  • 1. Growing Pains: The 5-50 Journey of Startups Sanjay Mehta
  • 2. An Exciting Time…
    • Breaking out from that garage, finally..
    • Beyond the cozy comfort of the 5 founders and their man-Friday..
    • But a little awkward too..
    • Beyond the comfort zone now..
    • Never sure if you are doing the right thing..
    • Sounds like adolescence? Yes, there are similarities 
  • 3. First..all the WRONG reasons!
    • Because you raised some angel funds and you don’t know where else to spend
    • Because your competitors are ‘bigger’
    • Because you want to keep a good bench for work that may come in later
    • Because you want specialists for all jobs: Chief Mail Delivery Clerk, Chief Tea Fetching Officer, etc.!
    • Because you are missing your golf games
  • 4. The Right Reasons…
    • Business is growing, people are required
    • You only have 24 hours in your day
    • You don’t want to be the venture’s bottleneck
    • There is a window of opportunity, you can’t wait and watch
    • A bench WILL be useful
    • Cash flows available to support the growth
    • Nothing ventured, nothing gained!!
  • 5. Kind of team you need..
    • Your hire need not be the brightest / best (not the dumbest and cheapest either!!)
    • Cultural fit is far more important
    • These are missionary times!
    • It’s a journey with unknown destination; take those who will be good co-passengers, not just destination focused
    • Mismatch can be the biggest disaster
    • Entrepreneurial mindset is a huge plus
  • 6. Other Hiring Issues
    • Outsourcing vs Hiring
    • 4 to 49 direct reportees??! Go beyond just a battery of soldiers
    • Key recruits – almost like founders; take your time in bringing them in
    • Go after the right person, if you need to
    • Remember, you are not stopping at 50 – are you building the foundation for 500?
  • 7. What the employee’s looking for
    • What’s the key concern? Stability!
    • Having fun vs Getting bored
    • Building a business vs a piece of code
    • Show that bigger picture time and again
    • Salary and perks unlikely to be the draw, ESOPs may have no value at that point – revenue share or similar incentives help
    • Induction of managers, team very critical
  • 8. Some very critical factors
    • Salaries need to be paid on time!
    • Incentives to be paid without asking
    • Entrepreneur / founder remains accessible
    • Do not lose your early flock, as far as possible
    • Keep sharing good news – tone down bad!
    • “We shall make it” – reinforce the idea
    • Celebrate successes, small ones as well
  • 9. Thank you… Speaking of hiring, we are..!! Social Media careers anyone? Write in to [email_address]  Sanjay Mehta Jt. CEO, Social Wavelength Twitter: @sm63
