  • Take control of power and cooling predicting, measuring, and controlling power Forecasting Measuring Controlling • Accurate (+/- 5%) • Accurate (+/- 3%) real-time •CPU throttling – 12%- power sizer tool power usage of blades, 25% typical savings (iLO fans, power supplies select) • Datacenter power • Inflow and outflow capacity analysis and temperatures • Thermal Power capping recommendations based on actual • Thermal output (Btu/hr) • Dynamic Power Capping consumption (1H08) • Historical trending • Estimated savings 310W Cap – no performance impact 290W Cap – minimal performance impact 11 December 6 2008
  • Enclosure Dynamic Power Capping • The power used by an individual server can be capped − The cap can be set below the peak − If the computational load requires more power than the cap, performance will be constrained. • Power usage varies by load. − A server at idle may draw 40-50% less than at peak load. − Aggregate power usage (for a group) is less than the sum of the peaks • Enclosure Dynamic Power Capping: − Allows you to apply a cap (power budget) to a group of servers. − The power budget applies to the group. − Busy servers “borrow” power usage rights from idle servers. − Each server gets enough to deliver the necessary performance − The aggregate power usage is maintained within the budget 11 December 7 2008
  • Power as a resource • Measure server power consumption • Cap servers based on measurements • Workload changes with time • Change the power caps − Busy servers get more power − Idle servers get less

  • Too many cables or too many switches and everyone gets in the act… Server Administrator MAC addr Network Administrator • Pass-through modules can HBA NIC A LAN drown you Switch ENET in cables WWN HBA NIC B • Switches work great but can overwhelm Storage Administrator in numbers HBA NIC C Switch SAN FC • LANs & SANs must HBA NIC follow the moving Spare server, requiring effort from everyone and Blade Enclosure delaying resolution 11 December 11 2008
  • HP Virtual Connect Build IT Change-Ready Server Administrator • Reduces cables without adding switches to manage Network Administrator • No new FC domains A LAN Maintains end-to-end connections HP Virtual Connect Modules • of your favorite brands (Cisco, Nortel, Brocade, McData, etc.) • Cleanly separates Server from B LAN & SAN • Relieves LAN & SAN admins from server maintenance Storage Administrator Servers are Change-Ready C • add, move, replace, upgrade SAN without affecting LAN or SAN − MAC & WWN are locally administered so LAN & SAN Spare connections stay constant • Change servers when your Blade Enclosure business needs it, not when you can fit it into everyone’s calendar 11 December 12 2008
  • Virtual Connect Ethernet modules may be ‘stacked’ Any server NIC can access any data center uplink 10GE ports still available as • 4 enclosures, Virtual Connect Ethernet Modules additional stacking links or data center uplinks 64 servers in Virtual Connect Domain • every server in domain has access to any LAN connected to domain • every server has fault-tolerant access to every uplink port • with this stacking method, every Virtual Connect module still has 8 -1GbE and 1 -10GbE uplink ports available 10 GbE Internal Cross-Connect c-Class Enclosure 11 December 13 2008

  • FLEX-10 © 2008 Hewlett-Packard Development Company, L.P. The information contained herein is subject to change without notice
  • HP Virtual Connect with Flex-10 technology is the simplest, most powerful connection to your networks • Simplify networks − Reduce cables up to 94% without adding switches to manage • Simplify server connections − Makes system administrator self-sufficient and frees LAN and SAN admins from common server tasks • Change servers in minutes, not days − Add, move and replace servers on-the-fly without affecting your LAN and SAN − Total control to move workloads fast without impacting LANs or SANs or the people who manage them. • Tailor network speeds based on application needs New! − Reduce cables and network components by using up to 4 physical NIC's per 10Gb server connection − Control and manage your bandwidth by setting NIC speeds at the server edge
  • HP Innovation HP Virtual Connect Flex-10 10Gb Ethernet Module • First single-wide blade10Gb Ethernet Module • First to divide a single network port into 4 separate connections with full hardware performance • First to fine tune each network connection dynamically from 100Mb to 10Gb. • First to optimize performance to the demands of virtual server workloads and network channels • First to support up to 24 network connections on a single half height server blade • First extension of HP’s award winning Virtual Connect architecture and the first to be built-in to a server blade.
  • Divide and Fine Tune • What is “Flex-10” technology? − Two components: • 10Gb Server NIC’s that can be carved into multiple individual FlexNIC’s − Each FlexNIC is recognized by server ROM as an individual NIC. − The Bandwidth for each FlexNIC is user defined from 100Mb to 10Gb. • HP Virtual Connect Flex-10 10Gb Ethernet Module − The first and only Interconnect Module that manages the server connections to the data center network − Recognizes and manages each FlexNIC as part of a server profile
  • Flexible NIC Technology • Evolve to 10Gb at your own speed − Flex-10 10Gb NIC's are PCI Physical Function devices − OS independent − Server ROM recognizes them as individual NIC's − Speeds can be set per NIC from 100Mb to 10Gb in 100Mb increments Server Server E 2.5Gb E 1.75Gb E E E E E E E E E E E E E E E E E 250Mb E 5.5Gb 1Gb LOM Dual NIC Quad NIC 10Gb LOM
