  • Eddy and Woglom or Why the Eddy Kite is a Parakite The Eddy Kite as it is known today: a: tailless b: 2 sticks of (nearly) equal length c: sticks crossing at 18 to 20 % of length d: cross stick bowed or dihedral (~10 % of wingspan)

    • Woglom lived at the same time in the same area
    • Eddy living in Bayonne, N.J., working in New-York
    • Woglom living and working in Manhattan
    • Woglom worked as a jeweller
    • kite flying as a hobby
    • both flew their kites at same occasion ("Sound Money Parade" Oct. 31, 1896)
    • Woglom gives a detailed description in his book "Parakites" of 1896
  • Eddy and Woglom or Why the Eddy Kite is a Parakite
    • The definition of a "Parakite" as given in Woglom's book:
    • a: tailless
    • b: 2 sticks of equal length
    • c: sticks crossing at 17 % of length
    • d: cross stick bowed to 10 % of wingspan
    • e: cover 10% wider than frame and folded in “box plaid” along spine to "bag" for improved stability (twin concaves)

    • The Eddy Kite of 1895:
    • Picture of Margaret Eddy with her father's kites and of a boy holding a kite frame Both pictures obviously taken the same date.
    • Kite on right side shows frame with sticks crossing at about 18 – 19%
    • Cross stick is not only bowed but also swept back so that “wingtips” are set back to 68% of length

    • Kite shows many attributes of its Asian "ancestor"

    • Cross stick bowed

    • December 1895 : 2 letters from W. Eddy to James Means (publisher of "Aeronautical Annuals").
    • " The paper should be gathered on a box pleat from A to E. This causes concavity along the c entral upright . "
    • “ Looking down on top of the kite the box pleat looks thus: A1 is upright stick The box pleat is here open, to show how the paper is tucked when pressed flat and the kite is covered, looking down on top of the kite it looks thus: Following is boxpleat, looking at front face of kite. Dotted line shows where paper is tucked under. "

    • The Eddy patent :
    • United States Patent Office WILLIAM A. EDDY, OF BAYONNE, NEW JERSEY. KITE. SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 646,375, dated March 27,1900. Application filed August 1,1898, Serial No. 687,394.
    • … This cover is made, preferably, of suitable flexible material, such as cloth, and while in shape conforming substantially to the lines connecting the ends of the frame-pieces is wider along the line of the cross-bar than the length of the cross – bar. … The greater width of the cover is taken up by gathers or folds along the portions of the wires or guys which run to the top of the kite, as indicated by the shade-lines … I claim— … 10. In a kite of the character described, the combination of crossed extender members, guys passing there-around to produce a symmetrical frame, a covering secured upon the frame, and means upon the covering whereby under the action of the wind said covering is adapted to have formed in it two concavities extending longitudinally of the upright extender member, substantially as specified.

The Woglom patent : Having described my invention, what I consider as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is — 1. In an object of the character described, the combination of extender members and guys cooperating to form a symmetrical frame and a covering secured to said guys, said covering being provided with a longitudinally-extending double fold or box-plait at its middle portion, so that when the covering is under the action of the wind it will have formed in it two concavities extending longitudinally of the upright extender member, substantially as described.

  • Eddy and Woglom or Why the Eddy Kite is a Parakite "You only see what you know" On closer examination of the picture of W. A. Eddy and his Eddykite the two "box plaids" can be recognized. This shows that this kite has the characteristic attributes of a Parakite !
  • Eddy and Woglom or Why the Eddy Kite is a Parakite In the end, neither Eddy nor Woglom seemed to care any more about the similarities of their kites from 1900 on. A newspaper report about a gathering of the Woglum (Woglom) family in 1900 even gives a hint, that they hat a closer relationship at this time: ONE WAS A KITE FLYER. Gilbert Totten Woglom was the first scientific kite flyer in New York. He is now associated with Mr. Eddy, of New Jersey, in experimenting with kites. He was at yesterday's reception.
