  • 1. UNIT 5 Encouraging Physical Activity Slide Show Instructions
  • 2. PURPOSE
    • To tug on the emotional strings of that friend or family member who needs an extra push to get them active.
    • You are now equipped with the facts to help those you care about combat any excuse they make NOT to go workout!
  • 3. AUDIENCE
    • A stubborn family member or friend who KNOWS they should exercise but never gets around to it.
    • They make too many common excuses and although they have good intentions to workout, well… they never do it regularly.
    • You know who I’m talking about… we all have that one person in our life!
  • 4. SLIDE 1
    • Who would you like to see become more active? Who do you think is too sedentary or insufficiently active and could use a little encouragement from you to get going!?
    • Choose someone who you think will truly benefit from your message. Pick a family member or friend, for instance.
    • Start the slide show addressing this person directly (Dear dad, or To: my wife, or ‘Yo, Bro’ whatever it takes to get their attention!)
  • 5. SLIDE 2
    • Highlight a behavior that is affecting their commitment to lead a more active lifestyle.
    • For instance, do they choose to participate in sedentary activities (always watch movies, play video games, etc?)
    • Who is this person and what kind of lifestyle have you noticed ?
  • 6. SLIDE 3
    • Highlight an excuse that is affecting their commitment to lead a more active lifestyle.
    • For instance, do they make excuses that allow them to avoid being active (my back hurts, I have asthma, don’t have time, etc.)
    • List 2-3 excuses you’ve heard this person say.
  • 7. SLIDE 4
    • You no longer will tolerate any of these excuses. It’s time to offer this person take your challenge!
    • The challenge: participate in one of the following aerobic activity (listed here: http:// tinyurl.com/U5Slides ) with you this week! Be specific about time and duration.
    • NOTE: Select ONE aerobic activity per student
  • 8. SLIDE 5
    • Why should this person participate in this challenge with you? Include
      • Benefits of aerobic activity (please list benefits specific to your activity, avoid listing generic benefits of exercise. See pages 282 – 291 for more info)
      • Why you think they might enjoy this activity?
    • Remember to create statements that will be relevant to your person.
  • 9. EXAMPLE
    • Basically, the sentiment you want to elicit from your audience is “Well, if you say it that way, how can I refuse!”
    • The next set of slides is an example of this assignment / slide show.
  • 10. Dear Dad: Photo credits: domi-san
  • 11. Photo credits: domi-san I notice you spend most of your workday in front of the computer. You also don’t seem to give yourself many breaks.
  • 12. Photo credits: domi-san Whenever I ask you to come to the gym with me, you always tell me how you’re in the middle of projects and you don’t have time to workout.
  • 13. Photo credits: domi-san But this week – no more excuses! I challenge you to come on a hike with me on South Mountain this Saturday at 9am for about 1 hour! Whaddya say?
  • 14. Photo credits: domi-san Not only will hiking reduce your blood pressure, give you more energy and reduce the stress from workdays. But I know how you like the outdoors – plus we can use the time for father-daughter chats.
  • 15. FINAL NOTE
