Problems of the Muslim world in 21st century and
Prospects of Muslim renaissance
In the twenty first century the Muslim world is passing through a very
challenging and crucial situation. We will face countless problems in the
near future and we have to fight for our survival. There are
multidimensional external attacks as well as internal challenges in the
Muslim world. The Muslim world is under cultural raid and very fatal
conspiracies. In order to know about the problems of the Muslims, it is
necessary to look briefly at some of the aspects of physical and
demographic profile of the Muslim world
Area and population of Muslim world
The Muslim world represents one fifth of the humanity occupying a
global land mass spreading over 57 countries. It represents 23% of
world population. The birth rate in Muslim world is 3.4%. about 80% of
Muslim population is living in Muslim countries and the rest in the non-
Muslim countries.
DEFENSE
The Muslim world is very weak as far as their defense is concerned due
to low literacy rate and short of science and technology. In this case they
cannot compete with the western world. Most of the Muslim countries
look to the west for their defense. Total army of the Muslim world is 67
lacks. Although the Muslim world spends almost 76 billion dollars on
defense but they are still unable to resist aggression from the west.
Militarily, the Muslims are not only dependent on the West; they are
helplessly caught in its grip. Despite all the expenditure on defense, they
have not been able to even face the threat that has been hammering at
the doors of the Arab and Muslim World for over 50 years in the form of
small state of Israel.
Education
2. It is one of joint features of Muslim world that they are backward in
education. A very small portion of the national budget is allocated to
education. The Muslim world spends less than 4% of their GDP on
education. OIC countries are home to some 650 universities. Japan in
comparison has more than 1000 universities Tokyo alone has 120
universities. The Muslim world spend only 0.5% on R&D while the non
Muslim world spend 5% on R&D.
Economy trade and industry
The Muslim world is well rich in economic resources playing a vital in
world economy. It has 70% of world oil resources and nearly 50% of
world natural resources. The Muslim world occupies 45% of world
agricultural land and has a well developed river system to irrigate it.
Average per capita income in the European countries is 24000
dollarsThe figure of the Muslim countries is bellow 10000 dollars.
Despite of these statistics it is very unfortunate that the Muslim world
represent only 5% of world GNP. The share of Muslim world in global
revenue is only a meager 7.5%.The other aspect of demographic profile
of the Muslim world like employment Health etc also shows a grim
picture.
Problems of the Muslim world in 21st centaury
Today the whole world is facing anarchy and is full of disturbances.
Being part of the world Muslim ummah faces the same situation rather it
would not be wrong to say that the Muslim world faces greater problems
and difficulties than the rest of the world. One of the basic reasons of all
the problems of Muslim ummah is associating Islam and musalman with
those people who want disturb peace of the world and spread anarchy.
The problems of Muslims are not only because of these baseless
blames but also because of internal weakness which has brought the
whole ummah on the brink of collapse.
Identity of Muslim ummah
It is a common perception that Islam is a religion of terror brutality and
violence and that every Muslim is terrorist. The identity of Muslim
ummah has been made doubtful but the fact is that Islam is a religion of
peace and protection. Is this the history Muslim that terrorism has
become his identity? No this is not the case. This is all because of
internal weakness of Muslims. They have preferred this world at the cost
3. of Islam teaching. Islam declares the whole of the Muslims as one and
single ummah and not nations. Every person is part of Muslim ummah
who has a living belief in God and Holy prophet (PBUH).The problem of
Muslim ummah is that it has become nation’s ad not milt. From here we
started losing our identity and it reached its peak when we lost our
fundamentals the holy Quran and sunnah. It is a basic principle whoever
loses his basic belief he is unable to sustain his identity. The Muslims if
want to regain their identity they will have to resort to their fundamentals.
Lack of unity and co-operation
Muslim ummah has divided into segments .The situation is that the
Muslim of Asia has no concern with the Muslim of Europe. Whenever we
talk about ummah we put more emphasis on their economic disparity
poverty ignorance dictatorships and so on but if look deeply divisions
and disunity among the Muslim ranks is one of the basic issues of
Muslim ummah. They have more than fifty percent of the world
resources one sixth population of the world having a total of about sixty
seven lack army and the total defense budget of Muslim Ummah is
almost seventy six billion dollars but still it is defeated nation. There is a
difference between Islam and other religions an American Christian is
different from an American Christian. A German is German first and then
he is Christian’s FRENCH CHRISTIAN IS SUPERIOR TO AN Australian
Christian. But if a Black Muslim comes from Africa a red from Palestine
and a wheat color Muslim from India first he is a Muslim and then an
Indian. He considers the whole of the Muslim world his own.
Terrorism
One of the serious issues of present times, which involves many
dimensions, is the increase in global terrorism, which has resulted in the
killing of thousands of people, including Muslims, in which Muslims are
prominently involved and which is legitimized in the name of jihad.
western thought heavily influenced by the medieval Christian crusades
has always portrayed jihad as an Islamic war against unbelievers. But
essentially jihad is the inner struggles of muslin to become a better
human being improve himself and his community. Quran prescribes
“fight in the way of Allah with those who fight against you but begin not
hostilities .lo: Allah loveth not aggressors”. We understand that any
terrorist actions without provocation are unwarranted.
Economic challenges of Ummah
4. Nineteenth century was a century of political pressure in which the
western nations made most of the Asian and African nations their
slaves. In the twenty centaury most of these nations got independence
from western imperialism. The recovery of political sovereignty from
European rule has not at all weakened the influence of Western culture.
On the contrary, under the slogan of “economic development”, the
westernization of Asia and Africa continues to progress at an ever-accelerating
speed. This is why the Muslim ummah is unable to enjoy
completely the fruits of independence. Now in the twenty first centaury
the Muslim are dreaming of real independence and gaining a
respectable position in the comity of nations and may live their lives
according to Quran and Sunah. To change these dreams into reality an
honest action and struggle will be needed a struggle even bigger than
we did for our political independence. The poor economic conditions of
the Muslim world is because of their dependence on other countries.
Most of the Muslim countries take loans from the rich countries of the
west. There are some Muslim countries which do not take loans for
developmental projects but rather to meet their daily expenses and more
worrying is the fact that some of the countries take loans just to repay
the interest on their previous loans due to which their burden of debts
increases and hence economic dependency. Reliance on external debts
has plagued the economy of most of the Muslim states. It has killed the
honor and courage of Muslims .There is no denying the fact that the
donors give loans on their own conditions. Having no other option the
poor states take the loans on humiliating conditions. These conditions
keep them in pressures all the time and stop those taking actions in
public interest. In short to rely economically on others has very serious
consequences which results in destroying the economy of a country.
Lack of realist thinking
Most devastating to our cause are those o who escape from a
practicable and realistic solution of present day problems by over
glorifying the past, entirely overlooking the fact that the most extravagant
praise of the achievements of Muslims a thousand years ago, provides
no guarantee that the Islamic community will flourish in the future. These
well meaning people always speak in praise of our Holy Prophet and his
companions, never tiring of rejoicing in the superiority of the “noble
spiritual principles of Islam” coupled with a most vituperative
condemnation of the “materialistic West” as if their effusive verbalism
5. would automatically result in a beautiful Islamic utopia without any
further effort needed on their part!
Globalization
In the name of promotion of liberalization, privatization, market economy
and modernization, the domination of Western norms, value-systems of
life, socioeconomic institutions, and finally, political and economic
interest is being established over the length and breadth of the world.
This is separate question whether globalization is a blessing or a curse.
It provides some opportunities for the Muslim world but it is unable to
cash them. IN this age of globalization, along with the state players,
three other powerful actors are working actively, which are:
a) The multinational corporations,
b) The international NGOs and
c) The media.
The renaissance of Muslim ummah
However bleak the prospect for an Islamic renaissance may appear at
present, it still maintains that there yet remains considerable hope for us
provided we take the appropriate action.. This ray of optimism is based
on the following assumptions;
1. The fundamental sources of Islam --- the Quran and the Sunnah ---
are uncorrupted and intact. There is no other religion in the world that
can claim this advantage.
2. Islam is a complete religion covering every aspect of life. As Islamic
teachings are comprehensive, Islam does not tolerate any compromise
with any culture in conflict with its principles. Islam alone provides
complete guidance for life in its totality. It is a unique feature of Islam
that not only tells its followers what to do but also tells how to do it.. The
teachings of all other religions are limited, restricted.
3. The determination to preserve and propagate Islam in its original
purity has been practically implemented in every period of Islamic history
simultaneously in every Muslim country by a long series of Mujaddids
and ulemmas. Although with the support and encouragement of Western
scholars and politicians, the modernists and the liberals attempt to force
6. their distorted interpretation of Islam upon the entire community, this is a
good sign that they are encountering stiff resistance on every side from
those who are not deceived by this hypocrisy and are determined to
preserve an unadulterated Islam intact.
4. From Morocco to Indonesia the overwhelming majority want Islam and
once inspiring leadership is produced, they will be ready to follow most
enthusiastically.
