  • 1.  To identify what codes and conventions are To apply this knowledge to magazine front covers
  • 2.  ..are the things that are typical of a specific medium. So some of the conventions of a magazine might be: A masthead (title) Sell-lines/Coverlines Strapline, tagline or slogan Price and Bar code Cover model or celebrity photo  SO WHAT ABOUT CODES?
  • 3.  One dictionary definition of the word code isA system of symbols, letters, or words given certain meanings, used for delivering messages requiring secrecy. So a media text like a magazine has a message that it wants to communicate to us (mainly, this is “buy this magazine”!) and there are certain methods (or codes) by which it does this. We might say that codes give a message or meaning to particular conventions.
  • 4. What sort of coded meanings (orassociations) can you get from thefollowing conventions of themagazine:-Title-Strapline-Cover models look-Sell-linesDiscuss with your partner and writethem down! THEN try to think whatthey tell you about the AUDIENCE forthis product.
  • 5.  You are now going to create a basic layout for a magazine front cover, using the conventions mentioned earlier: Masthead Coverlines/Sell-lines Strapline Cover Image Barcode and Price
  • 6.  Complete a detailed analysis of a film poster, DVD cover, CD cover and Games cover Look at: Layout Design Language Present it as annotations
