Perbedaan suhu tersebut disebabkan karena perbedaan sudut datangnya radiasi sinar matahari ke permukaan bumi, sehingga menurut garis lintangnya suhu di bumi dibedakan menjadi tropis, sub tropis, sedang dan dingin. Darrah-daerah yang bersuhu sama akan mempunyai bioma yang sama.
