary's and the
MS 150 and then there was the ride to Reading, Pa. for the WWII show and then
there was the great dinner cruise on Lake Chautauqua and this past weekend
you had the choice to go to Danny Stitt's Memorial Ride or Thunder in the Valley.
Also, our Chapter Gathering at Fat Man's this month. If you were able to attend
all of these events, you are doing great and mighty tired. If you were able to
attend any of these events, that is great also. No matter which of these events
you attended, I hope you enjoyed yourselves tremendously. Lee and I have been
able to attend almost all and I know we have had a great time with each and
everyone we were with. For those who were unable to attend, for one reason or
another, you were missed and we hope you can come to our other events
coming up. Wing Ding is occurring this coming weekend, June 30th thru July
3rd. As you have read on Tom's e-mail, the ride to Delgrosso amusement park
has been canceled because of that weekend being the 4th of July Holiday. And
a lot of folks have plans with their families. Our ice cream ride will be July 8th to
Deb's in Strattanville. Lee and I go there a little early, so we can have supper
there also. They have really good home cooked meals at a very reasonable
price. Hope to see you there. July 10th will be our gathering at Fat Man's; a week
early due to so many Chapter I folks being out of town the next weekend. If you
haven't heard, there are going to be several really good Pies up for auction at our
gathering this month. YUM YUM. I sure hope we get one. We are looking forward
to that. And I am looking forward to seeing what Dave Reams has for education
this month. He is doing a super job with his presentation. Keep up the great job,
Dave; we really do appreciate what you are doing for us. On July 11th, we are
planning a ride to the Erie Peninsula for a picnic, more details will be forthcoming
from Dana I am sure. While several of our Chapter is heading out west July 16th
through July 31st, Bill and Mary Ann have graciously volunteered to lead a group
to the Flea Market to Hartsfield, Ohio. We went on the trip last year and from
personal experience, that was a great trip. That Flea Market has all kinds of good
stuff. Their produce was awesome, so be sure and take your trailer with you.
Also, there is a really good Amish restaurant, which we enjoyed. Thank you so
much, Bill and Mary Ann, for volunteering to lead this ride. Finally, All Chapters
East will be July 30th thru August 1st. I don't have much info on this, however if
you are interested in attending, please give us a call and we will get the
information that you need to attend. Well, I believe that is all I have for right now.
We hope to see you all real soon. Lee and Donna
ATTEND & WIN,
Well, as many of you know by now, $100 was awarded to Bill Crissman for
simply showing up to a gathering and having his name drawn. That's all it takes,
Attend and have a chance to Win. $20 is up for grabs at Fatman’s in July.
See ya there..............
This riding season has been a season for "firsts" for us and we are having so much fun!
Our first "big" Chapter ride to Lake Chautauqua and the Institute led by Hari and Darla
Gardner was fantastic. They had everything timed and planned well. We had a picture
perfect day for the ride up and back (first visit for us to Lake Erie also). The ride on the
boat with lunch was relaxing and great with our Chapter friends, family and new friends
we made. Learning about the houses on the lake narrated by the boat captain and crew
was also interesting and had many of us glad that "we don't have to clean those big
houses!". The Institute was amazing and Hari had all information to make the tour fun
and informative. Thanks, Hari and Darla, for putting it together and doing such a great
P.S. Thank you, Sheila, for making Ken and I, as well as several others, full initiated
members of Chapter I with the "Toodi Ta Ta" dance!! I am sure there are photos that
will have us remembering exactly how funny we all looked and the fun we had.....!! For
those that missed it, there will be NO repeat performance, right all? Ha ha.
The next first was the ride for Dan Stitt Memorial. What a wonderful event Holly, Dan
and their respective family and friends do in remembrance of their son, brother and
friend, Dan. Holly, Dan, Thank you... the ride was great, the food was great, and the
bikers were great. Tom and Lois met up with us at where else? the ice cream place in
Distant! We were all happy to see them be able to ride with us. It was our first Poker
Run and it was fun..! Prizes were won by many and also by many at our table. Mel won
after having M J "touch" the tickets. Hmmm.... Mel, you did a wonderful job leading
our group to the check points and Dana, thanks for a different route back. We had a
great time! We are looking forward to next year.
On Thursday, we were able to make the ride to St. Mary's to meet up with some of the
Chapter members for "ice cream". We had a great ride and great time with everyone
Thank you all for the memories and friendships we are making! So many of you are
right about the fantastic memories and friends that you make for your GWRRA
membership fee. If we would not have stopped that day at the Walmart parking lot,
"we would not have spent so much money" but we would not have known any of you!
We are happy to be part of Chapter I family!
Have a great summer and safe riding!

Write, Right Now!
By Bryan Simanic
I suppose that you have seen the emails that encourage you to write to your State
Representatives, Congressional Representatives, etc. Well – Do you?
Some may say their letter, phone call or email means nothing and those may be the same
ones that do not vote because “one more vote doesn’t mean anything”. I believe that one
email, letter, or vote can mean something!
Lately there have been attacks on our second amendment right to keep and bear arms. I
am sure the many supporters that have contacted their representatives made the difference
to protect that second amendment right. Since this is a motorcycle organization, that topic
is for a different newsletter but it does parallel my thoughts about making your voice
heard by our legislators whether it be Local, State or Federal with the hope that you make
I am sure that virtually everyone that reads this newsletter has been held hostage by the
traffic light that will not change to green. We either; sit there and hope for a vehicle to
stop behind us in order to trip the sensor, or eventually ride through the red light in the
hopes that our reason for running a red light will be understood by the officer that may
There is a Pennsylvania bill being tabled and removed repeatedly, again - removed from
the table June 16. The bill pertains to allowing motorcycles and bicycles to proceed
through a red light when the detection sensor fails to recognize the motorcycle or bicycle.
I believe that it is worth your time to contact your Sate Representative and advise her/him
of your opinion on House Bill 590. My opinion is to support it, as it favors riders.
To read the bill and its history see the following link:
So like the title of this article reads – Write, Right Now!
By Bill and Peg Zortman
We’ve often heard it said that every motorcycle trip is an adventure – this is our
Our mighty leader, Tom, sent out the word that Oklahoma was temporarily
parting with a couple of their GWRRA members. Those members would like to
meet some of the PA-I Chapter participants.
The Chapter was scheduled to guard intersections for the annual MS Bicycle ride
from Pittsburgh to Erie that weekend and Tom would be giving his daughter to
his new son-in-law the following weekend. Timing might be a problem. Was
there a member out there who might have that time?
As luck would have it Bill & Peg Zortman could, would and looked forward to
meeting these new people.
Contact was made. Peg Zortman e-mailed Dwight and Darla McBride who live
near Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Dwight quickly returned the greeting with a
phone call to the Zortmans. We would meet somewhere Sunday for lunch.
When quizzed for special requests Dwight admitted they hoped for something
‘UNIQUE’ to the Chapter I area.
That request has a tendency to make you think, doesn’t it? What do we have in
the Chapter PA-I area that would be ‘unique’? Something that would be
interesting/tasty to someone from Oklahoma.
UNIQUE? Punxsutawney Phil our local and famous weather prognosticator and
the elk herds of the Pennsylvania Wilds immediately came to mind. We put a
packet of information together that Peg had picked up at a Pennsylvania Visitor
Center earlier this year. We thought about the Pennsylvania Laurel which is now
in full bloom and being celebrated in Brookville with a festival, and recalled many
fun motorcycle roads.
But unique food? Think about that.
Saturday evening Zortmans got the expected call from Dwight. They had safely
arrived. Plans were made to meet Sunday.
Sunday morning we awakened to rain. The Weather Channel threatened
scattered thunderstorms. Dwight’s call came from the Park in DuBois. They
were at the Community Church Service which would soon end and were parked
across the street… Oh, and by the way, there were now 7 people.
Bill & I made the 15 minute trip, found two Gold Wings with Oklahoma plates
(Names on one were Dwight and Darla) and waited.
We were soon joined by a group of people pretty much all talking at one time.
We introduced ourselves and were introduced. There were hand shakes and
hugs; then the men had a look at the planned route to lunch. Dwight punched the
address into his GPS and our wingless Chevy proudly led four beautiful Honda
Gold Wing motorcycles to a place we enjoy, The Farmers Inn near Sigel –
How did 2 become 7? As we understand the story….
Dwight and Darla’s friend, Larry LeTarte (also from Oklahoma) met them in
Buffalo, NY and they all traveled to Treasure Lake to stay the week in a time
share unit. While riding through that gated community they spotted a couple of
Gold Wings and stopped to say hello.
Thus they met and became instant friends with Theo & Diane Rood and Ron &
Lynda Wright all visiting here from near Lake Huron in Canada. “You meet the
nicest people on a Honda!”
A few misty sprinkles got our attention on the ride to the restaurant but the heavy
stuff held off until we were seated inside, then retreated once more for our ride
We traded stories, told some tall tales, ate some good food, bought some good
stuff and made a major memory. We really enjoyed meeting and getting to know
these wonderful people. Each has his or her own story to tell of the trip. Even
our waitress, Denise, will have stories to tell for a long time.
There was the designated “Dad” aka, Larry; the episode of the shared apple
butter and the mystery of the Amish basket. I will not give details. “What
happened at The Farmers Inn, stays at The Farmers Inn.”
We made a wonderful memory and have 7 new friends thanks to a 2 wheeled
conveyance and the GWRRA people who make every motorcycle ride an
I just want to give everyone the recipe for the snack mix that I made at the picnic for the

Linda & I wanted to write a note to say a big THANK-YOU to Hari and
Darla Gardner and Dave and Sheila Reams for the fantastic trip on
Father's Day. We had a last minute change in our vacation plans and
were so happy that there were still some spots available for the
trip. It was very evident that Hari and Dave had studied and planned
very well for the activities of the entire day. In true Chapter I
style, we had a great time. Thanks Again!!!
