OVERVIEW
• Humans are limited in their capacity to process
information Implication for design.
• Information is received and responses given via a
number of input and output channels:
– visual channel
– auditory channel
– haptic channel
– movement
• Information is stored in memory:
– sensory memory
– short-term (working) memory
– long-term memory.

• Designing usable systems is not simply a matter of altruism
towards the user, or even marketing; it is increasingly a
matter of law.
• It should be safe with the standard of National Health and
Safety.
• The computer should be designed as:
- that it is suitable for the task
- it is easy to use and, where appropriate, adaptable to
the user’s knowledge and experience
- it provides feedback on performance
- it displays information in a format and at a pace that is
adapted to the user
- it conforms to the ‘principles of software ergonomics’.

WHAT IS HCI?
• Originally it was Man-machine Interaction
became Human-computer Interaction (1980)
because people work under the systems
computer.
• It is the root of establishing many disciplines and it
led to formation of the Ergonomics Research
Society in 1949 the study of people's efficiency in
their working environment.
• It became central concern involves the design,
implementation and evaluation of interactive
systems for each context of the user’s tasks and
work.

• Human or user : individual user, a group of users in
organization who are dealing with some part of the task or
process and use the technology.
• Computer: is the technology ranging form general desktop
computer to a large-scale computer system, a process control
system or an embedded system.
• Interaction: communication between a user and computer, it
can be direct or indirect. Direct indirect involves a dialog with
feedback and control throughout performance of the task;
involves batch processing or intelligent sensors controlling the
environment.
• The important thing is the user is interacting with the computer
to accomplish something.

Who is Involved in HCI?
• Multi-disciplines subject use computer to
interactive with the perceptual knowledge, cognitive
and problem-solving skills; ergonomics (study of
people’s efficiency in their working environment).
• Business people to be able to market the goods,
to produce graphic design, and others.
• Health care worker to do medical record.
• People who really need it.
The goal is to make people do their job easier,
practical and efficient.

Theory and HCI
• No general and unified theory of HCI.
• 3 most important outlines major issues:
1. the people,
2. the computers
3. the tasks
4. the system
There are 3 “use” for HCI:
1. Useful accomplish is required: play music, format
document or else.
2. Usable do it easily and naturally without danger of error,
etc.
3. Used make people want to use it such as attractive,
engaging, fun or else.
All of 4 give usability focus of
working.

So, what next?
• HCI should be designed of interactive systems
and the user interface in particular.
• It involves artistic skill and fortuitous insight
• Should be innovative and imaginative creations
and provide aesthetic pleasure sense of artistic.
• It makes for all of people in different discipline
subject.
• Should use the concept and development of
media in computer systems.
• Effective and efficient.
• More to friendly environment.
• Should be in curriculum of all subject of disciplines
