2. Background
HISTORY
Spinal Injury Hospital founded in 1944
As Rehabilitation Center for World war II victims of
Spinal Injury by a Charity group
Government took over in 1963
Now under MOMS
3. Mandate of NSIH
Provision of Specialized health care to persons with
Spinal injury
These include;
1.Rehabilitative: physiotherapy, occupational,
psychological, social therapies
2. Medical, nursing, surgical
3. preventive: health education to the public
4. Sources
Allocation from Central government cares for up to
20% (some equipments and salaries)
The FIF funds collected caters for consumables and
utilities which is 30%
The shortfall is mobilized through public private
partnerships
5. Challenges
Resources allocated by government are scanty
Cost of treating a Spinal Injured patient are huge:
initial care KSh.300,000 to KSh500,000
Being the only spinal injury hospital in Kenya, NSIH
has a long waiting time for admission. Bed capacity 30
Patients admitted late with complications have
increased cost of care.
Need to improve infrastructure, equipment and
training to improve efficiency.
6. Initiatives to Bridge Gaps
1. Public private partnerships PPP
2. Provision of Other services using available staff and
equipment to generate funds
3. Mobilizing spinal patients and community to
register for NHIF
7. Some of Achievements
1. Building and equipping of laboratory, laundry and
workshop (Safaricom and GOK)
2. Building and equipping Physiotherapy unit (Merali
group and GOK)
3. Refurbishment of patients wards, kitchen and
nursing offices (Rotary and local banks)
4. Building power house (Power technics)
5. Building of operation theatre (Vohra Sarova)

18. Going forward
Continue to mobilize resources to build 3 New spinal
hospitals out of Nairobi.
To start Patient follow up outreach compaign to
improve on their survival and integration in society.
To sensitize insurance companies and motorist to
allocate a percentage of premium for patient care in
case accident occurs.
