  • 3. Themes are either: <ul><li>Stated directly—the “meaning” of the story is said in the story </li></ul>
  • 4. Implied—a reader must decide what the message of the story is by looking at other elements such as plot outcomes. To understand implied themes sometimes you must think about it a lot or read it several times . OR:
  • 5. <ul><li>A. (Title of work)_ is about (single word)_______. </li></ul><ul><li>B. (Title of work)__ shows that (a statement about A. _____. </li></ul>Thematic Statements
  • 6. Example: <ul><li>“ The Lottery” is about </li></ul><ul><li>“ The Lottery” shows that we should not conform to a society just to fit in; we should stand up for our beliefs and what is right. </li></ul>conformity .
  • 7. Example: <ul><li>“ The Necklace” is about </li></ul><ul><li>“ The Necklace” shows that we should not be too proud to tell the truth. Sometimes, it saves us a lot of trouble. </li></ul>pride.
