(The users computer is connected to an e-mail server.) • Visto-hosted or mobile operator–hosted messaging servers that connect the desktop director and mobile devices over the Internet. (The messaging servers are not the e- mail servers.) • Mobile clients that are installed on the mobile devices.Visto Mobile Personal Edition™ (VMPE) provides two key benefits to users—simplicity andcontrol of e-mail access. Users without a mobile e-mail solution can obtain one without extrawork by their corporate Information Technology (IT) departments; users can easily downloadthe Visto Mobile Personal Edition™ (VMPE) installation application over the Web and theninstall and operate the desktop redirector software themselves. They can also set preferencesfor sending and receiving e-mail at timed intervals or on command. The desktop redirectorsoftware runs on Microsoft® Windows®-based computers that are running MicrosoftOutlook®. 2
  3. Visto Mobile Personal Edition™ (VMPE) offers mobile operators scalability and selection bysupporting most major subscriber segments, devices, messaging servers, billing models, andnotification mechanisms that are currently available. For mobile operators who implement thesolution, Visto Mobile Personal Edition™ (VMPE) has flexible customization options for brandingand ownership, including solution delivery, deployment, support, billing, and operations. Whenmobile operators implement Visto Mobile Personal Edition™ (VMPE), they receive support, collateral—in the forms of a data sheet, white paper, evaluation guide, and demonstration—and product knowledge from a single point of contact at Visto, which is supported by contactsat Microsoft. This selection allows the mobile operator to manage and contain costs associatedwith supporting, training, marketing, and implementing solutions from several vendors.Visto Mobile Personal Edition™ (VMPE) is ideal for individual mobile professionals, smalloffices, home offices, and enterprises that have servers running Microsoft Exchange or IBM®Lotus® Domino®.FunctionalityVisto Mobile Personal Edition™ (VMPE) extends the capability of Microsoft Pocket Outlook toprovide real-time synchronized access to e-mail messages received at the user’s desktopcomputer from the corporate messaging server. The device components are based on existingapplications on the Microsoft Windows Mobile™–based Pocket PC and Smartphone, such asPocket Outlook, Contacts, and Calendar. As long as the users device is connected to the messaging server, e-mail messages thatappear in the user-selected mailbox folders are synchronized with the mobile device through agateway that exists either at the Visto Network Operations Center (NOC) or at the mobileoperators NOC. Because Visto Mobile Personal Edition™ (VMPE) relies on the users desktopcomputer being connected to the corporate network, users can delegate the connection heldby their desktop redirector—between the gateway and the corporate messaging server—to upto five other desktop computers in their office that are running the software. Each desktopcomputer that is running the software can be delegated to by five other computers, effectivelygiving users five-way redundancy. By delegating these connections, users maintain privacy, security, and reliability.Mobile devices control synchronization, so users can configure their mobile devices to receiveand send e-mail messages as frequently as every 15 minutes. Alternately, users can perform amanual send/receive action. In both cases, the mobile devices establish network connectionsand retrieve e-mail through gateways, as opposed to gateways initiating communication withthe devices. If users have set their devices to synchronize automatically at set intervals, asopposed to manual synchronization, the devices automatically synchronize when they areturned on.The gateway provides highly available, real-time access architecture. Visto Mobile PersonalEdition™ (VMPE) supports e-mail with attachments, Calendar, Contacts, real-time access tofiles on the users desktop computer, and real-time access to the users global address list. Ifthe users desktop computer is not connected to the corporate network, the mobile deviceuses one of the computers that the connection has been delegated to rather than the usersdesktop computer; however, the users files will not be available. 3
  4. BenefitsVisto Mobile Personal Edition™ (VMPE) enables mobile operators to easily enter the enterprisemarket by offering a new premium subscription service on a proven hosted environment forindividual business e-mail users; they can offer the premium subscription service as acomplete service out of the box and sign up subscribers during the point of sale. The averageconversion rate from a free trial offer to purchase is 41 percent. For mobile operators, Visto Mobile Personal Edition™ (VMPE) provides higher average revenueper user by generating subscription revenues and driving data and incremental voice traffic asusers send and receive e-mail and make phone calls in response to e-mail.Visto Mobile Personal Edition™ (VMPE) can be sold directly to users without involving acorporate IT department. These users can then be seamlessly migrated to a Visto enterprisesolution when desired. Migration to an enterprise solution uses a standard implementationprocess for an IT department, and the migration process takes less than two minutes forusers.ImplementationBecause Visto Mobile Personal Edition™ (VMPE) takes advantage of existing wireless networktechnologies, existing users can subscribe to the service. Subscriptions from existingcustomers immediately increase a mobile operators revenue, customer retention, andnetwork efficiencies. For Exchange and IBM® Lotus Notes® users, Visto Mobile PersonalEdition™ (VMPE) offers protective features that promote online safety of wireless e-mailsynchronization.ArchitectureThe architecture of Visto Mobile Personal Edition™ (VMPE) allows it to be implemented quicklyand safely to immediately generate higher data revenues for mobile operators. Also, becauseVisto can host the gateway, this solution enables operators to maintain low operational andstartup ownership costs and obtain easy market entry. Operational cost of ownership isdirectly linked to market adoption; per-user charges can be passed on to the customerthrough a billing charge or an increase in airtime charges.Basic mail can be ready for the market in 30 days; the Visto-hosted solution(branded/billed/supported—first level) can be ready for the market in two to three monthsdepending on the scope of mobile operator integration.Visto Mobile Personal Edition™ (VMPE) also promotes increased adoption rates of itself, increased usage, and lower churn because it is easy to install and use.Marketing and DeliveryAlthough Visto Mobile Personal Edition™ (VMPE) is a retail product, the security featuresprovide enough protective features for enterprise applications. It also has the ability to matchsynchronization and mobile profiles, allowing users more freedom while roaming and unlimitedsynchronization options. Because of these benefits, this solution is highly valued by users.By allowing mobile operators to brand the interface of Visto Mobile Personal Edition™ (VMPE),Visto offers greater marketing flexibility, lower delivery cost, and higher return on investment. The solution is also reliable. If Visto hosts the gateway, the service level agreement with Vistoguarantees up to 99.9 percent availability across the Visto NOC. Also, Visto Active Monitoringmonitors the health of the Visto servers at its NOC, allowing Visto to proactively alert mobileoperators of potential server issues. 4
  5. How Visto Mobile Personal Edition™ (VMPE)WorksTo synchronize with the corporate messaging server (the e-mail server) behind the corporatefirewall, the device establishes a direct, encrypted connection with the gateway that is runningthe VMPE software. The gateway then establishes a direct, encrypted connection through thegateway firewall and the corporate firewall to the users desktop computer, or to one of thedelegated computers that is running the redirector software. The computer needs to beconnected to the corporate messaging server behind the corporate firewall.Data is synchronized between the corporate messaging server and the computer, between thecomputer and the gateway, and between the gateway that is running the VMPE software andthe users device. At the gateway, data is exchanged as messages or transactions at theapplication level. The gateway runs Visto Mobile Personal Edition™ (VMPE) software that actsas an Internet-based real-time message conduit between the user’s computer and the mobiledevice. To protect the contents of messages en route, the messages are encrypted by both thesoftware on the user’s desktop computer and the software on the mobile device beforetransmission to the gateway. Visto does not have access to the security mechanisms used bythe mobile device and the users computer, so Visto does not have access to any messagecontent. The following diagram displays this process. 5
  6. Security FeaturesOne of the biggest concerns for the wireless industry is securing message content duringtransmission. The Visto Mobile Personal Edition™ (VMPE) security protocols and architectureensure that the message is encrypted from the beginning of transmission through to thereceipt. Visto Mobile Personal Edition™ (VMPE) is flexible and offers a number of securityoptions to help safeguard messages and content from being accessed and read by unintendedrecipients and readers, including Advanced Encryption Standard (AES), secure sockets layer(SSL), wireless application protocol (WAP), wireless transport layer security (WTLS), Blowfish, and Internet protocol security (IPSec).Visto designed all elements of Visto Mobile Personal Edition™ (VMPE) from the ground up tosupport enterprise-class security, enabling users to access their corporate e-mail withoutcompromising security. Visto Mobile Personal Edition™ (VMPE) uses 128-bit AES encryptionend to end and maintains compliance with all major standards for delivering its mobile accesssolution over networks, on mobile devices, and on enterprise systems. AES encryption andcompliance with all major delivering standards makes Visto Mobile Personal Edition™ (VMPE) acost-effective solution for providing universal, encrypted access to messaging data from abroad array of mobile devices without compromising ease of deployment, management, orperformance.Underlying the Visto Mobile Personal Edition™ (VMPE) security architecture are the followingrecognized security technologies: • SSL based on Rivest-Shamir-Adleman (RSA) 128-bit data encryption so that data is transmitted with the best protective features • Digital certificates from VeriSign to ensure that users are connecting to the encrypted, authorized gateway on a server running VMPE software • Optional end-to-end encryption using Certicom-based AES 128-bit data encryptionThe following diagram illustrates the security features of Visto Mobile Personal Edition™(VMPE) communications. 6
  7. The followingdiagram shows the high-level architecture of the solution. Aside from some of the mobiledevices, the various components shown in the diagram are all hosted on hardware that runsMicrosoft products.Desktop Redirector SoftwareThis software is installed on the users computer that resides behind the corporate firewall andsynchronizes data from the messaging server, such as a Microsoft Exchange server, to themobile device through the gateway. The desktop redirector runs as a background program on the users computer that must beonline with the users corporate network and logged on to the corporate e-mail server toredirect e-mail messages. The software is proxy and firewall compatible. 8
  9. GatewayThe gateway, which can be hosted by Visto or licensed by the mobile operator, acts as anencrypted, real-time conduit for messages between the mobile device and the messagingserver. Web servers (Microsoft Windows NT®/Microsoft Windows 2000 with InternetInformation Services [IIS]), database servers (Windows NT/Windows 2000 with Oracle), andsynchronization servers (Windows NT/Windows 2000 with SyncML) are supported. Thegateway is surrounded by a firewall.Windows Mobile–based Device Client SoftwareWindows Mobile software is installed on the mobile device and makes data available online oroffline to the mobile user. To install the device client software on the mobile device, MicrosoftActiveSync® must be installed on the desktop computer. ActiveSync is used only forinstallation of the client software on the device, not for data synchronization.During synchronization, the device client software interacts with the address book andCalendar built into the Windows Mobile software and extends to the functionality of PocketOutlook e-mail services. To provide a seamless experience for the user, the Visto MobilePersonal Edition™ (VMPE) Inbox appears as a separate account within the Pocket Outlookinbox tree on the device. After installation, Visto Mobile Personal Edition™ (VMPE) is thedefault account used. 9
