ACLS-EP Presentation

Published on

The goal of the ACLS EP Course is to improve outcomes in complex cardiovascular, respiratory and other (eg, metabolic, toxicologic) emergencies by expanding on core ACLS guidelines and encouraging critical thinking and decision-making strategies. Through instruction and active participation in case-based scenarios, learners enhance their skills in the differential diagnosis and treatment of prearrest, arrest and postarrest patients.

ACLS EP has been updated to reflect science from the following:
• 2010 AHA Guidelines for CPR and ECC
• 2013 American College of Cardiology Foundation (ACCF)/AHA Guidelines for the Management of ST-Elevation Myocardial Infarction
• 2012 ACCF/AHA Focused Update of the Guideline for the Management of Patients With Unstable Angina/Non–ST-Elevation Myocardial Infarction
Course Content:
• Applying the expanded systematic approach (ACLS-EP Survey) to patient assessment, evaluation and management
• Cardiovascular Emergencies
• Cerebrovascular Emergencies
• Respiratory and Metabolic Emergencies
• Post-Cardiac Arrest Care
• Clinical Pharmacology and Toxicology Emergencies
• High Quality CPR
• Effective communication within a resuscitation team and recognition of the impact of team dynamics on overall team performance
• Uses case-based scenarios to move beyond the algorithms and show learners how to apply critical thinking to quickly reach a differential diagnosis and effectively manage treatment
• Includes more of the cases and information learners have requested, including pharmacology, toxicology, respiratory and metabolic cases
• Includes 68 scenarios, including prehospital, emergency department and inhospital scenarios, so the course to be customized to best meet the needs of learners
• ACLS Provider exam is completed online before class allowing learners more time to share and learn from peers
• Continuing education credits available

  • Used as an ACLS update for clinical staff that know ACLS well and want to go deeper and beyond the algorithm.
  • This course would be too in depth for new practitioners or for folks who do not participate in codes regularly.
  • Students benefit from each other’s expertise and the instructor facilitates discussion around the cases. The text really is a reference text and should be used during the course. There are charts and figures that a student can reference during the cases and the instructor may reference specific pages.
  • Capnography measures exhaled Carbon Dioxide from the body and is measured numerically and in a waveform. Watch video for a better idea. Your customers will know what it is. Post―Cardiac Arrest Care often includes therapeutic hypothermia or cooling the victim for 12-24 hours post arrest. The first 4 videos are on the student website.
  • Specialty cases like OB are under Cardiovascular and drowning under respiratory. Cases and videos might end up being used by instructors in regular ACLS, especially the capnography video.
  • This testing has to be passed in order for a student to get an ACLS-EP card. There is no written ACLS-EP exam which is why they must pass the ACLS exam.
  • Use established process on the AHA Instructor Network
  • Once on the site show people the videos, the ACLSprecourse assessment (which is the same as for ACLS) and then show them the link for the student to get into the site type in aclsresource and hit submit. ACLS test itself. This requires a key that costs $7.50 and purchased from our distributors.

    1. 1. ACLS for Experienced Providers(ACLS EP)
    2. 2. ACLS EPThe goal of this course is to improve outcomes incomplex cardiovascular, respiratory/metabolic,toxicologic and other emergencies by expanding oncore ACLS guidelines using critical thinking anddecision-making strategies.
    3. 3. Who should attend?• Advanced practitioners who are very familiar andcomfortable with the ACLS algorithms and havebeen through ACLS several times; also, those whoregularly participate in resuscitations• Paramedics, code team MDs, RN’s, flight nurses andparamedics, ICU MDs and nurses, ER nurses andMDs
    4. 4. New course - new approachThrough facilitation and active participation in case-based scenarios, students strengthen their skills inreaching a differential diagnosis and quickly creating atreatment plan for pre-arrest, arrest and post-arrestpatientsPeer-to-peer learning
    5. 5. What is in ACLS EP?Course videos:• Systematic Approach for Experienced Providers• EMS Case• ED Case• In-hospital Case• Waveform Capnography• Post―Cardiac Arrest Care
    6. 6. Case Scenarios68 different scenarios including pre-hospital, emergencydepartment and in-hospital scenarios to allow the courseto be customized to best meet the needs of the audience• 27 Cardiovascular Cases• 19 Clinical Pharmacology & Toxicology Cases• 15 Respiratory & Metabolic Cases• 8 Post—Cardiac Arrest Care Cases
    7. 7. Course CompletionFor successful course completion, students must activelyparticipate in all case-based scenarios and must meet allcurrent ACLS course completion requirements including:• Pass the 1-rescuer CPR and AED skills test• Pass the bag-mask ventilation skills test• Pass the Megacode skills test• Pass the ACLS Provider exam with a score of 84 percentor higher—take online before allowed to attend course
    8. 8.
