Mental illness in children can be difficult for parents to identify. This results into; many children who could benefit from treatment do not get the assistance they require.

Not many parents know the signs and symptoms of mental illness in children. Even if they know the red flags, it can be hard to differentiate signs of a problem from normal childhood behavior.

  • 3. What are the common disorders?• Attention Deficit Disorders with/withoutHyperkinesis• Depression• Specific Learning Disabilities• Autistic Spectrum Disorder• Oppositional Defiant Disorders• Conduct Disorders
  • 4. There are also a number of problems associatedwith issues such as living in a household whereinthere is parental disharmony, or wherein oneparent is a substance abuser, or where the familyis made up of a single parental unit.These cause a number of reactions that mightneed to be deal with by a mental health expert.
  • 5. Special problemsSubstance abuse in a child or an adolescent
  • 6. Problems related to child abuseSpecial problems
  • 7. Issues relating to sexualitySpecial problems
  • 8. Problems related to suicidal ideation andactionSpecial problems
  • 9. For each of these, a proper evaluation isnecessary before a diagnosis is made.Often there is use of a multi-disciplinaryunit…comprising of Psychiatrist, Psychologist,Occupational Therapist and Special educator.Medication may be indicated whereinnecessary.
