  • I am a 59 year old African American Man that recently graduated from HCC with an Associates Degree in Applied Science for Art Advertising and Graphic Design. My specislty is painting abstract art. I have more that 25 pieces completed and have ideas for many more, the only problem is I'm a disabled veteran and can't afford additional supplies to continue my work, how do I apply for a grant to continue my work? Purpose of IAG Program <ul><li>New Works Fellowship Grants </li></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>Either Emerging Artist or Established Artist Fellowships. </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><li>IAG encourages the creation of new works and will give priority to applications that focus on the presentation of new works. </li></ul><ul><li>Through the Individual Artist Grant Program, Houston Arts Alliance aims to: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Recognize significant Houston artists and their contributions to the nonprofit arts sector and the community-at-large. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Support, encourage and nourish an environment for the growth and development of Houston artists. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Stimulate a greater public awareness of the arts in general and of artists in particular. </li></ul></ul>

Your Award Guidelines page 5 <ul><li>Your grant is distributed in 2 installments. </li></ul><ul><li>Before a payment is sent to you, you are required to complete the following: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Payment 1: an executed signed copy of the Grant Agreement, venue confirmation, approved proof of residency and a signed IRS W9 form. (April 2012) </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Payment 4: A final report- due within 45 days after the completion of the grant term (February 2013) </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><ul><li>If the Final Report is not submitted within 30 days of the deadline the final payment will be forfeited. </li></ul></ul></ul></ul>

General Eligibility Guidelines page 6 <ul><li>Applicants must have lived in the City of Houston for 24 consecutive months prior to the deadline. </li></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>Proof of residency is required. </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><li>Must be an artist (or team of artists) who is actively engaged in the creation of art. </li></ul><ul><li>Proposed use of grant funds must demonstrate a benefit to the tourism/convention and hotel industry. </li></ul><ul><li>Applicants who have received an HAA Individual Artist Grant within the past three years (July 1, 2008 - June 30, 2011) are ineligible . </li></ul><ul><li>Refer to page 6 of the guidelines for more eligibility. </li></ul>

Application Review Process Guidelines page 7 <ul><li>Staff Review </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Reviews for completeness, eligibility & residency. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Prepare documents for the Peer Panel Review. </li></ul></ul><ul><li>Peer Panel Review </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Objective and knowledgeable local & regional artists, arts professionals, arts educators and community members, evaluate each application. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>A blind review process </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>Review based on guidelines. </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>Use a 100 point system </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><li>Committee and Board Approval </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Review, finalize and approve funding recommendations of the Peer Panel. </li></ul></ul>

Funding Source Guidelines page 7 <ul><li>Houston Arts Alliance receives funding from the City of Houston through the Hotel Occupancy Tax (H.O.T.) of which a potion funds the IAG program. </li></ul><ul><li>Because the Individual Artist Grant Program is funded with Hotel Occupancy Tax funds, the funded activities must directly benefit tourism and the convention and hotel industry. </li></ul>

What Will Not Be Funded Guidelines page 9 <ul><li>Projects already funded by HAA. </li></ul><ul><li>Capital purchases of permanent or not expendable equipment. </li></ul><ul><li>Programs or Projects are completed and have already taken place. </li></ul><ul><li>Expenses associated with events happenings outside the City of Houston. </li></ul><ul><li>Purchasing of food, beverages or catering expenses. </li></ul><ul><li>Projects that do NOT have a public performance. </li></ul><ul><li>Refer to page 9 of the guidelines for more. </li></ul>

The New Works Fellowship Grants program accepts applications from artists of the following creative disciplines: Artistic Disciplines Guidelines page 10 Artistic Disciplines: Creative Writing [poetry, fiction, non-fiction, playwriting and screenplays] Choreography Visual, Craft, Sculptural, and Media Arts Music Composition Performance Art (Multi-Discipline)

Grant Categories Guidelines page 10 <ul><li>Emerging Artists </li></ul><ul><ul><li>$5,000 grant to support artists who have actively and continually pursued their profession for less than 3 years in their discipline. </li></ul></ul><ul><li>Established Artists </li></ul><ul><ul><li>$10,000 grant to support experienced artists with more than 3 years of professional experience in their discipline. </li></ul></ul><ul><li>To determine which category is right for you: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Base it on artistic accomplishments documented on your resume and in your artistic samples submitted. </li></ul></ul>

Selection Process & Criteria Guidelines page 11 <ul><li>Applications are reviewed using the following criteria weighted on a 100-point rating scale: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Artistic Merit (maximum of 60 points) </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Impact on Tourism (maximum of 25 points) </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Feasibility (maximum of 15 points) </li></ul></ul><ul><li>It is suggested to address these specific criteria when answering the narrative questions in your application. </li></ul>

Public Presentation of Work Guidelines page 11 <ul><li>Artists are required to present their work in a public venue before the end of the term. </li></ul><ul><li>A signed venue confirmation is required from each artist within the first quarter. </li></ul><ul><li>Artists are encouraged to identify a high visibility, public project site (venue), for the presentation of the new works. </li></ul>

Required Supplemental Materials (See Guidelines page 12-14) <ul><li>Proof of residency </li></ul><ul><li>Artist Resume or CV </li></ul><ul><li>Artist Statement (one page limit) </li></ul><ul><li>Artist bio (500 words max) </li></ul><ul><li>Website link </li></ul><ul><ul><li>NEW- All work samples must be housed on a website. </li></ul></ul><ul><li>A description sheet </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Provide a link to your website and descriptions corresponding to the work samples. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>If videos are included please note that only 3 minutes will be shown to panelists, please provide details on which 3 minutes you would prefer staff to concentrate on during the panel. </li></ul></ul><ul><li>Optional: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Published material about your work, no more than 3 (ex: press review, articles, etc.) </li></ul></ul><ul><li>Items will be copied and distributed to the panel members </li></ul><ul><li>prior to their meeting. </li></ul>Due: December 12, 2011 by 5:00 p.m.

Helpful Information <ul><li>Approximately 20-25 artists are funded each round from 65-75 applications received. </li></ul><ul><li>Artists are now required to post their work samples online. </li></ul><ul><ul><li>If you have any questions about this new policy please contact the staff. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>If you do not have your own website consider using these free websites: www.blogger.com; www.youtube.com; http://wordpress.com; https://sites.google.com/ and http://www.myblogsite.com. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>In you application include instructions on how to view/find your work on the website you provide. </li></ul></ul>

Helpful Information (Continued) <ul><li>We strongly recommend that you “cut-and-paste” from a word-processing program to check for grammatical and spelling errors and word count. </li></ul><ul><li>For a quicker response, correspondence with HAA staff by e-mail not via phone. </li></ul><ul><li>Grantees are required to attend an orientation in March, 2012. </li></ul><ul><li>All grantees are required to credit the City of Houston and HAA in all publicity and printed materials using a very specific credit line: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>“ [Artist Name] is a recipient of an Individual Artist Grant Award. This grant is funded by the City of Houston through Houston Arts Alliance.” </li></ul></ul><ul><li>Recipients are responsible for any tax declarations on the grant awards as applicable. </li></ul>
