Great Lakes beaches are vital to our economy, ecology and way of life. Keeping beaches healthy is our responsibility. Great Lakes Restoration funding is critical for improving our beaches by providing dollars for public education, monitoring to pinpoint pollution sources, projects to eliminate pollution sources, and monitoring to ensure restoration success.

Project Purpose <ul><ul><ul><li>Kenosha Stormwater Utility is committed to: </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>Protecting the water resources within the City of Kenosha for the use and benefit of the public. </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>Providing educational opportunities for the residents, visitors and school age children to identify the issues surrounding the health of our natural resources including the impacts stormwater has on our environment. </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>The Pennoyer Outfall provided an opportunity to combine these two goals into an educational opportunity to have a project on the ground that helps identify these issues while providing a method to enhance water quality. </li></ul></ul></ul>
    7. 7. Pennoyer Beach Health <ul><ul><ul><li>Impaired beach by the Wisconsin DNR due to high levels of bacteria encountered during monitoring. Beach often closed due to high levels of bacteria </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>- Testing of the outfall resulted in an average reading of 2,500 MPN / 100 mL which is approximately an order of magnitude higher then acceptable levels for bathing/human contact. Pennoyer Beach Health <ul><ul><ul><li>Heavy storms often create turbulent flows that impact the beach causing sedimentation to be discharge to the Lake. </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>- Seagulls concentrate on the beach which may also be the cause of poor water quality. </li></ul></ul></ul>Photos Courtesy of Julie Kinzelman

Infiltration Basin <ul><li>Stormwater Treatment Infiltration Basin will: </li></ul><ul><li>Collect, Detain, Store, Filter and Infiltrate Stormwater from the Drainage Area </li></ul><ul><li>Reduce Bacterial Loading onto the Beach </li></ul><ul><li>Reduce nonpoint source pollutants (sediments) by reducing some of the turbulent flows </li></ul><ul><li>will modify the outfall location to allow for more acceptable grade transition from top of the hillside to the beach </li></ul>Preliminary Plan designed - AECOM

Infiltration Basin <ul><li>Stormwater Treatment Infiltration Basin will: </li></ul><ul><li>Be planted with Native Plants and Beach Grasses creating a berm/dune around the outer limits and reduce erosion issues. </li></ul><ul><li>Provide a change to the ecosystem to potentially make this area less attractive to sea gulls who prefer open areas. Subsurface Sedimentation Vaults <ul><li>Subsurface Sedimentation Vaults will: </li></ul><ul><li>Act as a pretreatment device for the infiltration basin </li></ul><ul><li>Collect Debris and some sediment before discharging into the Treatment/Infiltration Basin </li></ul><ul><ul><li>extend the life of the facility </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>reduce the operational and maintenance costs associated with the basin. </li></ul></ul>Photo Courtesy of AECOM (Not Pennoyer Beach)

Parkway Bioswales <ul><li>Parkway Bioswales will: </li></ul><ul><li>Act as a pretreatment device for the infiltration basin </li></ul><ul><li>Provide an Educational Component to the neighborhood, residents, visitors and children </li></ul><ul><li>Allow the residents to take ownership of the project </li></ul><ul><li>Provide a reminder that what we do on our properties and within our communities impacts our Lake </li></ul>Source: www.washington-apa.org
