4. If I don’t already have a library
card, I will need a piece of
identification that lists my current
address.
I can use a letter from where I
live, a letter or report card from
my school, or a bill.
5. I should bring the piece of
identification to the front desk and
ask a library staff member to make
a library card for me.
Those younger need their parent or
guardian sign the library card
though.
6. I can find items I want with the
help of the library catalogue.
7. The library catalogue
lists all the materials
that are owned by
the library.
It has materials like:
•Books
•Magazines
•DVDs
•Audiobook CDs
•Music CDs
8. To place items on
hold, I will need
to go to the
library catalogue.
There are library
catalogue
computers in the
library building.
9. I can also find the catalogue on the
library website at www.hpl.ca.
10. If I don’t know what I want to
borrow, I can browse Recently
Reviewed items.
11. I can also click on New Titles to
see lists of new books, music and
movies.
12. If I do know what I want, I can
type the title in the search bar at
the top of the screen.
13. I can narrow your search to books,
audiobook CDs, music CDs, DVDs, or
Blu-rays by clicking the boxes on the
left hand side of the screen.
14. When I find something I want to borrow,
I can see if it is already at the library by
clicking On the shelves now at:
15. If the item is at the library, it is available
to borrow. The Collection and Call # will
tell me where it is located in the library.
16. The Collection is a
section of materials
located together in
the library.
Some Collections
in the library are:
• Children’s Non-fiction
• Teen Fiction
• Adult Fiction DVD
• Fiction CD
17. Collections are
labeled in the
library with signs.
The signs can be
hanging above the
Collection or at the
end of a shelf.
18. The Call # then shows
you where to find the
item in the specific
Collection.
A fiction Call # is
normally made of
three letters that are
from the author’s last
name.
A non-fiction Call # is
normally made of both
numbers and letters.
19. The Call # will be on
the outside of the item
so that you can easily
find it on the shelf.
20. If the item I want is not at the library, I
will need to place a hold.
A hold will let me receive an unavailable
item as soon as it becomes available.
To place a hold, I need to ask a library
staff member for help.
21. I have now found an item that I
want!
If I placed a hold, the library will
contact me when it becomes
available.
