Letter from the Minister
Dear All,
I am going to begin this month with a verse from
Isaiah: “See, I am sending my messenger ahead of
you, who will prepare your way.”
The Good News of the Gospel always begins with a messenger, whether
an angel whispering in Mary’s ear or a parent telling a child a story. The
Good News is always beginning somewhere in the world, for those with
ears to hear and hearts to go wherever the way may lead.
The Good News begins in this church every time we have a Baptism,
every time we have a wedding; at every meeting of Messy Church, at
each and every Sunday Service the Good News is told and heard.
The Good News begins again every time we mention our church outside in
the community, when we tell someone of what happens in the church and
the difference it makes in the lives of those who hear the Good News.
We are a church of Good News, we are a church who looks to share that
Good News with others, and we are God’s church in this place.
God sends us out to be messengers, going ahead of the Good News with
the invitation to others to come and hear, come and be part of the
wonderful Good News as we work to share God’s love with all. For the
more people that hear the wonderful news of God’s love, the more we
can spread God’s love in our neighbourhood.
God isn’t asking us to give up our lives on the cross; God is asking us to
use our lives to spread the wonder of His great love. And that we can
do.
We can be messengers, we can be angels, and we can spread the Good
News, because God’s Holy Spirit is with us always giving us courage and
encouragement.
So smile, spread the Good News! In Jesus’ name.

The Burglar
---------
A burglar broke into a house and found himself in the lounge.
Suddenly a voice in the dark said “Jesus is watching you”
several times.
Shining his torch around, the burglar saw a parrot in a cage
and asked if it was called Jesus.
“No”, replied the parrot. “My name is Mephistopheles. Jesus is
the Rottweiler”.

In Memory of William Stewart Michie
1939 - 2014
‘Dad'
Dad was born in Edinburgh on the 4th September 1939, the day after war was
declared! As a child Dad attended James Gillespies Prep School before
moving on to George Heriots School. As a young boy starting there he could
not possibly have foreseen the impact the institution would have on his life. It
is safe to say my father was a Herioter to the core and was actively involved
in the school until the day he died. As a former pupil he was involved in Old
Boys teams particularly rugby and latterly as President of the London Heriot
Club in the Caledonian Club in Knightsbridge. His dedication to his school
was a vital part of who he was.
After school Dad went on to study Mechanical Engineering at the Heriot Watt
and worked for many years at Brown Brothers before moving to Wheyway
Watson, the company that ultimately brought us to Beckenham. This period in
his life was busy in terms of career pathway and where we lived. We
averaged a move every year or so for about 3 years until in 1980 we arrived
in Beckenham. Very early on in our arrival we visited Hayes Free Church as
part of a search for a new place of worship. After one visit Mum and Dad
decided they need look no further, and so began Dads' commitment to this
church. This was always a deep commitment about which Dad felt very
strongly.
Dads' rugby days might have been over but he pretty soon joined West Kent
Golf Club and juggled the stresses of working life with the relaxation and
enjoyment of a round of golf. It provided a retreat from the intensity of
responsibility from his business.
As Dad headed towards retirement age he wound down over a few years in
anticipation of the excitement and complete change of pace that
retirement would bring. As a father who was often absent due to work
Kenneth , Susie and I did wonder what on earth he would do without a job.
However we need not have feared for him, he took to retirement like a duck
to water! His days were filled with plenty of golf, studying theology, preparing
sermons and being a grandfather who was ever present for his grandchildren.
'Papa' was more hands on than we had ever anticipated and seemed
besotted with his grandchildren. Mum and Dad indulged their wanderlust
and spent their precious time traveling far and wide, and thank goodness
they did. Wherever Dad went it seemed his watercourse were not far behind.
Dad touched very many people in his life in the various roles he had. This was
evident, no more so, than at his Memorial Service. We would like to thank all
of those who attended and for the kindness and support we have felt in the
last few weeks.

Do you remember as a child
singing this song, perhaps at a
Sunday School?
Jesus loves me! This I know
For the Bible tells me so
Little ones to Him belong
They are weak, but He is strong.
Yes, Jesus loves me
Yes, Jesus loves me
Yes, Jesus loves me
The Bible tells me so.
Jesus loves me! He who died
Heaven's gate to open wide
He will wash away my sin
Let His little child come in.
Jesus loves me! He will stay
Close beside me all the way
Thou hast bled and died for me
I will henceforth live for Thee.
It’s been on my mind recently and
I wonder if sometime we can sing
it but in my amended version!
Jesus loves me! This I know
For the Bible tells me so
Older ones to Him belong
We are weak, but He is strong.
Yes, Jesus loves me
Yes, Jesus loves me
Yes, Jesus loves me
The Bible tells me so.
Jesus loves me! He who died
Heaven's gate to open wide
He will wash away my sin
Let the older ones come in.
Jesus loves me! He will stay
Close beside me all the way
He has bled and died for me
I will now His follower be
Brenda.
I would like to thank all those who have sent cards and letters,
flowers and chocolates, good wishes and prayers.
Your understanding and patience has been very much
appreciated, and I look forward to getting on with things!
My thanks to you all.

Following the recent announcement from First Milk to delay payments
to farmers , the Arthur Rank Centre is calling on churches to pray for
and support dairy farmers.
“The number of dairy farmers has
halved over little more than a
decade,” said Arthur Rank
Centre CEO Jerry Marshall.
“Prices are at their lowest since
2007 while costs have risen 36%.
On top of this, the recent
announcement by First Milk that
they are delaying payments by
two weeks, presents significant
cash flow difficulties to their
suppliers.“
“British Dairy farmers are facing
an exceptionally difficult time so we are calling on churches to pray
for the industry, said Revd Elizabeth Clark, National Rural Officer for
the Methodist Church and the United Reformed Church. “Give
thanks for the vital food that dairy farmers produce, pray for those
struggling because of the present low prices and pray especially for
those farmers who sell their milk to First Milk whose pay cheques
have been delayed.”
“Churches can also support the industry by buying British dairy
products,” said Canon Dr Jill Hopkinson, National Rural Officer for the
Church of England. “When buying milk, butter, cheese and yoghurt
look for the red tractor logo which tells you it is a British product.
Church members could also show their support through choosing to
buy milk from supermarkets that pay a fair price to farmers.
Visithttp://www.nfuonline.com/back-british-farming/news-
channel/how-can-i-support-british-dairy-farmers/ to find out how.”
Prayer
Loving God we give you thanks for all the food that is produced for us
by farmers every day. We thank you especially for milk, a vital food,
which we don’t always fully appreciate. We pray for dairy farmers
and the particular pressures that they face at this present time. We
remember farmers under pressure because of low prices and late
milk payments, may they know the peace of your presence. May
we consumers never take our food for granted and may we value
and support those who work tirelessly to feed us. This we ask in Jesus
name, Amen.

EATING IN THE UK IN THE FIFTIES
* Bananas and oranges only appeared at Christmas time.
* The only vegetables known to us were spuds, peas, carrots and
cabbage.
* All crisps were plain; the only choice we had was whether to put
the salt on or not.
* Condiments consisted of salt, pepper, vinegar and brown sauce if
we were lucky.
* Soft drinks were called pop.
* Coke was something that we put on the fire.
* A Chinese chippy was a foreign carpenter.

25 THE ANNUNCIATION OF OUR LORD TO THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY
The Feast of St. Joseph is in Western Christianity the principal feast day
of Saint Joseph, husband of the Blessed Virgin Mary. He is the step-
father of Jesus of Nazareth/Jesus Christ. It has the rank of a solemnity
in the Roman Catholic Church; Catholics who follow the Missal of
1962 celebrate it as a first class feast. It is a feast or commemoration
in the provinces of the Anglican Communion, and a feast or festival in
the Lutheran Church. It is also Father's Day in some Catholic countries,
mainly Spain, Portugal, and Italy.

Joseph of Nazareth
Invitation to Confession
Hear the words of the angel to Joseph: ‘You shall call his name Jesus,
for he will save his people from their sins.’ Therefore let us seek the
forgiveness of God through Jesus the Saviour of the world.
cf Matthew 1.21
Kyrie Confession
Lord, you are gracious and compassionate:
Lord, have mercy.
Lord, have mercy.
You are loving to all and your mercy is over all your creation:
Christ, have mercy.
Christ, have mercy.
Your faithful servants bless your name
and speak of the glory of your kingdom:
Lord, have mercy.
Lord, have mercy.

God our Father, who from the family of your servant David raised up
Joseph the carpenter to be the guardian of your incarnate Son and
husband of the Blessed Virgin Mary: give us grace to follow him in
faithful obedience to your commands; through Jesus Christ your Son
our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and forever.
The Annunciation
Anglicised from the Latin Vulgate Luke 1:26-39 Annuntiatio nativitatis
Christi, also referred to as the Annunciation to the Blessed Virgin Mary,
the Annunciation of Our Lady or Annunciation of the Lord, is the
Christian celebration of the announcement by the angel Gabriel to
the Virgin Mary that she would conceive and become the mother of
Jesus, the Son of God, marking his Incarnation. Gabriel told Mary to
name her son Jesus, meaning "Saviour". Many Christians observe this
event with the Feast of the Annunciation on 25 March, nine full
months before Christmas, the ceremonial birthday of Jesus.
Approximating the northern vernal equinox, the date of the
Annunciation also marked the New Year in many places, including
England, where it is called Lady Day. Both the Roman and Orthodox
Catholic Churches hold that the Annunciation took place at
Nazareth, but differ as to the precise location. The Basilica of the
Annunciation marks the site preferred by the former, while the Greek
Orthodox Church of the Annunciation marks that preferred by the
latter.

FYI
The photographs which appeared on page 19 and the back cover of
February’s edition of Catalyst were taken from Canonbie Road,
Forest Hill and within 100 yards of one another.
The views across London and Kent from this area often caused me to
stop and enjoy the scene on my commute to / from work.

24. Final Thought
1) We are students of a Master who is
teaching day by day — a God whose
Son shows everyone the Truth, the Life,
the Way. He speaks to each one
clearly - if we would be aware, with
words that help to build our lives and
those with whom we share.
2) When we find ourselves unsure of what
our purpose is in life it's God that gives
it meaning and dispels our inward
strife; in following His footsteps
discernment can be found to help us
make decisions that will turn our lives
around.
3) Generosity we learn of and integrity as
well; the need to quit from lying and
the ways we would rebel; in quiet
contemplation — Christ's love shown
on the tree; compassion and
contentment comes — in mind to set
us free!
