2. You‟re Next
PropsThe mask the character is wearing is of a
certain animal. It seems to be a dog/wolf
but is slightly difficult to determine due to
the amount of shadow cast by the mask
itself.
Overall ImageThe entire image looks run down and worn.
This is most likely to give it an uncared for
feel. The font also adds to this as it looks like
it has been done with haste and hasn‟t
been paid much attention to. The image
also give the connotation that the killers
within the film are quick with their „work‟.
The image is quite simple in terms of mise en
scene, as are the effects despite the fact it
looks like it took a lot of time to get it the
way it is now. There is also no billing block,
just a date and a few smaller words
underneath, most likely the producers and
so on.
Camera ShotThe camera shot is a mid close up, which
isn‟t too close to not be taken seriously, but
just close enough to help the audience feel
a sense of threat and unease.
ColourThe colours are particularly dim and
dreary, there is also a lot of shadowing
involved which gives it a mysterious and
eerie atmosphere. However, there is red
„blood‟ splattered onto the animal mask the
character is wearing which stands out
against the darker, more depressing colours.
Strapline“Did you remember to lock your door?” is a
rhetorical question in this case. It also makes
you think as to whether you have done the
action it is specifying, in case something
„bad‟ may happen (even though you know
nothing will, this is all fictional… hopefully)
FontThe font used looks like someone has
scratched the words into a certain type of
material, such as wood. It is jagged and not
very neat which connotes that it was done
in a rush or quickly, much like the way
someone would write if they wanted to
leave somewhere in a short space of time.
3. The Strangers
PropsEach of the three people facing towards
the camera are wearing different types of
masks. The males mask is more like a sack
with holes cut into it showing that he is
different from the two women either side of
him. The women are wearing more
delicate, doll-like masks which brings a
creepy and eerie atmosphere to the image
as dolls are usually more innocent and are
related to children, not murderers.
CostumeThe three masked people look as if they are
wearing normal clothing, although the male
character in the middle looks like his clothes
are a lot older and worn, this may be due to
the colour of them. The fact they are
wearing clothes anyone else would wear
gives the effect that these three could be
anyone.
FontThe blurred effect on the title of the film is
the same type of sight you would see if you
were looking at a light whilst crying/with
tears in your eyes. This gives the film a tense
and emotional atmosphere. The rest of the
typography on the image is in simple block
letters which stand out against the titles
font.
Strapline“Because You Were Home.” is the reasoning
behind the fact that these killers have
entered this home. This could also make the
audience feel unsafe and possibly paranoid
about being in their own home, which is
usually a place of safety and comfort.
ColourThe colours are also dim and dreary in this
image. They are mainly darker colours,
however, the woman to the right in the
mask is wearing a shade of pink. Despite the
fact it is pink it looks very worn and drab
compared to a nicer baby pink or hot pink.
The pink connotes innocence but is
juxtaposed by the true nature of the image,
this gives her a creepy feeling as a single
person which helps to bring the whole
atmosphere of the image to life.
ImageThe overall image is slightly unusual. There
are five people whereas in most well known
horror film posters there are normally only
one or two people. The three that look to
be the killers are facing towards the
camera. However the other two are facing
away from the camera, these two look like
the owners of the house. The fact that they
are not facing the camera gives the
impression that those two people could be
anyone. The brick wall behind them has no
windows, this give the feeling of no escape
to the audience.
4. fear dot com
ColourThe entire image is in different shades of
blue and white, making it simple and easy
to distinguish against other horror posters.
The strapline however, is in red, which
contrasts with the blue. The red gives
connotations of death and blood, giving
the idea that this is not a „pretty‟ film to
watch.
FontThe title of the film looks like it has been
written by a child, which gives the image a
creepy, slightly innocent atmosphere and
feel. The strapline is in a blocky font so the
audience notice it just as much as the rest
of the typography.
Billing BlockThe billing block on this image is quite small
compared to others. It is placed at the
bottom of the image so it is out of the way
and does not ruin the overall atmosphere of
the image.
ImageThe overall image is blurred and out of
focus, making it difficult to depict the image
clearly. This leaves the audiences
imagination to wander into the „unknown‟.
It also looks like an older computer monitor
compared to the nice hi-def ones we have
now, making it seem creepier. The
girl/woman/thing has very strange features
which are difficult to distinguish. One of the
eyes is larger than the other and the mouth
looks fake or „made‟ from something. The
rest of the image is darker so you don‟t
really know what it looks like below the
face, again leaving the audiences
imagination to wander and hopefully (for
the producers etc) create horrific scenarios
in their heads, maybe getting them excited
for the film or scaring them out of their wits.
Strapline“Want to see a really killer website? It‟s the
last you‟ll ever see.” the first sentence is a
rhetorical question, but also makes the
website more attractive and interesting. The
second sentence completely drops the
good mood and gives the idea that if you
go onto this specific website, you will die.
