  • 2. Ain Shams Model United Nations Four years in ASMUN and only one dream was in my mind, that energetic, positive community with all its achievements ought to be memorized in a beautiful remarkable magazine. I learnt from ASMUN that a person can be sometimes proud of his mistakes. Its not only yourself who might have learnt from these mistakes and faults, but make sure that the future team as well as your current team will be learning from them too. Thus, the more mistakes you do the more you and others surrounding you learn throughout facing newer challenges. Therefore I myself decided to accept the challenge to create this magazine. Although I am not experienced enough nor had an idea how to make such a thing, I kept trying harder and harder everyday. I have conducted researches, read more and asked people around me who might have more experience in such field. I believe that even this challenge was not as easy as it may sound, I am proud that I learnt from this experience the hard way and making the magazine from scratch. It doesn’t really matter whether you can do it or you cannot, it’s all about your faith, belief and what you seek and desire. I aspired to see this magazine coming to life, and here my dream comes true and my efforts all in your hands. I hope that you enjoy reading the magazine as much as I enjoyed the time making this magazine. I am further looking forward for the criticisms of the future team to our humble work. I believe in the future people's potentials and how much they can do. I hope that they never lose faith and keep trying to learn to make ASMUN a better place for themselves and others. At the end, I am grateful and thankful for some certain people, to whom without their efforts, ASMUNIA magazine would not have come to life. I would like to htank personally and show my gratitude to all ASMUNERS, starting from the members, delegates, heads, secre- tariats and ending with our elite high board to their priceless contributions in the articles, the stories, the poems, the photos and the innovative painting. Many thanks as well for 2011 team for their huge accomplishment ASMUNIA café and the Flash Back sections. I hope that everyone would take from this experience as much as I did, and maybe one day you'd be the person in my place writing this article and inspiring other people. It was all about having fun in the end, besides learning useful techniques that would help us all in our future life. It was an extraordinary adventure we had this year. Some would say it’s the same as last years, but when I took that post at the very beginning, I had a vision, a plan that all of my future team enjoys & learns at the same time. In this magazine (in its first issue), you’ll see how it’s like to be an ASMUNer, how the journey & the struggle kept on going since the early starts until now. I hope this shows you how the road for the High Board, heads, secretariats, OC members & delegates was hard but at the same time fun. ASMUN ’12 might’ve reached an end but the spirit inside each and every ASMUNer never fades away. I sincerely wish you all the luck in the world, & I hope you always remember this experience the way it’s ought to be remembered: fun, lovely memories and a life changing experience that enriches all your lives in the future. With all my love and respect, Fatma Ahmadein, Secretary General ASMUN’12. Ain Shams Model United Nations

  • 5. Recruiting the Secretariats was a very critical stage in the model, we had to be very careful in choosing the persons whom will be charged with the academic respon- sibility in the model, we were selecting people who will have a huge impact on their delegates and who wanted to improve themselves personally, so the choice was not easy, as there were many secretariats who fitted the criteria we were looking for, in the end the selection was made and we were more than thrilled by the outcome, as we got to see during the entire course of the model how much these secretariats have grown and how they rose to the occa- sion in many situations, so thank you secretariats for all of your hard work Aliaa Enbaa Graduate Advisor To gather the similar spirits into one magical box, to guide those with common goals into the same destination, that‛s what the recruitment was all about; choos- ing people who fit most into the purpose of the model , those who look for knowledge and true experience. Idealism was not the goal, only dedication and basic require- ments were needed, but still, it wasn‛t easy; it took a lot of effort to play the matchmaker role, to find the right crew for the ship or the model will end up like titanic, patience was required, nervousness and irritation were a common thing before and through the interviews, but a calming word , an assuring smile or a tap on the shoulder could make a great difference, it was a huge responsibility, but also a new way to make friends even those who may not get accepted , and a message foreveryone who got accepted ; you arespecial . • 6. asmun’s booth Spelunca , this is the word for cave in Latin and that‛s exactly what the booth sounded like at first , a place that traps you all day to give information. The evil guy inside me whispered; run for your life. But from day one, this idea has changed, I did not realize that some wood, a couple of nails, hard work with lots of laughter and lots of blue paint can create such a thing, it was beauty. Although we were all covered in blue, our hearts were all covered with pride, it felt like it would be the start of something amazing, and it was.As time passed, a growing passion toward this box has dominated each of us, it turned into the place we run into, where hard work was colored with joy, strangers turned into friends and frowns got straightened up. This little cave, this spelunca, turned to be the thing that binds us all, and holds memories we shall never forget Ahmed Abdel MoetyMember PR. “it turned into the place we run into”
  • 7. title Have you ever bought a present for your best friend and cared so much how hewill react upon seeing it? , that’s how the opening was to us: OC’s , It was anadventure where fear and eagerness walked together to the end of the road, where hard work of more than 6 weeks sums up to one night. This night though we all knew each other, we seemed at different worlds, theamount of responsibility was heavier than mount Everest , tiredness hided undersmiles, suits and dresses covered bodies that needed sleep instead, all wasgathered toward one goal, making it worth Through that night, between the lines read by a guest and the laughter ofsomeone, between lights turning off or a balloon exploding, the sound of awhisper or a heartbeat of joy, you could sense some kind of mysterious energy, anenergy that has the fragrance of dedication and the odor of will, an energythat represented itself through us at the end of the night, shouting alltogether the word: ASMUN. That’s my dear what happens when teamworkblends with love, that’s how the soft opening was for all of us. Soft Opening Ahmed Abdel Moety Member PR.
  • 8. If you are wondering about the sessions or just reading to remember you will most certainly find the following lines satisfying, sessions have been intense, sweet and simple yet extremely hiding great meanings within, it occurred in two worlds at the same time, one inside the rooms; behind closed doors and another outside. a dimension where the academics thoughts were channeled and arguments for the sake of knowledge have been raised , and other dimension where warm energy surrounded the place , and passion blended with dedication. Breaks where not about food, not about the smell of hot coffee , the fact is that they where the gates of time that open to let the two worlds melt into one, where the vanilla meets with chocolate , but that wasn‛t it all , what the team of OC‛s has worked on, is that once in a while this gate opens to a different dimension of time , just for fun, you could find a session with people wearing and acting like being sent from the 70‛s , and another with Arabian oriental theme ,you could sense the vibe all this send, an atmosphere of passion , a message said out loud through the dances and the laughter ; learning don‛t have to be boring ,it can be the most amazing experience of your life. • 9. Through the old ages, wars arose among nations and colli- sions of powers disturbed the river of time. Roman empire, Persia, Egypt, Emperor of china, as well as Europe, all of them have tasted the bitterness of war. Friends, families and lovers have been torn away from each other by the claws of hunger for power, and wherever you land your foot ; you are in a land that was once wet with blood. For that reason your mind brought you here & your soul guided you to understand; why do nations should be united as one, why roofs are built to gather countries under them, and why models are established to understand that.. It’s for a greater reason: peace. The opening ceremony shall be your ticket, you have been invited because you are unique, and from that moment you will be set off for a journey you will never forget, an experience through which you can find knowledge and chal- lenge, a destination where you can satisfy your thirst for learning and hunger for being unique. Minds are different and for that reason they meet: to get nourished, that’s what will you get from the conference, you should find a friend among the strangers, and a special stranger within you. In conferences there are no large or tiny countries, but there are great minds or small ones. Make the best of whatever you have because simply you can, prove to yourself you are able to make a change even a little one ,yes it’s just a model , but with little things starts the great ones, be sure that in this very hall you’re going to walk with future presidents , ministers, prime ministers and leaders, cause the reason that brought you here, the will that pushed you to continue and the determination that you hold to learn, you will find in others too ,with a bit of challenge , all of this is not a matter of coincidence , it’s what this model works for ,and what you seek, being among the great . The model slogan is “when positives attract nations collide in peace”, you are one of these positives; so, attract, learn, enjoy and collide in peace. The Grand Opening ASMUN Ahmed Abdel Moety Member PR.
  • 10. About the journey as a whole there is a lot to talk about, so I will get to the point and dig only into the sessions. Simply ,it was amazing, intense yet very useful , dramatic in a sweet way; countries rising for a motion &others falling to express, hunger to find your allies, the usual drama of big countries and small ones ,Funny with some mistakes, slips, and hysterical laughter sometimes , ”after all, it’s just a model”, It was dynamic, shifting from one mode to another ; moderate, immoderate caucus and formal, and it wasn’t long till blocks of different regions formed ,each discussing their plans, “hopefully not evil ones :)” . All of that was fitting into a huge artistic paint- ing that showed up in the draft resolu- tion, voted upon, in a breath taking conference and a beautiful finale for the story. The only voice that was louder than the applause was our heartbeats knowing that we were leaving this magnificent journey, not only because of the uniqueness of the experience, but because of the people we met and the friends we made. Ahmed Abdel Moety Delegate in RomeMUN & Member PR. 5 years ago when asmun was founded, the purpose was to reach out to students and create a community where they can discuss thoughts, exchange infor- mation and have a debate on them however this wasnt just the vision, they were just the first steps in order to create a a global community where egyptian students are exposed to students from all over the globe. this year asmun has succeeded to achieve this vision as it became partners with romemun, where an exchange program is conducted between the two models allowing a very enriching experience for the participants in both models, we take extreme pride in our partnership with romemun and hope within the next years that we gain more partners from different countries and see the vision that started out 5 years ago to continue for years to come. • 11. Discover The Seventies The 70s were the decade when everything was laid back and relaxed, and the attitude spilled over into the slang of the day. From the hippies to the disco divas, people in the 70s had unique ways of expressing themselves. Feelin’ groovy You can’t think about the 70s without fighting the urge to say “Groovy, man!” The era’s favorite word for anything fun, cool, or interest- ing began with the long- haired hippies and spread across the nation. It was joined in popularity by two other staples of the 70s vocabulary – “Far out!” and “Outta sight!” were both common ways to respond to something that was beyond groovy. Boogie or get down The most commonly known are the terms “boogie” or “get down” to describe dancing. Dancing queens of the 70s hit the floor to “shake their groove thing”, or simply to “groove” to the music. Funky The term “funky” also evolved out of the music scene, but came to mean something cool and different rather than its original musical connotation. Catch you on the flipside! Greetings and taking your leave in the 70s were never as simple as hello and goodbye. On your way out the door you might say “Check you later”, “Catch you on the rebound (or flipside)” or the popular “Peace out”. Greetings were equally colorful, such as, “What’s crackin’?” “What it is?” or “What’s shakin’?” Dropping the “g” at the end of “ing” words was very common. 70s slang was all about being cool, hip, and in the know. The 70s were all about taking things easy, relaxing and getting down with your bad self – a scene that created a vocabulary all its own.
