  7. 7. Energy consumption by ICT–  About 2% of all carbon equivalents w-w (Gartner 2008)–  About 10% of electricity in Switzerland (Bernard Aebischer, ETHZ 2008)–  Up to 50% of electricity in compute intensive financial services companies (Green IT SIG members)But....–  Only 1-2% of ICT cost including staff   Digital  Trends  2011   Athens          05.12.2011   7
  8. 8. ICT Impact on energy savingsThe Climate Group2008:ICT can reduce annualglobal CO2 emissionsby about 15% by 2020and deliver energyefficiency savings toglobal business of overEuro 500 Bio Digital  Trends  2011   Athens          05.12.2011   8
  9. 9. Direct and indirect cost savings •  Direct savings of ICT cost –  Energy –  Hardware and Software –  Selling heat •  Indirect savings (more relevant) –  Personnel dependent –  Overall efficiency efforts –  Other departments (Green by IT)   Holistic approach needed   Digital  Trends  2011   Athens          05.12.2011   9

Printing printers on standby during the work day, switched off at Are ✔ night?5.2 Are printer drivers set on black & white default values?5.3 Is mainly recycling paper being used? ✔5.4 Are empty toner modules being collected for reuse? ✔5.5 Is duplex printing the norm? ✔ §  Recyclingpaper §  379 Printer centralization5.6§  §  Are primarily multi-function printers used? 380 389 Duplex print Toner disposal §  391 Color printing §  393 Power-off workstations5.7§  §  Is printer centralization being enforced? 398 399 Declaration of social sustainability Social sustainability of providers §  404 Products with energy labels §  409 Multifunction products5.8§  Are printers with separated toner and development units 412 Ecological production ✔ §  §  being preferred? 419 423 Switched off standby mode printers Toner unit separate from development unit Digital  Trends  2011   Athens          05.12.2011   14
  15. 15. Action Digital  Trends  2011   Athens          05.12.2011   15
  16. 16. Action for Color Print management Color prints •  Color prints are more material and energy intensive than black and white prints. In most of the print drivers the default values are set for color printing even if this is not always needed. The default values should therefore be set for black and white printing. Color printing then needs a conscious change of the default value. Impact of actions Energy savings Up to 25% Cost savings more than 50% Ecology average improvements •  Color prints need less energy than black & white ones •  Color toner is more expensive than black & white one •  Grey energy will be reduced •  Recycling effort will be reduced Effort of actions Planning 0-3 months Initial investments negligible •  This task can be immediately implemented •  Changes in the print drivers are small Digital  Trends  2011   Athens          05.12.2011   16
  17. 17. Most relevant cost saversData Center Other ICT areas•  It‘s all about cooling: •  In IT –  Cold and hot housing –  Thin clients / Virtualization –  Increase room temperature –  Power management –  Housing of server racks –  Printer centralization –  Free cooling –  Multifunction printers –  Variable air speed fans –  Procurement including full PLC –  Water cooling –  Selling of Heat •  By IT –  Video conferencing •  Operational efficiency –  Working from home –  Server consolidation –  Energy management systems –  Retire server with (almost) no activity –  Workflow streamlining –  Etc. –  Building management –  Etc.   Digital  Trends  2011   Athens          05.12.2011   17
  18. 18. Quick wins–  Identify high impact and low cost actions •  Turn off PC at night •  Default values PCs, Drivers, etc.–  Inform and educate •  Discussion circles •  Posters •  Routine part of management–  Organize for Green IT actions •  Involve/educate management •  Assign Green IT champion •  Measure electricity and report on it–  Get Green ICT goals into yearly objectives                                Lead by example, behaviour, incentives  Digital  Trends  2011   Athens          05.12.2011   18
