  • 3. Virtualizing exchangeWhy are customers so interested?• Virtualization is a long-standing technology with its roots in IBM’s mainframe OS/360• Exchange 2010 virtualization is fully supported by Microsoft• Customers believe that Exchange virtualization can give them Better utilization of their hardware with fewer wasted cycles More operational flexibility Better disaster recovery and more uptime Lower acquisition and operating costs• But there are many traps for the unwary… HP Confidential3 © Copyright 2012 Hewlett-Packard Development Company, L.P. • 4. Dedicated exchange“Dedicated” is usually a positive word…• Dedicated exchange is most familiar to customers across the size spectrum and verticals• Often perceived as easier to plan, deploy, and operate than virtualized environments• Familiar, given decades of experience with dedicated on-premises collaboration services• But its cost structure is coming under increasing pressure from virtualized and cloud environments… HP Confidential4 © Copyright 2012 Hewlett-Packard Development Company, L.P. • 5. Hosted exchangeThe future of the cloud looks pretty sunny…• Hosted e-mail dates at least back to the dates of TYMNET and CompuServe But only fairly recently has hosted functionality caught up with on-prem• Hosting offers terrific flexibility, predictable costs, and freedom from many of the common concerns of Exchange administrators Scalability / performance, availability, etc. are the hoster’s problem Still need to think about security, access to the hosting system, etc.• Hosting also means you are making a bet: is the hosting provider’s operational maturity and capability at least as good as your own?• Many organizations still have control issues… HP Confidential5 © Copyright 2012 Hewlett-Packard Development Company, L.P.
