PURPOSE <ul><li>To promote prevention in Cardiovascular disease and Cancer . </li></ul><ul><li>This slide show will share ways how people can reduce the incidents of these diseases if they decrease high-risk behaviors and promote education on early detection . </li></ul><ul><li>People don’t die of obesity or from smoking – they die from CVD and cancer (obesity & smoking are risk factors to these diseases) </li></ul>
  3. 3. AUDIENCE <ul><li>Males </li></ul><ul><li>17 - 22 years of age </li></ul><ul><li>College freshman </li></ul>

SLIDE 1 <ul><li>Introduce a fictional character. ‘i.e. Meet Manuel’ </li></ul><ul><li>Tell us what he died of… “he died of skin cancer’ </li></ul><ul><li>NOTE: Go to: http://tinyurl.com/U6Slides to select the type of cancer/cardio disease. Choose one that HAS NOT BEEN chosen. </li></ul><ul><li>Your character does not have to be a freshman male – BUT your presentation has to appeal to him. </li></ul>
  5. 5. SLIDE 2 <ul><li>Educate your audience of the risk factors associated with the disease (Pages 367-375 will prove to be a great resource for this assignment.) </li></ul><ul><li>Is it family history? Is it a certain behavior? Etc. </li></ul>
  6. 6. SLIDE 3 <ul><li>Educate your audience of the warning signs or symptoms associated with the disease (Pages 367-375 will prove to be a great resource for this assignment.) </li></ul><ul><li>What warning signs or symptoms lead to early detection of your disease ? </li></ul>
  7. 7. SLIDE 4 <ul><li>Point out TWO behaviors your character could have done to reduce and/or prevent his/her risks for disease. </li></ul><ul><li>Be specific. </li></ul><ul><li>“ Had Manuel (done this) and (done that)…he might have prevented…” etc. </li></ul>
  8. 8. SLIDE 5 <ul><li>Tell us what your character would have been doing if he had taken more preventative measures to avoid his/her outcome. </li></ul>
  9. 9. EXAMPLE <ul><li>Be dramatic for the sake of capturing the attention of your audience. Make an impact! </li></ul><ul><li>But be specific in your statements or your audience may roll their eyes and think “this doesn’t apply to me” </li></ul><ul><li>The next set of slides an example of this assignment / slide show (NOTE: It is not geared to college audience, but you’ll still get an idea of the assignment) </li></ul>

  11. 12. He noticed a lesion on his skin one morning. It was abnormal and very discolored, but he thought it would eventually go away. After a couple of months, he finally went to the doctor for a biopsy.
  12. 13. Manuel could have taken more skin self-exams and done a better job tracking the moles on his skin. He could have also avoided too many hours of sun exposure without sunscreen or hat.
